Will PeeWee and Plush overcome their differences in time to prepare for the bitter cold? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haunters of used book stores may have spotted the mystery and adventure books of Percy Keese Fitzhugh (1876-1950). They were phenomenally popular in the 1920s, and millions of copies were sold. Fitzhugh was an American author. His first known work, The Goldenrod Story Book, was published in 1906. The bulk of his work, having a Boy Scouting theme, revolves around the fictional town of Bridgeboro, New Jersey. Characters included Tom Slade, Pee-wee Harris, Roy Blakely, and Westy Martin. Fitzhugh's Scouting based books were very popular with children and adults. His characters became so real to his readers that it was not uncommon for Percy to receive fan mail addressed to the characters themselves. In the 1930s, attempting to branch out, he began writing the Hal Keen Mystery Series (10 titles) under the pseudonym Hugh Lloyd. They were followed by another mystery series, Skippy Dare, though this one only lasted for 3 books. Neither of these series achieved the popularity of his Scout work. This volume contains the first 7 Pee-Wee Harris books: Pee-wee Harris (1922) Pee-wee Harris on the Trail (1922) Pee-wee Harris in Camp (1922) Pee-wee Harris in Luck (1922) Pee-wee Harris Adrift (1922) Pee-wee Harris, F.O.B. Bridgeboro (1923) Pee-wee Harris, Fixer (1924) If you enjoy this volume of the MEGAPACK® series, check out the more than 400 other volumes, covering children's literature, science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, romance—and much, much more! Book excerpt: A film archetype as old as film itself, the man-child has been an enduring comedy subject. Classics as diverse as Hail the Conquering Hero (1944) and The Apartment (1960) have used the immature male to drive plots and press the importance of growing up. But he was not born fully formed--it took the shifting social norms of decades to mold the atrocious behavior of the puerile buffoon we know today. The man-child has come under scrutiny in recent years. Prominent writers, including David Denby and A.O. Scott, have criticized the modern comedian behaving in shamelessly childish ways. This book provides a comprehensive examination of the character of the man-child, from Andre Deed, who debuted on screen in 1901, to Seth Rogen. The author discusses changing cultural attitudes about maturity, what it means to be an adult, what it means to be a child and how those things are becoming increasingly confused.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Pee-wee and his playhouse help us reimagine our relationships to technology I Know You Are, but What Am I? explores the cultural legacy of Pee-wee Herman, the cult television star of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. This children’s show—that was also for adults—ran on network TV from 1986 to 1990 and starred comedian Paul Reubens as Herman, a queer man-boy whose playhouse, the set for the show, was tricked out with a profusion of animate computational toys and technologies. Cait McKinney shows how three defining scenes from the show inform, and even foretell and challenge, our present moment: the playhouse as an alternative precursor to networked smart homes that foregrounds caring and ethical relationships between humans and technologies; a reparative retelling of Reubens’s career-wrecking 1991 arrest for indecent exposure inside a Florida adult film theater as part of an AIDS-phobic, antigay sting operation; and worn-out, Talking Pee-wee dolls and their broken afterlives on eBay and YouTube. McKinney looks at how queer people who were children in the 1980s remember and relate to Pee-wee now, showing that the moral panic about sexuality, gender, and children from the past can help us refute anti-trans and anti-queer political movements organized today.

Book excerpt: This guidebook provides teachers and librarians with methods for collaboratively teaching elementary students to select books they will enjoy and which will further their personal growth and information literacy. Motivating young students to read is instrumental for the development of strong information literacy and communication skills, as well as for building a lifelong habit of seeking information and enjoyment through written materials. The authors of Personalized Reading: It's a Piece of PIE are three highly experienced teachers, one of whom is a school librarian. This text describes the steps of the PIE program in detail, including chapters on selecting a book, reading it, writing about it, and extending beyond that title. Utilizing the PIE program will teach students to make selections at an appropriate reading level, expand from choosing titles in the same genre or from the same author, and recognize and abandon a book of low interest to them. Within each chapter are explanations of the theories behind each step and practical ideas that teachers and librarians can implement collaboratively in the classroom and library.

Book excerpt: Phil, ailing and unemployed, took an orphaned fawn into his trailer and now walks the woods with the devoted stag. "I don't know what I'd do without Li'l Buck," Phil declares simply. "I guess I'd be crazy." Walt, a retired pipe fitter, says, "Animals...take your heartache away. I lost my boy to drugs and my horse saved my life--just through the therapy of riding." Don and Lillian devote their time advocating for animal rights and bringing home lost animals. According to Don, "Emotionally, it's an endorphin rush to be with [the animals]. On the metaphysical level, they give us meaning in life." With these and many other compelling, heartfelt stories, Saved, in the words of Rita Mae Brown, "proves once again that love rescues us all."
