Book Synopsis Ideal of the Courtly Gentleman in Spanish Literature by : Francesco Raimondo Ph. D.
Download or read book Ideal of the Courtly Gentleman in Spanish Literature written by Francesco Raimondo Ph. D. and published by . This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study on the subject of the Spanish courtly gentleman of the sixteenth century, the author traces the courtly gentleman's life ideals as they appear first in Montalvo's Amadis de Gaula and later in Il Cortegiano of Castiglione. The study also appraises what new perspectives and attitudes are at the center of Castiglione's view of cortegiania and how these elements are reflected in other Spanish courtesy books subsequent to The Courtier's arrival and publication in Spain. In the last part of the book, the author deals with the theme of courtliness in Don Quixote and with Cervantes's attitude toward the courtier's pursuits, aspirations, and lifestyle. He also analyzes, through the study of selected works of Calderón and Gracián, certain problems of self-perception, moral conscience, and outlook that distinguish the ideal man of the baroque age, as envisioned by these authors, from his renaissance counterpart. On the whole, the study points to the gradual change and process of secularization of the courtier's ideal during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and to the decline of traditional thought and myths about class limitations and human potential.

Book Synopsis Calderón in the German Lands and the Low Countries by : Henry W. Sullivan
Download or read book Calderón in the German Lands and the Low Countries written by Henry W. Sullivan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the afterlife of the great Golden Age dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca in Dutch and German-speaking Europe. The high quality of the German critical and philosophical tradition has led to a far greater appreciation of Calderón outside than inside his native Spain, and it is in the German territories that the playwright's influence has been most remarkable and widespread. Professor Sullivan documents and analyses Calderón's reception and influence on the stage and on playwriting, criticism, philosophy and music in these territories. In addressing his book to students of both the German and the Spanish traditions Professor Sullivan has supplied the necessary background to both cultures and has rendered all quotations into English. The range of material will also make the book important for students of philosophy, comparative drama and German opera.

Book Synopsis The Dynamics of the Imagery in the Theater of Federico García Lorca by : James T. Kiosses
Download or read book The Dynamics of the Imagery in the Theater of Federico García Lorca written by James T. Kiosses and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating study, James Kiosses explores the development of imagery in the plays of Federico García Lorca. Kiosses argues that Lorca's use of poetic imagery becomes more dynamic over time, shaping dialogue and providing dramatic momentum. By employing elements of traditional Spanish romance and techniques used by Góngora, Lope de Vega and Calderón, Lorca's images not only convey meaning, reveal thoughts and heighten emotional content, but also constitute a sub-text that reflects the sequential movement of action and drama. Kiosses contends that the poetic imagery in Lorca's plays eludes many readers because it is often viewed as a means to enrich dialogue rather than as an integral part of it. Although there are numerous critiques of Lorca's theatrical imagery, none has provided an analysis as comprehensive and as interesting as the one Kiosses presents in this work.
