Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optimal management of children who receive dialysis therapy requires a thorough understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of their treatment. The multiple organ systems that are often impacted by acute and chronic impairment of kidney function makes the care of this patient population highly complex. This 3rd edition of Pediatric Dialysis provides authoritative and comprehensive information on all aspects of dialysis-related care for children to assist the clinician in achieving the best possible patient outcomes. Like the two preceding editions, the 3rd edition enlists experts from North America, South America, Europe, and Asia to provide their perspectives on virtually all issues pertaining to dialysis-related management for children, based on years of clinical and research experience. The book contains sections on all essential topics including when to initiate dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, managing secondary complications, nutritional therapy, drugs and dialysis, dialysis outcomes, and transition to adult care. Each chapter has been thoroughly updated in terms of content and references. The book also includes several new chapters on topics such as remote patient monitoring, acute kidney injury management in the developing world, and antibiotic stewardship in the dialysis unit, maintaining the text's preeminent status as a worldwide source for pediatric dialysis care.

Book excerpt: Child/adolescent development and behavior have been a traditional "concern" of prima ry health care providers. However, it was not until the mid-1960s that attempts were made to consolidate developmental-behavioral issues into an identifiably distinct fund of medi cal knowledge. During the ensuing two decades, developmental-behavioral pediatrics was recognized as a clinical and research subspecialty, within the framework of compre hensive health care for children. The influence of public advocacy groups, topic-dedicated journals, national professional specialty societies, subject-related continuing education programs, and federal legislation (PL94-142) has served to crystallize developmen tal-behavioral pediatrics as a specialized field of study. As a consequence, during the past ten years significant modifications have restructured medical student and pediatric resi dent education, providing an emphasis on developmental-behavioral issues. The focus on neurodevelopmental, educational, and psychosocial issues reflects changing priorities in traditional health care for children. The postgraduate training of pediatric fellows, in two and three-year training programs, was initiated to accommodate professional manpower needs in both academic and practice settings. Many of the problems in childhood development and behavior frequently span the traditional areas of child neurology, child psychiatry, and general pediatrics. As a result there has been some confusion in demarcating professional responsibilities in diagnosis and management, as well as poorly defined terminology and classification schemas. With the birth of developmental pediatrics as a pediatric specialty, a more cohesive fund of knowledge has been accumulated and more meaningful strategies have been designed for prevention, diagnosis, and management.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive Manuals in Pediatrics are designed to broaden the prac titioner's clinical scope by providing a wide range of diagnostic and management skills ordinarily considered to be the exclusive domain of the specialists. Although the series as a whole constitutes a comprehensive text in pediatrics, each volume stands on its own as a self-contained reference for the busy practitioner. In order to maintain a uniform style and coverage of each subject, each manual is usually written by no more than one or two authors. Each author is an acknowledged expert in his or her field and provides a comprehensive, up-to-date account of the topic under discussion. Prac tically oriented, each volume offers concise guidelines and courses of treatment. Michael Katz E. Richard Stiehm Preface The preface-my opportunity to rationalize this labor, titillate the reader, philosophize or otherwise self-indulge. I'll take full advantage. Why write a book? After fifteen years' experience as an infectious disease consultant, teacher and researcher, I feel it is time to speak out! I have spent the majority of my waking hours thinking, reading and writing about childrens' infectious disease problems, have amassed a veritable Fort Knox of publications on the subject and have been reasonably out spoken. Yet the field continues to progress with reckless speed and the gaps between our knowledge and effective communication of new infor mation remain wide. I am eager to accept more responsibility for teaching yet my audience has been limited.

Book excerpt: In recent years, considerable professional attention has centered on the behavioral aspects of various childhood illnesses and injuries. Indeed, child health psychology has grown exponentially over the past decade. One index of this growth is found in the number of texts that have recently appeared in the area (Gross & Drabman, 1990; Karoly, 1988; Krasnegor, Arasteh, & Cataldo, 1986; Levine, Carey, Crocker, & Gross, 1982; Routh, 1988; Russo & Varni, 1982; Tuma, 1982; Varni, 1983). In general, these texts provide summaries of the psychological literature across a variety of established (e.g., oncology) and emerging (psychoneuroimmunology) areas of child health. Until recently, many books on the psychological aspects of pediatric health provided no or minimal information about the psychosocial plight of child burn victims. In some instances, pediatric burns might be men tioned parenthetically as another example of a population for which behavioral treatment procedures (e. g., pain management) may be of value. In part, the relative inattention devoted to this population may be related to the perception that the literature in this area is sketchy and charac terized by significant methodological and substantive shortcomings. In many instances, this perception is largely justified. However, it is also the case that the pediatric burn literature has evolved considerably over the past decade and that the incidence of, and morbidity associated, with severe burn injuries mandates immediate and increased attention by mental health professionals.
