Book excerpt: Pediatric trauma-a severe and potentially disabling or life threatening injury to a child resulting from an event such as a motor vehicle crash or a fall-is the leading cause of disability for children in the United States. More children die of injury each year than from all other causes combined. GAO was asked to examine issues related to pediatric trauma care. This report examines (1) what is known about the availability of trauma centers for children and the outcomes for children treated at different types of facilities, and (2) how, if at all, federal agencies are involved in supporting pediatric trauma care and how these activities are coordinated. GAO analyzed data on the number of pediatric and adult trauma centers in the United States relative to the pediatric population under 18 years of age. GAO used 2015 data on trauma centers from the American Trauma Society's Trauma Information Exchange Program and 5-year population estimates for 2011-2015 from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, which were the latest available data at the time of GAO's analysis. GAO also reviewed the existing peer-reviewed, academic literature on outcomes for pediatric trauma patients, interviewed stakeholder group representatives and federal agency officials involved in activities related to hospital-based pediatric trauma care, and reviewed available agency documentation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pediatric trauma continues to have a significant impact on the health and well-being of children in the United States. Trauma continues to be the leading cause of death in children 1 to 18 years of age and accounted for more than 14,000 deaths among all children 0 to 18 years of age. In 2008, there were more than 8.6 million nonfatal injuries among newborn to 18-year-olds, with an injury rate of greater than 1 in 10. There is little debate that a coordinated effort and pediatric- specific advances in pediatric trauma systems, prehospital care and hospital care, and injury prevention can have a positive impact on pediatric trauma outcomes in the United States. However, there are still gaps in access to centers that deliver pediatric-focused trauma care, especially in rural areas. Furthermore, there are differing views between different centers regarding the optimal approach to the initial evaluation and management of the pediatric trauma patient. This book is targeted to review critical aspects of the care of the pediatric trauma patient, highlighting the most common and critical injuries encountered in the acute care setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children represent a special challenge for emergency care providers, because they have unique medical needs in comparison to adults. For decades, policy makers and providers have recognized the special needs of children, but the system has been slow to develop an adequate response to their needs. This is in part due to inadequacies within the broader emergency care system. Emergency Care for Children examines the challenges associated with the provision of emergency services to children and families and evaluates progress since the publication of the Institute of Medicine report Emergency Medical Services for Children (1993), the first comprehensive look at pediatric emergency care in the United States. This new book offers an analysis of: • The role of pediatric emergency services as an integrated component of the overall health system. • System-wide pediatric emergency care planning, preparedness, coordination, and funding. • Pediatric training in professional education. • Research in pediatric emergency care. Emergency Care for Children is one of three books in the Future of Emergency Care series. This book will be of particular interest to emergency health care providers, professional organizations, and policy makers looking to address the pediatric deficiencies within their emergency care systems.
