Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peasant Life in the Holy Land To the new comer from the West, who obtains his first glimpse of Eastern life as he sets foot on the shores of Palestine, all he sees and hears comes with startling novelty. Every turn of the road or street, each group by the wayside, the long lines of camels winding down the valleys, the picturesque crowds of an Eastern market, the varied incidents of peasant life, all present brilliant pictures to eye and mind with a Vividness and freshness which are apt to be much dimmed by long residence among these scenes and intimate familiarity with them. Book excerpt: Written by Elihu Grant, a Methodist minister, this book focuses on discussing the life of people who lived in Palestine. It specifically highlights the more rural areas of the region. Grant describes Palestine as the following: "We thought that Palestine had passed into ancient history, but it has been a center of modern events. No country in the world has a more continuously interesting and profitable story. Its present population is made of sturdy and able people. Three great religions call it Holy Land. It presents to view of three distinct types of human society, the desert nomad who dwells in the tented encampment, the peasant villager who reminds us in so many ways of the people of the Bible, and the more foreign-looking and mingled folk of the large cities."

Book Synopsis The Palestinian Peasant Economy Under the Mandate by : Amos Nadan
Download or read book The Palestinian Peasant Economy Under the Mandate written by Amos Nadan and published by Harvard CMES. This book was released on 2006 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the claim that Palestine's peasant economy progressed during the 1920s and 1930s, Amos Nadan skillfully integrates a wide variety of sources to demonstrate that the period was actually one of deterioration on both the macro (per capita) and micro levels. The economy would have most likely continued its downward spiral during the 1940s had it not been for the temporary prosperity that resulted from World War II. Nadan argues that this deterioration continued despite the British authorities' channeling of funds from the Jewish sector and the wealthier Arab sectors into projects for the Arab rural economy. The British were hoping that Palestine's peasants would not rebel if their economic conditions improved. These programs were, on the whole, defective because the British chose programs based on an assumption that the peasants were too ignorant to manage their farms wisely, instead of working with the peasants and their own institutions.
