Book Synopsis Folktales of Newfoundland (RLE Folklore) by : Herbert Halpert
Download or read book Folktales of Newfoundland (RLE Folklore) written by Herbert Halpert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 1175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Newfoundland folk narratives, first published in 1996, grew out of extensive fieldwork in folk culture in the province. The intention was to collect as broad a spectrum of traditional material as possible, and Folktales of Newfoundland is notable not only for the number and quality of its narratives, but also for the format in which they are presented. A special transcription system conveys to the reader the accents and rhythms of each performance, and the endnote to each tale features an analysis of the narrator’s language. In addition, Newfoundland has preserved many aspects of English and Irish folk tradition, some of which are no longer active in the countries of their origin. Working from the premise that traditions virtually unknown in England might still survive in active form in Newfoundland, the researchers set out to discover if this was in fact the case.
Book Synopsis History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe by : Marcel Cornis-Pope
Download or read book History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe written by Marcel Cornis-Pope and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-09-13 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the work undertaken in Vol. 1 of the History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe, Vol. 2 considers various topographic sites—multicultural cities, border areas, cross-cultural corridors, multiethnic regions—that cut across national boundaries, rendering them permeable to the flow of hybrid cultural messages. By focusing on the literary cultures of specific geographical locations, this volume intends to put into practice a new type of comparative study. Traditional comparative literary studies establish transnational comparisons and contrasts, but thereby reconfirm, however inadvertently, the very national borders they play down. This volume inverts the expansive momentum of comparative studies towards ever-broader regional, European, and world literary histories. While the theater of this volume is still the literary culture of East-Central Europe, the contributors focus on pinpointed local traditions and geographic nodal points. Their histories of Riga, Plovdiv, Timişoara or Budapest, of Transylvania or the Danube corridor – to take a few examples – reveal how each of these sites was during the last two-hundred years a home for a variety of foreign or ethnic literary traditions next to the one now dominant within the national borders. By foregrounding such non-national or hybrid traditions, this volume pleads for a diversification and pluralization of local and national histories. A genuine comparatist revival of literary history should involve the recognition that “treading on native grounds” means actually treading on grounds cultivated by diverse people.

Download or read book Living and Working in Sofia written by Waltraud Kokot and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western popular images of Bulgaria are still fused with stereotypes about "the Balkans" as a peripheral "Other." In these constructions, cities and contemporary urban life hardly figure at all. This book presents a variety of urban livelihood strategies, social relations, and personal agencies in the context of social and cultural change. A central task of social anthropology is to bring the unfamiliar into focus, and this urban ethnographic study contributes to a better understanding of Sofia as a major city in contemporary Europe. Book Synopsis Winston Churchill, Myth and Reality by : Richard M. Langworth
Download or read book Winston Churchill, Myth and Reality written by Richard M. Langworth and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winston Churchill, indispensable when liberty was in peril, died in 1965. Yet he is still accused of numerous sins, from alcoholism and racism to misogyny and warmongering. On the Internet, he simmers in a stew of imagined misdeeds--using poison gas, firebombing Dresden, causing the Bengal famine, and so on. Drawing on the author's fifty years of research and writing on Churchill, this book uncovers scores of myths surrounding him--the popular and the obscure--to reveal what he really said and did about many issues. Churchill had two personas--one that thought deeply about the nature of humanity, and one that helped solve seemingly intractable problems. In his many decades in public life, he made mistakes, but his faults were well eclipsed by his virtues.
