Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The question of fossil fuel depletion represents a significant contemporary agricultural problem. Once humans deplete the resources on which agriculture and food production depends, we will be daunted by the complexities of remaking the agricultural system, and faced with the consequences of our failures in the past. Arguably, no other single factor can affect future food production prospects as much as energy supply. In this context, there are growing debates about the extent to which diverse farming systems {u2013} including conventional and organic farming systems {u2013} may represent more energy efficient and productive systems. This thesis makes a contribution to this debate, by undertaking a case study of energy use on conventional and organic dairy farms in South-East Queensland. To do this, this thesis undertakes an energy audit of four farms; and in so doing, articulates the energy requirements related to milk production, and a starting point for addressing energy efficiencies and controlling energy use on the farm. This thesis then compares data across the four case studies to identify the effect of different management practices upon energy use and sustainability of individual enterprises. The results presented in this thesis demonstrate that along with concerns regarding diminishing fossil fuel reserves, and the need to re-design energy inefficient agriculture and food systems, rising energy costs have also resulted in a re-evaluation of energy use, leading many farmers to seek alternative {u2013} low energy {u2013} agricultural practices. Reducing on-farm energy consumption is recognised by many farmers as a vital step in ensuring the long-term viability of their farms. One of the outcomes of these circumstances has been an increased farmer interest in monitoring energy use patterns and quantifying energy use. Knowledge of the patterns of energy flows on the farm will act as important tools for farmers to assess the overall sustainability of their farming activities and lead to improved management practices, conservation of fossil fuels and an increase in profitability.
Book Synopsis Eating Fossil Fuels by : Dale Allen Pfeiffer
Download or read book Eating Fossil Fuels written by Dale Allen Pfeiffer and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A shocking outline of the interlinked crises in energy and agriculture — and appropriate responses The miracle of the Green Revolution was made possible by cheap fossil fuels to supply crops with artificial fertilizer, pesticides, and irrigation. Estimates of the net energy balance of agriculture in the US show that ten calories of hydrocarbon energy are required to produce one calorie of food. Such an imbalance cannot continue in a world of diminishing hydrocarbon resources. Eating Fossil Fuels examines the interlinked crises of energy and agriculture and highlights some startling findings: The world-wide expansion of agriculture has appropriated fully 40% of the photosynthetic capability of this planet. The Green Revolution provided abundant food sources for many, resulting in a population explosion well in excess of the planet's carrying capacity. Studies suggest that without fossil fuel based agriculture, the US could only sustain about two thirds of its present population. For the planet as a whole, the sustainable number is estimated to be about two billion. Concluding that the effect of energy depletion will be disastrous without a transition to a sustainable, relocalized agriculture, the book draws on the experiences of North Korea and Cuba to demonstrate stories of failure and success in the transition to non-hydrocarbon-based agriculture. It urges strong grassroots activism for sustainable, localized agriculture and a natural shrinking of the world's population. Dale Allen Pfeiffer is a novelist, freelance journalist and geologist who has been writing about energy depletion for a decade. The author of The End of the Oil Age, he is also widely known for his web project: www.survivingpeakoil.com.
Book Synopsis Preparing for Peak Oil in South Africa by : Jeremy J. Wakeford
Download or read book Preparing for Peak Oil in South Africa written by Jeremy J. Wakeford and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil is the lifeblood of modern industrial economies. Petroleum powers virtually all motorized transport, which in turn enables most economic activities and provides mobility for citizens. But oil is a finite resource that is steadily depleting. In the past decade, the phenomenon of global peak oil – the fact that annual world oil production must at some point reach a maximum and then decline – has emerged as one of the twenty-first century’s greatest challenges. South Africa imports over two-thirds of its petroleum fuels, and history has shown that oil price shocks generally translate into a weakening currency, rising consumer prices, increasing joblessness and a slow-down in economic activity. This book examines the implications of peak oil for socioeconomic welfare in South Africa and proposes a wide range of strategies and policies for mitigating and adapting to the likely impacts. It contains a wealth of data in tables and figures that illustrate South Africa’s oil dependencies and vulnerabilities to oil shocks. The material is presented from a systems perspective and is organized in key thematic areas including energy, transport, agriculture, macro-economy and society. The study highlights the risks, uncertainties and difficult choices South Africa faces if it is to tackle its oil addiction, and thereby serves as an example for researchers, planners and policy-makers in the developing world who will sooner or later confront similar challenges. This case study brings a fresh southern perspective to an issue of global importance, and shows how the era of flattening and then declining global oil supplies may be a pivotal period in which either the project of industrialization progressively runs out of steam, or societies are able to undertake a proactive transition to a more sustainable future.
Book Synopsis Trends in Oil Supply and Demand, the Potential for Peaking of Conventional Oil Production, and Possible Mitigation Options by : National Research Council
Download or read book Trends in Oil Supply and Demand, the Potential for Peaking of Conventional Oil Production, and Possible Mitigation Options written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-03-17 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent events and analyses have suggested that global production of oil might peak sometime within the next few years to the next one or two decades. Other analyses, however, conclude that oil supply can meet global demand for some decades to come and that oil production peaking is much further off. To explore this issue, the NRC held a workshop, funded by the Department of Energy, bringing together analysts representing these different views. The workshop was divided into four main sessions: setting the stage; future global oil supply and demand balance; mitigation options and time to implementation; and potential follow-up activities. This report provides a summary of the workshop including the key points, issues and questions raised by the participants, and it identifies possible topics for follow-up studies. No consensus views, conclusions, or recommendations are presented.

Book Synopsis Peak Oil, Economic Growth, and Wildlife Conservation by : J. Edward Gates
Download or read book Peak Oil, Economic Growth, and Wildlife Conservation written by J. Edward Gates and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed book focuses on one of the most important issues affecting humankind in this century - Peak Oil or the declining availability of abundant, cheap energy—and its effects on our industrialized economy and wildlife conservation. Energy will be one of the defining issues of the 21st Century directly affecting wildlife conservation wherever energy extraction is a primary economic activity and indirectly through deepening economic recessions. Since cheap, abundant energy has been at the core of our industrial society, and has resulted in the technological advancements we enjoy today, the peak in world oil extraction would potentially have major impacts on civilization unless we prepare well in advance. One potential economic solution covered in the book would be a Steady State Economy with a stable population and per capita consumption, particularly in such industrialized countries as the United States. Furthermore, the lack of cheap, abundant energy directly and indirectly affects conservation efforts by professional societies and federal and state agencies, and NGOs concerned with wildlife issues. We need to recognize these potential problems and prepare, as much as possible, for the consequences stemming from them.
Download or read book Peak Oil written by iMinds and published by iMinds Pty Ltd. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil is put to use every day in vehicles, plains, agriculture and many other ways. Developed nations have been built on oil and are still very much reliant on this finite commodity. The vast changes to life brought about by the Industrial Revolution depended on oil as a power source. It is not unexpected then that many people find it difficult to admit the world is changing. Cheap energy may not be available indefinitely and this will prove damaging to world economies. There a two major concerns with oil consumption. First, there is its impact in the form of global warming and the need to find environmentally sustainable alternative energies. Secondly, there is the concern of cheap oil reaching a peak and eventually running out completely.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture by : B.A. Stout
Download or read book Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture written by B.A. Stout and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adequate food supplies and a reasonable quality of life require energy~both noncommercial and commercial forms. This book is intended to be a reference for individuals who want a comprehensive overview of energy for agriculture, many of whom are located in remote areas with limited library resources. The purpose is to put energy for agriculture in perspective by presenting numerous national and regional examples of energy usage. Since the early 1970s, world petroleum prices have fluctuated from $3/barrel to more than $40/barrel in 1981 and then back to less than a half of the peak price today. Commercial energy is expensive at any price for rural villagers in developing countries, and energy prices in these countries do not necessarily correspond with world prices. For example, diesel fuel prices in some developing countries have increased, while world oil prices have decreased. The rural sector of developing countries depends heavily on noncommercial energy sources. Availability of noncommercial energy is highly site-specific. This book deals extensively with noncommercial energy~its sources, the technologies for converting energy to more useful gaseous and liquid forms, and its ultimate end uses. Chapter I is an introduction and overview. It emphasizes the essential nature of energy to supplement the limited work output of human beings. Chapter II describes energy use in world agriculture with particular emphasis on fertilizer, machinery, and irrigation. It tabulates cereal grain yields as related to commercial energy input for various regions. Chapter III presents numerous national and regional illustrations of energy use.
Download or read book Plan C written by Pat Murphy and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sustainability expert goes beyond renewables, calling on us to combat the climate crisis with a new, low-energy way of life. Concerns over climate change and energy depletion are increasing exponentially. Mainstream solutions still assume that some miracle will cure our climate ills without requiring us to change our energy-intensive lifestyle. But switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources isn’t enough. We need a Plan C. In response to the converging crises of Peak Oil, climate change, and increasing inequity, sustainability expert Pat Murphy offers an inspiring vision of community and curtailment. Where cooperation replaces competition, we can deliberately reduce consumption of consumer goods. Plan C shows how each person's individual choices can dramatically reduce CO2 emissions, offering specific strategies in the areas of food, transportation, and housing.
Book Synopsis Confronting Collapse by : Michael C. Ruppert
Download or read book Confronting Collapse written by Michael C. Ruppert and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book that inspired the movie Collapse. The world is running short of energy-especially cheap, easy-to-find oil. Shortages, along with resulting price increases, threaten industrialized civilization, the global economy, and our entire way of life. In Confronting Collapse, author Michael C. Ruppert, a former LAPD narcotics officer turned investigative journalist, details the intricate connections between money and energy, including the ways in which oil shortages and price spikes triggered the economic crash that began in September 2008. Given the 96 percent correlation between economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions and the unlikelihood of economic growth without a spike in energy use, Ruppert argues that we are not, in fact, on the verge of economic recovery, but on the verge of complete collapse. Ruppert's truth is not merely inconvenient. It is utterly devastating. But there is still hope. Ruppert outlines a 25-point plan of action, including the creation of a second strategic petroleum reserve for the use of state and local governments, the immediate implementation of a national Feed-in Tariff mandating that electric utilities pay 3 percent above market rates for all surplus electricity generated from renewable sources, a thorough assessment of soil conditions nationwide, and an emergency action plan for soil restoration and sustainable agriculture.
