Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DescriptionThis is the story of Peter McFarlane's journey back from the brink of madness, following years of sexual abuse. His childhood was blighted with this secret and cynical disease, and his life became filled with hidden remnants of fear, affecting all relationships and colouring all experiences. Unconscious memories of abuse were awakened, due to the trauma of a car crash, and he met Dr Christian Langford who became his psychiatrist. Hearing from Peter about some of the recalled incidents, psychogenic amnesia was diagnosed, where the pain of remembering is so great that, for survival, a person finds it necessary to forget. Young Peter had grown up with only a few friends on the remote and sparsely populated Scottish island he loves, discovering his homosexuality when he was still very young. In the course of his therapy, Langford discovered that Peter was also suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder, induced by post traumatic stress. The full extent of his mental health problem was revealed, and Peter's doctor was challenged to find a working cure that would give him back sufficient elements of his fractured life with which he could begin to piece together the stolen years of his life. About the AuthorRon McLachlan was born in 1951, and now lives and writes in Wemyss Bay, a small coastal town in the west of Scotland. Ron has published a trilogy of novels, and has won, or been shortlisted, in a number of international, national, and local short story competitions. He has written another novel entitled The Saviour, and, in 2005, began a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing, in New Jersey. As a child, he suffered years of abuse that led ultimately to years of therapy. "All my life," he says, "I have just been trying to survive."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clear Words to Understand the World (喻世明言, Yushi Mingyan), is a collection of short stories written by Feng Menglong during the Ming dynasty. It was published in Suzhou in 1620. It is considered to be pivotal in the development of Chinese vernacular fiction. Feng Menglong collected and slightly modified works from the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, such as changing characters’ names and locations to make stories more contemporary. The writing style of the series of stories is written vernacular, or baihua, the everyday language of people at that time. The 40 stories are divided into 3 sections, one section collects Song and Yuan dynasty tales, one collects Ming dynasty stories, and the last is the stories created by Feng Menglong himself. The success of Yushi Mingyan (Clear Words to Understand the World) led Feng to edit and publish Jingshi Tongyan(Warnings of the World) in 1624, and Xingshi Hengyan (Constant Words to Awaken the World) in 1627. Each collection contained forty stories. The title of each collection ended with the word "yan" (word), so they are often referred to as a group: Sanyan. The stories in these three books are in a format called Huaben (话本), a novella or short novel.

Book excerpt: The Red Coat Trail of southern Saskatchewan and southeastern Alberta runs near the route of the North West Mounted Police’s famous 1874 March West. Today, this lonely highway passes through a windswept land of ghostly abandoned towns. Johnnie Bachusky takes readers back to the heyday of these towns, which sprang up as settlers travelled west during the last great land rush. The Roaring Twenties brought bumper harvests, but also bootleggers and bank robbers; fortunes were won and lost in high-stakes poker games. The Great Depression devastated the region as disease, drought, dust storms and grasshoppers took their toll. History comes to life in these exciting true stories, from an account of a 1920s bank robbery in Manyberries to the tales of a boisterous Govenlock rancher who hunted with Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With I'm Not from Here, popular writer Will Willimon returns to fiction with a story of spiritual discovery set in a Southern town. Will takes us on a Don Quixote-like journey during which young Felix Goforth Luckie learns a great deal about the world, about other people, and about a God who shows up in the oddest places, in the strangest times, and among the unlikeliest people. On a quest to discover himself, Felix is discovered by the grace of God. In homage to Dostoevsky, Cervantes, and the Bible, Willimon creates a world that is thoroughly believable, realistic, and ordinary, yet at the same time fantastic, strange, and funny. In Galilee, Georgia, young Felix finds that things are not as they first appear, people are wonderfully mysterious, and God is unavoidable. At times odd, frequently very funny, both satirical and poignant, I'm Not from Here is a rollicking tale, a light-hearted parable with serious intent. Willimon's first novel, Incorporation, was widely acclaimed for its satire, honesty, and theological depth. While this his second novel differs considerably, I'm Not from Here is equally surprising and entertaining, showing Willimon's gifts as a masterful storyteller. Even as the parables of Jesus reveal things to us that could not be seen except through fiction, so this novel is not only engaging but also revealing.
