Book Synopsis African Odyssey by : Floyd R Sandford
Download or read book African Odyssey written by Floyd R Sandford and published by . This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a little-traveled idealistic New Yorker adjust to the life of a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, teaching biology in a culture infused with superstition? In this memoir, a former Peace Corps volunteer recounts the challenges and frustrations of teaching secondary school science in Nigeria from 1964-66, just prior to the tragic Biafran War. Author Sandford describes memorable, often humorous, experiences living and working in Nigeria and traveling throughout the country, including unusual dining experiences, an embarrassing church visit, his first haircut by an African barber, and an encounter with a traditional Yoruba healer or juju man. He also relates traveling to National Parks and interesting locales in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, in East Africa, and his adventures there, including meeting Jomo Kenyatta in Mombasa, the Hyena Man in Harar, and surviving an elephant stampede in Murchison Falls NP. African Odyssey is a readable and entertaining account of one American's immersion in a different culture, and of the rewards that come when a person confronts new challenges and uniquely different situations, assuming the risks of journeying to places much different from those to which one is accustomed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Training is an essential and ongoing part of your Peace Corps service. Pre-service training will give you enough skills and information to begin your adjustment to and service in South Africa. It is the first "reality test" of your life as a Volunteer, which will help you make an informed commitment when you swear in as a Peace Corps Volunteer. The 8- to 10-week pre-service training in South Africa is community based, meaning that the bulk of the training takes place in a community similar to where you will be placed as a Volunteer. The training staff will design a learning environment with experiences and meetings designed to allow you to develop the knowledge and skills needed for your work as a Volunteer. There will be sessions on language, community integration, cross-cultural communication, development issues, health and personal safety, and technical skills appropriate to your assignment. Throughout your training, you will live with a South African family and work in villages and schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I left for the Peace Corps in 1998, I knew I was in for "the toughest job you'll ever love." I just didn't know what that meant. One thing that I did understand was that I would need support from my family and friends in the U.S. to get through the experience. I wrote many letters home to keep them informed of my experience, and to give us something we could discuss when I returned to America. In country, I took on the duties of providing public health and community development resources. I trained a health agent to give talks on AIDS and hygiene, and I organized and found funding for the renovation of the community health center. My partner was the doctor at the health center. We worked hand-in-hand. He helped me avoid cultural traps, faux pas, and loneliness; I brought in educational resources and innovation. I lived in a hut for two years, played with children, and faced the frustration of culture differences.Every volunteer knows there are no shortages of bug and pest stories. However, few realize the amount of death they will face during their service. The Peace Corps isn't for the faint of heart. These letters detail the emotions and events as I went through them. I hope they inspire thought and caring for our fellow human beings.

Download or read book Tarnished Ivory written by Peter Bourque and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ivory Coast (1973-75) and a Peace Corps trainer in Mali (1986), Peter Bourque kept a personal journal and wrote over 55 letters back to the States. In them, he described the satisfactions and frustrations of living, working and traveling in West Africa as well as his reactions to the people he encountered—Ivorian, French, Malian and American. Decades later, he reflects and elaborates on these writings with current-day observations and candid essays about idealism, world poverty, the Peace Corps, the French, and losing his religion.
