Weary of battle, loss, and death, he has decided to return to Winn Parish to salvage what little life he has left. Sneaking away from the Confederate Army on the march from Vicksburg to a parole camp, he sets out with his closest friend, J.A., on a path of their own choosing. Together they evade Union patrols, cross the Mississippi River under fire, and dodge the Southern Home Guard as they make the long walk home. He comes home ready to lay down his weapons of war, only to find his fight for justice has just begun.Reuniting with his friend and former slave Old Bart, Lummy learns the brutal truth surrounding the death of his wife, Susannah. Filled with grief, he must regain his strength and the leader of a ragtag army of former rebel soldiers as they hunt down outlaw Home Guardsman Dawg Smith and the other members of his corrupt band, responsible for years of mayhem and death across the parish. It's not the homecoming he'd once wished for, but when Lummy stumbles across the opportunity to live up to his new oath of setting men free, he recognizes it for what it really is—a path to his own redemption.

Book excerpt: He thought his battles were over. This one is for his soul. Lummy Tullos has borne witness to the brutal toll of war. His harrowing journey has led him down paths he never intended, forced him to commit acts he never imagined. Yet, in the crucible of conflict, it's often the noblest of men who must carry out the darkest deeds. Lummy faced the impossible because survival—and sanity—demanded it. With the Civil War's echoes fading, Choctaw County, Mississippi, has known relative peace since Captain Tom Ford's notorious gang met its violent end two years ago. But the loss of kin and comrades presses heavily on Lummy's soul. Now, all he yearns for is to be a devoted husband, a loving father, and to till the good soil of the family farm in peace. Lummy’s story isn’t finished, though. His battles, he hoped, were over, but President Grant himself reaches out to deny him respite. The work of preserving freedom demands further sacrifice as a new specter looms on the horizon. A former brother-in-arms, once bound by the shared crucible of Vicksburg’s trenches, now reigns terror over central Louisiana. The call to arms reaches Lummy's ears once more, beckoning him to stand against the storm of terror so that others may know the peace he now craves. Choctaw County's fields will have to wait as Lummy journeys back to Winn Parish, where the West-Kimbrell Gang's tyranny must be quelled and the clash of wills will decide the fate of a region held captive by fear and lawlessness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Causes Life's Storm? In this sense, a storm differs from the natural-caused winter storm I experienced in 2021. The storms of life are what are being discussed here; to put it another way, our problems with life threaten to consume us. And the size and intensity of this storm varies from individual to person, family to family, and even country to nation. Everybody, everywhere, must contend with their own distinctive storm. Some people's storms include aridity, poverty, and then terrible health. While the storm for other people is a misbehaving kid or a tumultuous marriage. It may even be futility, like working hard yet producing nothing. We could go on forever and yet not be able to discuss all of the many storms that individuals encounter in life. In a previous piece, I provided further illustrations and tips for surviving life's storms. Biblical examples of life's These individuals all survived storms of various intensities throughout life. In the name of Jesus, I pray that the same God who delivered them will also deliver you. How Can I Find Peace During a Storm? Particularly for Christians, the subject of how to find calm amid the storm is important. Why? because despite having Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they are still dealing with life's storms. So, did God break His promises? Is He a liar? Let's consider what He stated in His word before we respond to this question. I have spoken these things to you so that you may find comfort in me. You will experience hardship in this world, but have hope-I have conquered the world. (John 16:33) Jesus thus made it obvious that His followers should prepare for hardship; nonetheless, we should be glad since He has triumphed over the world. how you discover peace Celebrate and find comfort in the knowledge that Jesus has conquered the world. Jesus, our Lord, did not mislead or brainwash us; instead, he stated the obvious when he said that there will be storms in this world. But he wants us to be glad and at peace because He has triumphed over the world, hallelujah. Trust God throughout the storm: Often, it's our failure to focus on God and His attributes that causes the storm to seem more severe than it really is. And the storm is all we can think about. There will be serenity if you can change your attention from the storm to the God who is in the storm.

He gave his heart, mind, and nearly his body to protect his friends and defeat the blue invader. That oath lost its meaning at the surrender of Vicksburg. After ending the murderous reign of the outlaw Rebel Home Guard responsible for his wife’s death, Lummy wants just one thing—to put the twentieth star for Mississippi back on the flag of his ancestors. Though happy to be with his family on the Tullos farm in Choctaw County, Lummy finds little peace as the War Between the States rages on. He joins with new friends loyal to the Union to help end the killing and destruction at home but realizes that it’s not enough. Lummy’s convinced his loyalty and dedication will now best serve ending the war by switching sides. Taking the new oath, he must leave to do the one thing he never wanted. He simply has no other choice—he’ll fight to do whatever it takes to end the war. He just didn’t know it would bring the war to his own hometown. And it won’t be a gray uniform he’ll be wearing. No, this time it’ll be blue.

Do you have days when it seems like the storms just won't cease? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you need a place of refuge. You need a place to hide to prevent further damage and to heal. You also need a place to seek God's guidance and direction for your life. We may not be able to prevent the storms from coming into our lives, but we can have a place of refuge to prepare us to withstand any level of damage. A Place to Hide, A Place to Seek is designed to take you on a journey to achieving the power God wants to see working in our lives. It is designed to prepare you for whatever level of force any storm may bring. The journey begins in the City of Praise. We will then travel a short distance to the City of Prayer. After we have spent some time on our knees, we will journey to the City of Promise. The next important city is the City of Peace. After we have peace, we need the City of Perseverance. We must be able to hang in there. The next city is the City of Prosperity. You have probably been waiting for this city. The last city, the one we need for God to do exceedingly, abundantly in our lives, is the City of Power. Let the journey begin!

Book excerpt: "This is the best book on attaining peace that I've ever read...it has all the makings of a classic. Here's why I like this book: It's relevant (who doesn't want greater peace?); It's human (Jim shares, doesn't preach); It's engaging (enjoyable to read, its lessons very practical); And, it's biblically rooted (I'm frankly suspect of other peace-prescriptions). It's just what you and I need as we try to navigate our pressure-packed lives " John D. Beckett, Chairman, The Beckett Companies Author: Loving Monday and Mastering Monday One of the few constants in life is change. Our lives are so unpredictable. Jobs are lost. Health falters. Loved ones pass away. Relationships get rocky. Stress comes like a tidal wave. Being a follower of Jesus doesn't necessarily make it easier. In fact, He told us we'd have trouble in this life: "In this world you will have trouble..".That means all of us. Guaranteed. While Jesus didn't leave us without hope, trouble often brings with it a lack of peace. We become prisoners to worry, anxiety and fear. Thankfully, Jesus didn't stop there. We CAN be free. After making this prediction of trouble in our lives, Jesus was also quick to remind us that He is bigger than any of our troubles: "But take heart I have overcome the world." Jesus not only came to provide a way to heaven-He came to give us life to the full. That means inner peace in recessions. Serenity in the midst of relationship struggles. Calm regardless of circumstances. This isn't just any kind of peace...it is the peace which transcends all understanding, a level of peace that we cannot imagine. And God has made this readily available. So take hold of this peace. It's meant for you. This easy-to-read book walks the reader through a process to discovering peace in the midst of the chaos which abounds in your life. Because it is rooted in Scripture, if you follow the principles outlined here you WILL find true, lasting peace regardless of the circumstances in your life.
