Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1951, this biography of George Foster Peabody (1852-1938) tells the story of an industry pioneer, railroad magnate, and philanthropist. A native of Georgia, Peabody is often listed alongside such men as John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan--men who rose from obscurity to prominence after Reconstruction. Peabody's businesses were central to the building of railroads in the United States and Mexico, and to financing mining, electrical, and sugar beet industries. Peabody also took a prominent role in civic affairs, using his position of power as an active philanthropist. Peabody's greatest concern was the advancement of education, and he eventually retired from his many business interests to devote himself to humanitarian work. Today, Peabody may be recognized most widely as the person after whom the George Foster Peabody Awards--which recognize distinguished achievement and meritorious service in the electronic media--are named.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book On the Aisle, Volume 4: Film Reviews by Philip Morency is the fourth in the series of movie reviews written by Philip Morency. This edition contains films ranging from the years 2013 through 2016, with some periodic “oldies but goodies” mixed in. Like Philip’s previous three books, On the Aisle, Volume 4 contains brief and to-the-point movie reviews that are geared toward the average moviegoer. It is not really written from a critic’s perspective, but from that of the average viewer. The reviews are simple and easy to understand. What is unique about the book is that it tells the synopsis of the film, then it gives the author’s opinion of the film, and then it lets the reader decide whether or not they would like to see the film. The films are rated on a scale of 1 through 5. There are also half-star ratings, such as 3 1⁄2 stars (VERY GOOD). The contained films are listed in alphabetical order, and for ease of reference, there is also a table of contents page. Enjoy... On the Aisle, Volume 4. About the Author Philip Morency was born on July 5, 1950 in Providence, Rhode Island. He lived in East Providence, Rhode Island until he joined the United States Air Force in 1970. He was fortunate enough to land a job with Computer Sciences Corporation located on Edwards Air Force Base. There he worked as a computer operator for the company and the base. Philip later was employed by the JT3 Corporation on Edwards Air Force Base. He is currently employed by the United States government as a civil service worker serving as a data technician. Philip currently lives in Rosamond, California. Philip’s hobbies are playing pool, dining out, going to movies, and traveling. He became interested in movies while serving in the Air Force. He started writing movie reviews in 2003 because he thought it would be fun. He got the idea from a movie video catalog. Thus far, he has written over 1500 movie reviews. Philip decided to publish books because he wanted a way to officially document his reviews. Philip also writes reviews on hotels and restaurants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major Nathaniel Peacock, USA (ret.) first saw the light of day in December of 1987 in Volume 1, Issue 1 of the Shooting Sportsman magazine. Since that date, he has lived on the back page of every issue of that magazine. Peabody is a consummate waterfowl and upland bird hunter. Excepting those times when his profligacy assumes more than usual proportions, a well-endowed Spendthrift Trust allows him to hunt wherever he wants and whenever he wants. He has left his boot prints from southern Argentina to northern Canada - wherever geese or grouse or ducks or woodcock can be found. Dogs display a sincere affection for him. His shotguns have no time to collect dust. He is not infected with the disease of politically correct posturing. Gun Controllers and Pseudo-Environmentalists don't like him. This is the third volume of Major Peabody's shotgunning tales. About the Author Galen Winter lived in Latin America, traveling extensively while negotiating and managing contracts with Latin governments and companies. He returned to the United States as a corporation attorney in Milwaukee and in Chicago. Later, he opened a law office in northern Wisconsin where, he writes, "Man can associate with dogs and shotguns without arousing too much suspicion." After moving to Wisconsin, Winter gave up private work but became the Consultant in International Affairs for Federacion Internationale des Quiellers which took him from England to Calgary to Taiwan to southern Argentina and points in between. Winter has contributed hundreds of columns to several national and regional outdoor magazines. He has compiled a fish and wild game cookbook 500 Fish and Game Recipes (now in its fifth printing), written six volumes of short stories, and published two novels. Winter also found time to engage in his passion for hunting and fishing - preoccupations that have taken him from north of the Arctic Circle in Canada's Northwest Territories to Brazil's Amazon basin, Argentina's Patagonia, the waters off Ecuador, Costa Rica and Cuba, and many other places where fish and game occur. Winter holds a Political Science, a Masters in International Business Administration and a Doctor Juris degree.

Book excerpt: Lieutenant Eve Dallas must solve the murder of a seemingly ordinary family, and protect one small, terrified survivor in this novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series. No affairs. No criminal connections. No DNA. No clues. Lieutenant Eve Dallas may be the best cop in the city—not to mention having the lavish resources of her husband Roarke at her disposal—but the Swisher case has her baffled. The family members were murdered in their beds with brutal, military precision. The state-of-the-art security was breached, and the killers used night vision to find their way through the cozy middle-class house. Clearly, Dallas is dealing with pros. The only mistake they made was to overlook the nine-year-old girl cowering in the dark in the kitchen… Now Nixie Swisher is an orphan—and the sole eyewitness to a seemingly inexplicable crime. Kids are not Dallas’s strong suit. But Nixie needs a safe place to stay, and Dallas needs to solve this case. Not only because of the promise she made to Nixie. Not only for the cause of justice. But also to put to rest some of her own darkest memories—and deepest fears. With her partner Peabody on the job, and watching her back—and with Roarke providing the kind of help that only he can give—Lieutenant Eve Dallas is running after shadows, and dead-set on finding out who’s behind them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length biography of Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, one of the three notable Peabody sisters of Salem, Massachusetts, and sister-in-law of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Horace Marm. It traces the intricate private life and extraordinary career of one of nineteenth-century America's most important Transcendental writers and educational reformers. Peabody was a reformer devoted to education in the broadest, and yet most practical, senses. She saw the classroom as mediating between the needs of the individual and the claims of society. She taught in her own private schools and was an assistant in Bronson Alcott's Temple School. In her contacts with Ralph Waldo Emerson's Transcendental circle in the 1830s, and as publisher of the famous Dial and other imprints, she took a mediating position once more, claiming the need for historical knowledge to balance the movement's stress on individual intuition. She championed antislavery, European liberal revolutions, Spiritualism, and, in her last years, the Paiute Indians. She was, as Theodore Parker described her, the Boswell of her age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American literature abounds with orphans who experience adoption or placements that resemble adoption. These stories do more than recount adventures of children living away from home. They tell an American story of family and national identity. In narratives from the seventeenth to the early twentieth century, adoption functions as narrative event and trope that describes the American migratory experience, the impact of Calvinist faith, and the growth of democratic individualism. The roots of literary adoption appear in the discourse of Puritan settlers, who ambivalently took leave of their birth parent country and portrayed themselves as abandoned children. Believing they were chosen children of God, they also prayed for spiritual adoption and emulated God's grace by extending adoption to others. Nineteenth-century adoption literature develops from this notion of adoption as salvation and from simultaneous attachments to the Old World and the New. In domestic fiction of the mid-nineteenth century, adoption also reflects a focus on nurture in childrearing, increased mobility in the nation, and middle-class concerns over immigration and urbanization, assuaged when the orphan finds a proper, loving home. Adoption signals fresh starts and the opportunity for success without genealogical constraints, especially for white males, but inflected by gender and racial biases, it often entails dependency for girls and children of color. A complex signifier of difference, adoption gives voice to sometimes contradictory calls to origins and fresh beginning; to feelings of worthiness and unworthiness. In writings from Cotton Mather to Edith Wharton, it both replicates and offers an alternative to the genealogical norm, evoking ambivalence as it shapes national mythologies.
