Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) is enjoying a renaissance across the United States and around the world. CRCP has the potential to provide a long-term, "zero-maintenance," service life under heavy traffic loadings and challenging environmental conditions, provided proper design and quality construction practices are utilised. This book provides an overview of the CRCP technology and the major developments that have led to what are referred to herein as the "best practices" for CRCP design and construction. The purpose of this book is to provide the best practices information on rehabilitation strategies for extending the service life of continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCP). The procedures described in this book consist of defining the problem, identifying potential solutions, and selecting the preferred alternatives.

Book excerpt: In conducting this investigation, detailed surveys on 85 pavement projects in 7 States were made. These pavements were generally under 15 years old, and reinforced and continuously reinforced pavements. The results of this investigation are contained in the report as prepared by PCA. Some of the aspects of Portland Cement Concrete pavements covered include: 1) Categories and characteristics of PCC pavements; 2) Pavement problems, their causes and required maintenance; 3) A pavement performance and condition survey; 4) A charted summary, design, and construction practices of the states (available separately on request); 5) Construction and maintenance costs, and 6) Design and construction recommendations.

Book excerpt: A study of the performance of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) constructed on the Interstate highway system in Illinois has-been conducted. The major purpose is to determine the types, severities, amounts, and causes of distress. This information will then be used to develop optimum maintenance procedures to repair the distress that occurs, and preventative maintenance procedures to reduce the rate of distress occurrence. The distress data collected can also be used to update CRCP design procedures. Approximately 1230 miles of Interstate highway was surveyed, consisting of 7 to 10 in. (17-25 cm) slabs over granular and stabilized subbases. Distress found includes edge punchouts, steel ruptures, "D" cracking, blowups, construction joint failures, lug rotation, longitudinal cracking, distress related to construction problems, pumping, and shoulder deterioration. Heavy truck loads, excess free moisture, deicing salts, construction practice and poor aggregate quality in the CRCP slab are the major factors causing distress. CRCP slab thickness and foundation support have a very significant effect on structural distress development. "D" cracking is causing severe deterioration of several projects. Overall, the performance of the thicker CRCP slabs (i.e., 9-10 in.) has been very good under heavy truck traffic; however, the performance of many sections of thinner CRCP (i.e., 7-8 in.) has been poor, and is showing an accelerated rate of distress development over time. The amount of distress expected to occur, and the maintenance effort required in the next several years points strongly toward a need for the development of more efficient and durable ways of maintaining CRCP.

Book Synopsis Performance Studies of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement by : Kenneth H. McGhee
Download or read book Performance Studies of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement written by Kenneth H. McGhee and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of studies of the three continuously reinforced pavement projects near Charlottesville is reported. Of particular interest in these studies are the effects of the elimination of transverse reinforcing steel, the changing characteristics of shrinkage cracking with age, and the end movements of anchor sections. While the studies are somewhat inconclusive at this early age of the pavements, the following tentative conclusions are offered: 1. Cracks show a definite trend to become both more closely spaced and wider during the first 2 to 3 years of a continuously reinforced pavement's life. There is some inconclusive evidence that the widening process stabilizes after this time period. 2. While crack spacing can be influenced by weather conditions during pavement placement, there is no apparent relationship between crack width and either crack spacing or placement weather. 3. As expected, cracks are significantly wider at the surface during winter (pavement shrinking) than during summer (pavement expanding). (Note - Earlier studies have shown that cracks which are easily seen and measured at the surface are invisible in the immediate vicinity of the reinforcing steel.) 4. End anchor movement is very modest during the first year and seems to decrease slightly with age. There is a pronounced seasonal effect which produces joint movements in excess of the capabilities of poured joint sealants. 5. The elimination of full width transverse steel has had no effect on pavement performance for the first 2 to 3 years. Acting upon a recommendation from these studies, the Department's pavement design engineer has instituted a requirement for the use of preformed compression seals in all expansion joints adjacent to the anchor slabs of continuously reinforced pavements.
Book Synopsis Computer-based Guidelines for Concrete Pavements by :

Book excerpt: This report documents enhancements incorporated in the (HIgh PERformance PAVing) HIPERPAV II software. Enhancements made within this project include the addition of two major modules: a module to predict the performance of jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) as affected by earlyage factors, and a module to predict the early-age behavior (first 72 hours) and early life (up to 1 year) of continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP). Two additional Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) studies were also incorporated: one that predicts dowel bearing stresses as a function of environmental loading during the early age, and a module for optimization of concrete paving mixes as a function of 3-day strength, 28-day strength, and cost. Additional functionality to the software was also incorporated by reviewing and prioritizing the feedback provided by users of the first generation of the software, HIPERPAV I.
