This book was released on 2007-02-06 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Irrelevance and Relevance of the Christian Message' is a transcript of Paul Tillich's 1963 Earl Lectures at the Graduate Theological Union. Delivered just two years before his death, these lectures present Tillich's heartfelt and deeply personal understanding of the relevance of Christian preaching and Christian theology. Why, Tillich asks, has the Christian message become seemingly irrelevant to contemporary society? Is the gospel able to give answers to the questions raised by the existentialist analysis of the human predicament? Yes, he answers -- but in order to do so Christian teaching and preaching need to undergo dramatic renewal, the root of which requires an affirmation of love as central to Christian identity. Further, we need to recognize that this task is not limited to preachers and theologians; all of us together are responsible for the irrelevance or the relevance of the gospel in our time.
Book Synopsis The Fabric of Paul Tillich's Theology by : David H. Kelsey

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By taking seriously Tillich's claim to be a confessional Church theologian rather than a metaphysician with religious interests, this carefully ordered study gains a fresh perspective on the structure of argument upon which his theological enterprise rests. Scriptural material is shown to control his judgments in much the same way that literature controls those of the literary critic--a particularly illuminating comparison in view of his argument that the verbal icon provided by the biblical picture of Jesus as the Christ bears analogia imaginis to the historical Jesus and hence provides the sole access to the original Christian revelation. Tillich's movement from symbols as data to theological judgments as conclusions is seen to be warranted, not by his ontology, but by his presentation of the phenomenology of revelatory events. Though historical study of Jesus and of the Bible is in principle irrelevant to this use of scripture, his confusions in this area are examined, and the structural flaws in his accounts of the biblical picture of Jesus are shown to yield a Christian theology in which Christology is oddly dispensable. Finally, his discussion of God is used as a test case for the analysis of the general structure of his argument, and the various sorts of conclusions that he feels Scripture authorizes him to draw are cogently appraised.

Download or read book Paul Tillich written by Richard Pomeroy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-01-23 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pomeroy gives the reader a clear view of the Systematic Theology of Paul Tillich, perhaps the greatest theologian of the 20th century. Tillich's theology addresses a wide range of theological issues beginning with the nature of God and ending with the nature of Eternal Life. Using the latest in social science analysis, Tillich identifies specific conditions confronted by individuals and nations, addressing each from a Bible-based theological standpoint. At the end of each chapter Pomeroy illustrates the issues at hand with real life stories or reflections from leading scientists, theologians and social scientists. This is then followed by discussion questions. The book is a welcome relief for theologians and lay people alike as it has depth without all those written words. For a mainline church study group it is a primer.

Book Synopsis The Cross in Our Context by : Douglas John Hall
Download or read book The Cross in Our Context written by Douglas John Hall and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this small gem of theological reflection, North America's foremost "theologian of the cross" offers a profound and compelling contemplation on the relevance of the church's most fundamental confession. Hall ponders what confessing Jesus as crucified means in today's context, one that is postmodern, pluralistic, multicultural, and in some respects post-Christian. A digest of his monumental trilogy, this book lays out in brief compass the heart of Hall's theology of the cross, contrasting it sharply with the theology of established Christianity, showing how it reframes classical Christology and soteriology, and drawing the implications for what it means to be human, for Christian ethics, and for the church.

Book Synopsis Theologia Crucis by : Robert Cady Saler
Download or read book Theologia Crucis written by Robert Cady Saler and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recovery of Paul and Luther's theology of the cross has been an enduring legacy of twentieth-century theology, and in our own day the topic has continued to expand as more and more global voices join the conversation. The array of literature produced on the cross and its theological significance can be overwhelming. In this readable and concise introduction, Robert Saler provides an overview of the key motifs present in theologians seeking to understand how the cross of Jesus Christ informs the work of theology, ministry, and activism on behalf of victims of injustice today. He also demonstrates how theology of the cross can be a lens through which to understand crucial questions of our time related to the nature of beauty, God's redemption, and the forces which seek to overwhelm both. Ranging from Luther and Bonhoeffer to James Cone and feminist theologians, Saler makes this literature accessible to all who wish to understand how the cross shapes Christian claims about God and God's work on behalf of the world.

Download or read book The Courage to Be written by Paul Tillich and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-26 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Courage to Be introduced issues of theology and culture to a general readership. The book examines ontic, moral, and spiritual anxieties across history and in modernity. The author defines courage as the self-affirmation of one's being in spite of a threat of nonbeing. He relates courage to anxiety, anxiety being the threat of non-being and the courage to be what we use to combat that threat. Tillich outlines three types of anxiety and thus three ways to display the courage to be. Tillich writes that the ultimate source of the courage to be is the "God above God," which transcends the theistic idea of God and is the content of absolute faith (defined as "the accepting of the acceptance without somebody or something that accepts").
