Book Synopsis This Scribe, My Hand by : Ben Belitt
Download or read book This Scribe, My Hand written by Ben Belitt and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1998-12 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a lifetime’s achievement by one of America’s outstanding poets of the twentieth century. Though his earliest poems were published more than sixty years ago, Ben Belitt’s works in sum are likely to strike readers today with the force of unprecedented encounter. A poet of abundance and sometimes carnivalesque riotousness, Belitt also calls to mind the intensity and eruptiveness of Hopkins, the double passion for the infinite and the empirical exemplified by Neruda, and the lustrous word-painting associated with Keatsian Romanticism. But as these diverse predecessors suggest, Belitt is altogether an original, whose derivation is as multiple as his figuration. His concerns range from the appalled enthrallment with violence and disorder to the rage to learn how one can live in chance and confront the mandates of mortality. Scrupulously attentive to place, moving steadily in his works between northern vistas (Vermont, Block Island, New York) and southern (Mexico, Spain, Italy), Belitt is also haunted by a sense of fated displacements and havoc. Many of his best poems are elegiac, and his autobiographical works possess a posthumous air. In “This Scribe, My Hand,” perhaps his greatest poem in this genre, Belitt offers a powerful tribute to Keats while concurrently meditating upon his own forfeits and failures. The startling poèm-en-prose “School of the Soldier,” previously unpublished in book form, is also included. At once poignant in their confrontation of loss and defiant in their insistence upon connection, meaning, and wholeness, Belitt’s poems offer readers a fresh opportunity to discover “the fascination of what is difficult” and distinctive, marvelously rich and achingly human.

Book excerpt: Diverse poems of a singular voice, Ben Belitt is a poet of iconoclastic passions, one who is able to take personal events and transform them into magical verse with masterful sequencing of words, images, and thoughts. He has always had a particular gift for turning autobiography into art, his personal geography into verse of universal meaning and poignance.
Download or read book Fierce Poise written by Alexander Nemerov and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A National Book Critics Circle finalist • One of Vogue's Best Books of the Year A dazzling biography of one of the twentieth century's most respected painters, Helen Frankenthaler, as she came of age as an artist in postwar New York “The magic of Alexander Nemerov's portrait of Helen Frankenthaler in Fierce Poise is that it reads like one of Helen's paintings. His poetic descriptions of her work and his rich insights into the years when Helen made her first artistic breakthroughs are both light and lush, seemingly easy and yet profound. His book is an ode to a truly great artist who, some seventy years after this story begins, we are only now beginning to understand.” ―Mary Gabriel, author of Ninth Street Women At the dawn of the 1950s, a promising and dedicated young painter named Helen Frankenthaler, fresh out of college, moved back home to New York City to make her name. By the decade's end, she had succeeded in establishing herself as an important American artist of the postwar period. In the years in between, she made some of the most daring, head-turning paintings of her day and also came into her own as a woman: traveling the world, falling in and out of love, and engaging in an ongoing artistic education. She also experienced anew―and left her mark on―the city in which she had been raised in privilege as the daughter of a judge, even as she left the security of that world to pursue her artistic ambitions. Brought to vivid life by acclaimed art historian Alexander Nemerov, these defining moments--from her first awed encounter with Jackson Pollock's drip paintings to her first solo gallery show to her tumultuous breakup with eminent art critic Clement Greenberg―comprise a portrait as bold and distinctive as the painter herself. Inspired by Pollock and the other male titans of abstract expressionism but committed to charting her own course, Frankenthaler was an artist whose talent was matched only by her unapologetic determination to distinguish herself in a man's world. Fierce Poise is an exhilarating ride through New York's 1950s art scene and a brilliant portrait of a young artist through the moments that shaped her.

Book Synopsis Trying Conclusions: New and Selected Poems, 1961 - 1991 by : Howard Nemerov
Download or read book Trying Conclusions: New and Selected Poems, 1961 - 1991 written by Howard Nemerov and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2023-01-18 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shot through with his trademark humour, ‘Trying Conclusions’ is the fourteenth collection of poems from the lauded writer. Containing twenty-three poems, the topics vary wildly, from short verses on waiting rooms and fast cars to longer musings on his family, war, and the US Congress. Nemerov’s sense of the satirical is best seen in shorter offerings, where he takes a literary look at life from the other end of the telescope. A superb introduction to the works of one of the 20th Century’s most subversive scribes. Howard Nemerov (1920 – 1991) was an American novelist and poet, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1978. His novels are characterised by the use of self-deprecating wit and an ongoing sense of irony. While his books tended to satirise 20th Century American life, his poems often focussed on the beauty and innocence of nature. In addition, Nemerov also worked as a scriptwriter, most notably on the film, ‘Tall Story,’ starring Anthony Perkins and Jane Fonda.
