Book Synopsis Focusing on Paul by : Andrie du Toit
Download or read book Focusing on Paul written by Andrie du Toit and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970’s, due to serious epistemological flaws, the demise of traditional New Testament research paradigms became imminent. A new generation of scholars started the search for a fresh approach, based on scientifically sound principles. Working within the stimulating atmosphere of the New Testament Society of South Africa, the author was one of the pioneers in developing a new, multi-dimensional research approach for New Testament studies. The articles in the present volume, written over a period of 25 years, reflect part of this journey, as viewed from a Pauline perspective. Combining the positive aspects of the traditional biblical research paradigms with the important insights of modern linguistics, literary science, semantics and pragmatics, particularly rhetoric, the author investigates the convergence of various influences in Paul’s pre-christian career. He proposes new possibilities of understanding Paul’s language and style, such as hyperbolical contrasts, typical of his Semitic background. Various aspects of his strategies of persuasion are investigated, such as creating an ethos, vilification, alienation and re-identification. The majority of articles concentrate on central elements in Pauline theology: belief in the resurrection of Jesus, the centrality of grace, the in Christ and related formulae, faith and obedience, justification in Romans, Christian identity, ethics and ethos, as portrayed in Romans.
Book Synopsis The Stellenbosch Mafia by : Pieter du Toit
Download or read book The Stellenbosch Mafia written by Pieter du Toit and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 50km outside of Cape Town lies the beautiful town of Stellenbosch, nestled against vineyards and blue mountains that stretch to the sky. Here reside some of South Africa's wealthiest individuals: all male, all Afrikaans – and all stinking rich. Johann Rupert, Jannie Mouton, Markus Jooste and Christo Weise, to name a few. Julius Malema refers to them scathingly as 'The Stellenbosch Mafia', the very worst example of white monopoly capital. But who really are these mega-wealthy individuals, and what influence do they exert not only on Stellenbosch but more broadly on South African society? Author Pieter du Toit begins by exploring the roots of Stellenbosch, one of the wealthiest towns in South Africa and arguably the cradle of Afrikanerdom. This is the birthplace of apartheid leaders, intellectuals, newspaper empires and more. He then closely examines this 'club' of billionaires. Who are they and, crucially, how are they connected? What network of boardroom membership, alliances and family connections exist? Who are the 'old guard' and who are the 'inkommers', and what about the youngsters desperate to make their mark? He looks at the collapse of Steinhoff: what went wrong, and whether there are other companies at risk of a similar fate. He examines the control these men have over cultural life, including pulling the strings in South Africa rugby.

Book Synopsis Rediscovering Paul by : Norman R. Petersen
Download or read book Rediscovering Paul written by Norman R. Petersen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-08-18 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, Norman R. Petersen integrates contemporary literary-critical, sociological, and anthropological insights into the traditional arena of historical-critical methods. he demonstrates how these new approaches can be used to interpret biblical texts, especially Paul's letters. The Letter to Philemon serves as a case study. Yet Petersen focuses on the narrative world of Paul as well, for one cannot be truly understood without the other. This work articulates a sociology of letters, explores the social structures which underlie the social relations of the actors in Paul's world, and deals with the systems of belief, knowledge, and value that define the identities of these actors and motivate their actions. Here is cutting-edge scholarship.
Download or read book Joseph Paul Vorst written by Glen Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2017-10 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short and tumultuous life of Joseph Paul Vorst (American, born Germany, 1897-1947) reads like a proxy for the 20th century. Raised in poverty, Vorst lived through two world wars (he fought and was injured as a German solider in World War I). After his immigration, he struggled through the Great Depression, witnessed the rise of the Nazis in Europe, and experienced prejudice against German immigrants in America. Fleeing Germany alone as his renowned teachers were censored and labeled degenerate one by one, he decried fascism and was embraced by artists in America such as Thomas Hart Benton and Joe Jones. He exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Library of Congress, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the New York World¿s Fair, the Kansas City Art Institute/Nelson-Atkins Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Institute, the St. Louis City Art Museum, the Dayton Art Institute, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Golden Gate International Exhibition, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and even the White House. These are Vorst¿s museum credits that occurred within a span of ten years in the United States. He also showed in commercial fine art galleries of distinction and historical importance in St. Louis and New York City.

Book excerpt: This commentary on Polycarp's Epistle to the Philippians and the Martyrdom of Polycarp includes extensive introductions, the Greek or Latin texts, facing English translations, and substantial comments on each passage. The preliminary material investigates Polycarpian traditions and reconstructs an outline of his life. The introductory studies for both Philippians and the Martyrdom discuss text and manuscript traditions, date and place of composition, historical setting, literary genre and style, unity and integrity, purpose and themes, theology, and post-composition influence. The volume also explores communal self-definition, moral formation, and the transmission of traditions, including the use of documents now found in the New Testament. The commentary proceeds passage by passage, but also includes lengthy discussions of critical issues and key interpretive questions. The investigations survey the current status of relevant scholarship and contain balanced discussions of controversial topics and scholarly debates.

Book Synopsis The Universal Christ by : Richard Rohr
Download or read book The Universal Christ written by Richard Rohr and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From one of the world’s most influential spiritual thinkers, a long-awaited book exploring what it means that Jesus was called “Christ,” and how this forgotten truth can restore hope and meaning to our lives. “Anyone who strives to put their faith into action will find encouragement and inspiration in the pages of this book.”—Melinda Gates In his decades as a globally recognized teacher, Richard Rohr has helped millions realize what is at stake in matters of faith and spirituality. Yet Rohr has never written on the most perennially talked about topic in Christianity: Jesus. Most know who Jesus was, but who was Christ? Is the word simply Jesus’s last name? Too often, Rohr writes, our understandings have been limited by culture, religious debate, and the human tendency to put ourselves at the center. Drawing on scripture, history, and spiritual practice, Rohr articulates a transformative view of Jesus Christ as a portrait of God’s constant, unfolding work in the world. “God loves things by becoming them,” he writes, and Jesus’s life was meant to declare that humanity has never been separate from God—except by its own negative choice. When we recover this fundamental truth, faith becomes less about proving Jesus was God, and more about learning to recognize the Creator’s presence all around us, and in everyone we meet. Thought-provoking, practical, and full of deep hope and vision, The Universal Christ is a landmark book from one of our most beloved spiritual writers, and an invitation to contemplate how God liberates and loves all that is.
Download or read book Lend Me Your Ears written by Max Atkinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The room darkens and grows hushed, all eyes to the front as the screen comes to life. Eagerly the audience starts to thumb the pages of their handouts, following along breathlessly as the slides go by one after the other...We're not sure what the expected outcome was when PowerPoint first emerged as the industry standard model of presentation, but reality has shown few positive results. Research reveals that there is much about this format that audiences positively dislike, and that the old school rules of classical rhetoric are still as effective as they ever were for maximizing impact. Renowned communications researcher, consultant, and speech coach Max Atkinson presents these findings and more in a groundbreaking and refreshing approach that highlights the secrets of successful communication, and shows how anyone can put these into practice and become an effective speaker or presenter.
Book Synopsis Arts of Impoverishment by : Leo Bersani
Download or read book Arts of Impoverishment written by Leo Bersani and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why taunt and flout us, as Beckett's writing does? Why discourage us from seeing, as Mark Rothko's paintings often can? Why immobilize and daze us, as Alain Resnais' films sometimes will? Why, Leo Bersnai and Ulysse Dutoit ask, would three acknowledged masters of their media make work deliberately opaque and inhospitable to an audience? This book shows how such crippling moves may signal a profoundly original - and profoundly anti-modernist - renunciation of art's authority.
