Download or read book Conrad’s Drama written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conrad’s Drama: Contemporary Reviews and Observations collects both book reviews and performance reviews of Conrad’s three plays: The Secret Agent, One Day More, and Laughing Anne. These reviews and observations show how Conrad’s plays were received by his contemporaries. More than this, however, Conrad’s Drama reveals the larger conversations surrounding his plays: the state of British drama in the early 20th century, the role the drama critic has in a play’s reception, and the difficulty most fiction writers experience in trying to write for the stage. No other reference work exists for those studying Conrad’s plays, and this volume should prove to be an indispensable reference work for those working on this topic. Conrad’s Drama received an Honorable Mention in the Joseph Conrad Society of America’s Adam Gillon Book Prize in Conrad Studies for books published 2018-2020.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church by : Andrew Louth
Download or read book The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church written by Andrew Louth and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 4474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniquely authoritative and wide-ranging in its scope, The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is the indispensable reference work on all aspects of the Christian Church. It contains over 6,500 cross-referenced A-Z entries, and offers unrivalled coverage of all aspects of this vast and often complex subject, from theology; churches and denominations; patristic scholarship; and the bible; to the church calendar and its organization; popes; archbishops; other church leaders; saints; and mystics. In this new edition, great efforts have been made to increase and strengthen coverage of non-Anglican denominations (for example non-Western European Christianity), as well as broadening the focus on Christianity and the history of churches in areas beyond Western Europe. In particular, there have been extensive additions with regards to the Christian Church in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, and Australasia. Significant updates have also been included on topics such as liturgy, Canon Law, recent international developments, non-Anglican missionary activity, and the increasingly important area of moral and pastoral theology, among many others. Since its first appearance in 1957, the ODCC has established itself as an essential resource for ordinands, clergy, and members of religious orders, and an invaluable tool for academics, teachers, and students of church history and theology, as well as for the general reader.
Book Synopsis Theo-Drama: Theological Dramatic Theory, Vol. 1 by : Hans Urs von Balthasar
Download or read book Theo-Drama: Theological Dramatic Theory, Vol. 1 written by Hans Urs von Balthasar and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the introduction to the second part of the trilogy which is von BalthasarÕs major work. The Glory of the Lord approaches revelation from the standpoint of the beautiful. The final part of the trilogy, the Theo-Logic, will treat Christian revelation from the standpoint of the true. In this first volume von Balthasar shows how many of the trends of modern theology (e.g. ÒeventÓ, ÒhistoryÓ, ÒorthopraxyÓ, ÒdialogueÓ, Òpolitical theologyÓ) point to an understanding of human and cosmic reality as a divine drama. He will then consider objections to such a theological dramatic theory and also the relationship between the Church and the theatre. This volume assembles the materials and the themes that will make it possible in subsequent volumes to develop this theological dramatic theory. "Émeeting Balthasar was for me the beginning of a lifelong friendship I can only be thankful for. Never again have I found anyone with such a comprehensive theological and humanistic education as Balthasar and de Lubac, and I cannot even begin to say how much I owe to my encounter with them." ÑJoseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) Ê

Book Synopsis Highlights in Anglo-American Drama by : Vesna Bratić
Download or read book Highlights in Anglo-American Drama written by Vesna Bratić and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents perspectives on a number of aspects of modern Anglo-American drama and dramatists written by scholars from ex-Yugoslav republics, resulting from long years of common interest and cooperation in the field between the corresponding English Departments in the region. The volume was inspired by the Word across Cultures conference, organised by the Institute of Foreign Languages of the University of Montenegro in Podgorica, Montenegro, in July 2014. The researchers who participated in the conference’s literature section were testament to the growing interest in drama among regional literature scholars. The book will appeal to both an academic and non-academic readership. The former will, certainly, benefit from this book since English and, especially, American drama is not appropriately represented by the number of published books it deserves world-wide. The volume provides a South-East European perspective on Anglo-American drama, and represents a valuable addition to existing drama scholarship, since all the contributors are from the ex-Yugoslav republics and write from a standpoint of multiple othernesses. It will also be of interest to theatre and film scholars, as well as theatre and film enthusiasts, because of the variety of approaches adopted in the papers.

Book Synopsis Santayana the Philosopher by : Daniel Moreno
Download or read book Santayana the Philosopher written by Daniel Moreno and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarding Santayana it has been claimed that he lacks a system while contradicting himself in outrageous ways. An attentive analysis of his complete œuvre, however, reveals something else entirely. It is not easy to classify a thinker as a Platonic materialist, an ironic nihilist, a spiritual atheist, and a conservative without political commitment, but, if one respects his own language, one discerns an astonishing, little-known Santayana, whose philosophical leitmotif consists in: 1) detecting the numerous “false steps,” logical and moral, supplied by the imagination when it confuses things with the names that designate them, or the world with the feelings that it provokes in the human animal—these errors assume diverse faces: pantheism, moralism, egotism, subjectivism, transcendentalism, Platonism, Puritanism, and utopianism; 2) avoiding these illusions in such a way as to keep the spiritual door open as a form of life to be lived out in an honest fashion; 3) recognizing the natural origin of these temptations and asking oneself what moves humans to succumb imperceptibly to these mistakes, at times tragic, at others comical, and what precautions one can take to remain cognizant of the deceitful leaps that can hijack one’s life; and 4) proposing as an alternative the radical distinction between essence and existence, which leads him to distinguish four realms of being: the realm of essence, the realm of matter, the realm of truth, and the realm of spirit. Essence as logical identity, matter as contingent existence, truth as frozen history, and spirit as the flames that part from contingency and approximate the eternal. An attempt has been made in this book to expand on and clarify these questions.
