Book Synopsis Analogy and Contrast in Language by : Karolina Krawczak
Download or read book Analogy and Contrast in Language written by Karolina Krawczak and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within cognitive and functional approaches to language structure and grammaticality, analogy and contrast represent two fundamental human cognitive capacities, which, up to now, have mostly been examined separately. This volume seeks to bridge that gap and in doing so it brings together cutting-edge theoretical and empirical research in the field. The chapters in this book examine analogy and contrast across a variety of languages (English, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Russian), for different language phenomena (constructions, lexical semantics, morphology, sentence structure, text organization), and with the use of various methods (corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, experimental methods, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis). This state-of-the-art research presented in the book should be of interest to specialists within Cognitive Linguistics, corpus linguistics, construction grammar, discourse analysis, translation studies, metaphor research, and cross-cultural research.
Book Synopsis Cross-Disciplinary Issues in Compounding by : Sergio Scalise
Download or read book Cross-Disciplinary Issues in Compounding written by Sergio Scalise and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of compounds is currently at the center of attention in many areas of both theoretical and applied linguistics. This volume brings together contributions by experts involved in a wide range of such areas, based on a large number of diverse languages – spoken and signed. The fact that compound constructions are at the interface of the various components of language – morphology, syntax, phonology, and semantics – makes them ideal testing grounds for models of grammatical architecture, as seen in a number of these chapters. The breadth and depth of the coverage of topics, as well as the unified bibliography, make this volume a basic reference source for those interested in current theoretical as well as experimental approaches to compounding, and thus to theoretical linguists as well as psycholinguists and researchers in related fields of cognitive science.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Compounding by : Rochelle Lieber
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Compounding written by Rochelle Lieber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive review of theoretical work on the linguistics and psycholinguistics of compound words and combines it with a series of surveys of compounding in a variety of languages from a wide range of language families. Compounding is an effective way to create and express new meanings. Compound words are segmentable into their constituents so that new items can often be understood on first presentation. However, as keystone, keynote, and keyboard, and breadboard, sandwich-board, and mortarboard show, the relation between components is often far from straightforward. The question then arises, as to how far compound sequences are analysed at each encounter and how far they are stored in the brain as single lexical items? The nature and processing of compounds thus offer an unusually direct route to how language operates in the mind, as well as providing the means of investigating important aspects of morphology, and lexical semantics, and insights to child language acquisition and the organization of the mental lexicon. This book is the first to report on the state of the art on these and other central topics, including the classification and typology of compounds, and cross-linguistic research on the subject in different frameworks and from synchronic and diachronic perspectives.
Book Synopsis English in Computer-Mediated Communication by : Lauren Squires
Download or read book English in Computer-Mediated Communication written by Lauren Squires and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the nature of English use within contexts of computer-mediated communication (CMC). CMC includes technologies through which not only is language transmitted, but cultures are formed, ideologies are shaped, power is contested, and sociolinguistic boundaries are crossed and blurred. The volume therefore examines the English language in particular in CMC – what it looks like, what it accomplishes, and what it means to speakers.

Book Synopsis Bibliography of Morphology, 1960-1985 by : Robert Beard
Download or read book Bibliography of Morphology, 1960-1985 written by Robert Beard and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than an attempt at an exhaustive bibliography of morphology, this is a collection of major and selected minor works of theoretical interest in the broadest sense. The area of morphology represented here exhaustively is contemporary (generative) theoretical morphology, interpreted broadly enough to include theoretically interesting structuralist works, works aimed at explaining deep motivations of morphology or pertinent to contemporary theoretical morphology. Selected descriptive works have been included as well; it is not at all simple to draw a line between descriptive works of theoretical interest and fundamentally theoretical works, and in addition we hope to provide entry points into a variety languages for morphologists seeking language-specific evidence for general hypotheses.
