Book Synopsis The Process of Authority by : Jan Dušek
Download or read book The Process of Authority written by Jan Dušek and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authority of canonical texts, especially of the Bible, is often described in static definitions. However, the authority of these texts was acquired as well as exercised in a dynamic process of transmission and reception. This book analyzes selected aspects of this historical process. Attention is paid to biblical master-texts and to other texts related to the “biblical worlds” in various historical periods and contexts. The studies examine particular texts, textual variants, translations, paraphrases and other elements in the process of textual transmission. The range covered spans from the Iron Age, through the Old Testament texts, their manuscripts and other texts from Qumran, the Septuagint, down to the New Testament, Apocrypha, Coptic texts, Patristics, and even modern translations of the Bible. The book is particularly intended for those interested in the history of reception and transmission of biblical texts and in the textual criticism.

Download or read book Patrology written by Otto Bardenhewer and published by . This book was released on 1908 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otto Bardenhewer's Patrology is certainly not the most recent work in the field. But sound judgment is never obsolete - Bardenhewer's concise, pellucid analysis of the church fathers is still valuable today, over a century after it was published. For generations, his work has been treasured by experts and novices alike for its penetrating insight and easy accessibility. Many fathers are given fuller treatment here than in any modern handbook. And today, every work cited in Bardenhewer's copious bibliographies has entered the public domain - what a boon to researchers of the information age!

Book Synopsis Studies on First Clement by : William Wrede
Download or read book Studies on First Clement written by William Wrede and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the advice of his former teacher and mentor, Adolf von Harnack, William Wrede committed himself to the task of writing a dissertation on 1 Clement, which was originally published under the title Untersuchungen zum 1. Clemensbrief and has now been published here in English translation for the first time under the title Studies on 1 Clement. In this volume, Wrede investigates the ecclesiastical structure of the early church as well as the significance and function of the Old Testament in 1 Clement. Though overshadowed by his later work, The Messianic Secret, Wrede's work on 1 Clement served as a tempered and solid basis for later investigations of the letter, even when those investigations part ways with Wrede's conclusions.
Book Synopsis Retrieving Catholicity in American Protestantism by : John Williamson Nevin
Download or read book Retrieving Catholicity in American Protestantism written by John Williamson Nevin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of essays on church history by John Williamson Nevin (1803–86), the theological creator of Mercersburg Theology. Nevin and his colleague Philip Schaff were attempting to reorient American ecclesial thought to be more historical. Most American theologians of the period posited a period of spiritual decline soon after the New Testament, lasting until the Protestant Reformation. They believed the ongoing task of the children of the Reformation was to remake the church in the mold of the apostolic faith. In these essays, Nevin was seeking to establish a more unified historical narrative that saw the Reformation as an essential outgrowth of the medieval Catholic church. Nevin’s search for an answer to the church question—what is the church?—demanded a focus on history as an unfolding, teleological journey. Nevin’s search for history is part of his larger search for catholicity in the American Protestant church. These writings are an important part of the larger theological project that is known as Mercersburg Theology, which is being explored in the volumes of this series.
