This book was released on 1991 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conceptual framework was developed to guide the study. Data was obtained by interviewing ten adult patients recently transferred from two midwestern hospital critical care units. Four categories of perceptions were identified. These include overall perceptions, perceptions of equipment, perceptions of care and perceptions related to contacts with people. The experience produced fear related to unknown outcome and unit activity. Explanations were helpful in alleviating fear. Subjects perceived care as good and nurses as competent. Equipment made subjects feel secure, but was annoying and uncomfortable. Implications for nursing include a basis for critical care nurses to evaluate patient behaviors and plan holistic nursing care related to perceptions.

Exploring essential knowledge and competencies, the authors explore research, evidence and real life practice before outlining practical skills which will empower nurses to deliver quality care. Written by nurses and health professionals from both practice and academia, Care in Nursing explores how care underpins every element of nursing including: patient centred care, cultural diversity, sociology, psychology, communication, partnership working, law and ethics, management and leadership, and more. A specific chapter also addresses how nurses can develop self-care techniques to meet the pressures and demands of a challenging yet ultimately rewarding career. Relevant to nurses in all fields and a diverse range of clinical and non-clinical settings, this is essential reading for nursing students, qualified nurses, mentors, nursing academics as well as nurse managers and leaders.

Such practical attention to the concept of caring in critical care is crucial to the therapeutic nurse-family relationship. The purpose of this study was to design and test an instrument to measure the perceptions of family members and nurses about the relative importance of 50 nurse-caring behaviors towards family members in critical care." --
