Book excerpt: The trending conversations amongst teachers and other professionals are showing that detention rates for student school behaviors are climbing drastically; thus, the stress on teachers also rises as they are pressured to teach a curriculum so their students can be prepared to take the end of year test. Yet, when asked by many teachers, they attest that more time is spent on controlling the classroom than on actual teaching. There can be several reasons why student behaviors have plummeted, however, this course is built on the preface that rather than to explore the reasons that caused the stats, we should address and teach Personal Development and SELF DISCIPLINE skills to empower the students as individuals. Starting at an early age, students can learn and unlearn behaviors. Parents fall into the era of being stressed as they attempt to parent their kids while they fight the economic battle of providing for their family. This challenge belongs to all of us to help mold the next generation of leaders.

This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone can imagine their future self, even very young children, and this future self is usually positive and education-linked. To make progress toward an aspired future or away from a feared future requires people to plan and take action. Unfortunately, most people often start too late and commit minimal effort to ineffective strategies that lead their attention elsewhere. As a result, their high hopes and earnest resolutions often fall short. In Pathways to Success Through Identity-Based Motivation Daphna Oyserman focuses on situational constraints and affordances that trigger or impede taking action. Focusing on when the future-self matters and how to reduce the shortfall between the self that one aspires to become and the outcomes that one actually attains, Oyserman introduces the reader to the core theoretical framework of identity-based motivation (IBM) theory. IBM theory is the prediction that people prefer to act in identity-congruent ways but that the identity-to-behavior link is opaque for a number of reasons (the future feels far away, difficulty of working on goals is misinterpreted, and strategies for attaining goals do not feel identity-congruent). Oyserman's book goes on to also include the stakes and how the importance of education comes into play as it improves the lives of the individual, their family, and their society. The framework of IBM theory and how to achieve it is broken down into three parts: how to translate identity-based motivation into a practical intervention, an outline of the intervention, and empirical evidence that it works. In addition, the book also includes an implementation manual and fidelity measures for educators utilizing this book to intervene for the improvement of academic outcomes.

Book excerpt: This book is intended to motivate persons working in the human and social service occupations toward fuller personal development as well as to improve professional competence. The first part discusses the process of becoming a more fully functioning person. Human potential, barriers to personal growth, self-fulfillment, and seeking pathways to growth are all discussed. An emerging framework for holistic education is also examined. Wellness as a way of life, and coping with the stresses of life are discussed. The second part looks at feelings and their purpose. Understanding feelings and interpreting the language of feelings are examined. Protecting, defending, and enhancing self-esteem are discussed. Management of feelings is explained, and the meaning of encouragement is explored as the essential element in the human interaction process that facilitates growth and change. Symptoms and sources of discouragement are examined. The Adlerian concept of encouragement is extended to the role of encouragement in developing human potential and the realization of human possibilities. The third part examines the concept of creativity. Methods for activating the imagination are explored. The importance of values is addressed, including a discussion on the function of guilt and the role of values in decision making. The fourth part describes types of stressors. Techniques of physical exercise and relaxation are described as means for preventing the harmful effects of stress. Two approaches for coping with stress are presented. (LLL)

Here, he collects pearls of wisdom from the sacred treasuries of cultures around the globe-lofty thoughts about religious aspirations, temporal life, and moral conduct-interspersed with his own philosophies on matters such as the soul, sin, lust, anger, vanity, false religion, false science, and more. First published posthumously in 1919, this remains an inspirational work... and one that illuminates the mind of one of our most esteemed writers. Russian writer COUNT LEV ("LEO") NIKOLAYEVICH TOLSTOY (1828-1910) is best known for his novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877).

Book excerpt: In Pathways to Individuality, veteran researcher and scholar Arnold Buss examines the personality traits we share with other animals-and those that set us apart from other animals, the social traits that make us distinctly human. Within those general social traits, there's much variability, as Buss explains in this new book, usually differentiated during the crucial periods of human development-and that's what makes us individuals. Humans make up the only species that has an extended period of childhood-we play and explore more than other animals-during which our human traits become canalized and differentiated: Our early interactions with our social environment influence and sharpen the neural and behavioral pathways that distinguish our distinct individuality. In turn, we seek to influence those environments we are drawn to and that help shape our individuality. Drawing from his own published research over a half-century of teaching and writing on personality, Buss masterfully summarizes key theories and recent advances in the study of temperament (aggression, dominance, etc.), the self (self-conscious shyness, self-esteem, identity), and abnormal behavior and style as crucial dimensions in understanding personality and individual differences.
