Book excerpt: Freshly isolated rat proximal tubules and cultured rabbit tubules exposed to anoxia (100% N2) die during reoxygenation unless pH is lowered or verapamil, nifedipine, trifluoropirazine of W-7 are administered. Thus, cell death and injury from increased calcium influx or calcium-calmodulin interactions are prevented. In addition, we have determined that various methods of lowering tissue ATP does not appear to compromise the baseline or subsequent recovery of cellular function after ischemia. Using NMR technology we have also followed renal tissue metabolism during and after hypotensive shock. The efficacy of various treatment protocols in shock will be evaluated in the coming year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, 20% of all injured combatants die on the battlefield before they can be evacuated to a field hospital. Blood lossâ€"hemorrhageâ€"is the single major cause of death among those killed in action whose lives might otherwise be saved. Fluid resuscitation and the treatment of hypovolemia (the abnormally decreased volume of circulating fluid in the body) offer the greatest opportunity for reducing mortality and morbidity associated with battlefield casualties. In Fluid Resuscitation, a committee of experts assess current resuscitation fluids and protocols for the treatment of combat casualties and make recommendations for future research. Chapters focus on the pathophysiology of acute hemorrhagic shock, experience with and complications of fluid resuscitation, novel approaches to the treatment of shock, protocols of care at the site of injury, and future directions for research. The committee explicitly describes the similarities and differences between acute medical care during combat and civilian emergency trauma care. Fluid Resuscitation should help energize and focus research in both civilian and military emergency care and help save the lives of citizens and soldiers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anaerobiosis and Stemness: An evolutionary paradigm provides a context for understanding the many complexities and evolutionary features of stem cells and the clinical implications of anaerobiosis stem cells. Combining theoretical and experimental knowledge, the authors provide a broad understanding of how the absence or low concentration of oxygen can play an influential role in the maintenance and self-renewal of stem cells and stem cell differentiation. This understanding has clinical implications for the fields of regenerative medicine, cancer biology and transplantation, as well as cell engineering and cell therapy. Anaerobiosis and Stemness is an important resource for stem cell and developmental biologists alike, as well as oncologists, cancer biologists, and researchers using stem cells for regeneration. Highlights the molecular and evolutionary features of stem cells which make them so important to all biological research Explores methods of isolation, characterization, activation, and maintenance of stem cells Includes models for clinical application in regenerative medicine, cancer therapy, and transplantation
