Book excerpt: Bad Jews and Other Stories is a nuanced and comic vision of life, love, and spiritual adventurism among the determinedly secular class of contemporary American Jews. Separated from the character-building hardships endured by their parents and grandparents, unable to find a faith of their own or for that matter to believe in much of anything at all, the characters of Bad Jews and Other Stories wander through the moral landscape of their lives in a loopy version of the Children of Israel?s meandering way home. Book Synopsis Don't Tell Me Your Wife Likes It by : Ronald C. Gordon
Download or read book Don't Tell Me Your Wife Likes It written by Ronald C. Gordon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, Ronald C. Gordon published Not Fade Away, a coming-of-age story set in Texas in 1959. A first novel, it was the product of many drafts, considerable professional editing, and a long, arduous attempt to find an agent and publisher. Now, in Don't Tell Me Your Wife Likes It (one particular literary agent's sole criterion for submissions to him), Mr. Gordon recounts his painful and frequently hilarious rollercoaster ride to publication. The author details not only the joys and frustrations of creating a long work of fiction, but also the many pitfalls and compromises that await the first novelist with a "marketable" manuscript. He introduces us to the How-To tribe of Literary Wannabeeland, the horde of self-described experts who claim to know all the rules for writing saleable fiction and who, for a price (financial and otherwise), will share the secret to success with their even more numerous prey. He also explores the particular problems that await the author of literary fiction in a publishing marketplace dominated by genre fiction and a mythical target audience he designates "dumb and dumber." In doing so, the author demonstrates a profound understanding of literary history, the craft of writing, and the role of autobiography in creating fiction. Above all, he convinces us that a good writer is first of all a good reader. Part memoir, part literary analysis, and a thoroughly cautionary tale, Don't Tell Me Your Wife Likes It offers an entertaining and illuminating examination of what it means to be a unknown, unpublished novelist in today's highly competitive literary marketplace.

Every person is wired for love differently—with different habits, needs, and reactions to conflict. The good news is that most people’s minds work in predictable ways and respond well to security, attachment, and routines, making it possible to neurologically prime the brain for greater love and connection and fewer conflicts. This go-to guide will show you how. Drawn from neuroscience, attachment theory, and emotion regulation, this highly anticipated second edition of Wired for Love presents cutting-edge research on how and why love lasts, and offers ten guiding principles that can improve any relationship. This fully revised and updated edition also includes new guidance on how to manage disagreements, as well as new exercises to help you create a sense of safety and security, establish healthy conflict ground rules, and deal with the threat of the third—any outside source which threatens the harmony in your relationship, including in-laws, alcohol, children, and affairs. You’ll find proven-effective strategies to help you strengthen your relationship by: Creating and maintaining a safe “couple bubble” Using morning and evening routines to stay connected Learning how to see your partner’s point of view Meeting each other halfway in a fight Becoming the expert on what makes your partner feel loved By using simple gestures and words, you’ll learn to put out emotional fires and help your partner feel appreciated and loved. While there’s no doubt that love is an inexact science, if you understand how you and your partner are wired differently, you can overcome your differences, and create a lasting intimate connection.
Book Synopsis To Forgive Divine by : George McDowell
Download or read book To Forgive Divine written by George McDowell and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sins come in all sizes and have unseen consequences. Death is no escape of God's requirement to forgive as Roger Dale, Thomas Winslow, and Donna Morris soon learn. Roger Dale lived the prototypical Southern Baptist lifestyle. He had the perfect wife, the perfect job, two wonderful children, remembered to go to Church on Sundays, and sinned at will with the certain knowledge that Heaven was his reward. Thomas Winslow was a hardworking trucker that never got a break in life. Two failed marriages and dead end jobs made him bitter toward the world. Donna Morris married the wrong man, but made the best of it. She lived her entire life trying to atone for a teenage mistake. When they met their final fates much too young, they awoke in a strange world where they faced every person they ever sinned against, relived each sin in excruciating detail, and sought forgiveness before facing their own final judgment. Only then did they realize the pervasiveness of sin and the true meaning of forgiveness.

Book excerpt: “You want me to fake date the star?” Becket loathes the potboiler legal drama he stars in, Nothing But The Truth, but the money is too good to pass up. Thanks to a back-stabbing director, he’s known in the tabloids as being a cutthroat diva on set as well as off of it. What he wants most is to break into serious films, but the likelihood of that happening is slim to none with his reputation for being difficult. Out of the blue he’s offered the role of a lifetime, but there’s a catch. The closeted actor has to fake date his younger co-star, or no deal. Hugo Zepeda, a child star now struggling to break into adult roles, is a clumsy mess... or at least that’s what his famous co-star Becket Grant believes. He’s from a show-biz family, and underneath his teen star good looks he’s a seriously talented actor. He also drops things, runs into walls, and makes a fool of himself on a regular basis. When a tabloid is tipped off that he’s dating Becket, he’s furious, because it’s not true. But, would it be so bad if they were? The Big One is the first novel in the Hollywood Hearts series. It’s a celebrity gay romance between two actors who are total opposites, but thanks to money and fame are thrust together. Can our actors overcome their egos and an age-gap to find their happy ever after? The Big One is a perfect fit for fans of Felice Stevens, Lauren Blakely, Andrew Gray, and Sarina Bowen. Throw in a dash of David Sedaris's comedic prose and you will fall in love with this romantic comedy!

Book Synopsis Analysing the Israel Effect in Canada by : Peter Eglin
Download or read book Analysing the Israel Effect in Canada written by Peter Eglin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the life of a Palestinian worth to intellectuals in Canadian universities and news media? Analyzing the Israel Effect documents and analyzes the discursive and organizational methods by which public criticism of Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians is silenced in Canada, as experienced through ten episodes in the life of the author over a thirty-year period from 1990-2020 in interaction with his university and local and national Canadian news media. As a sociological work the book is a critical autoethnography. But it is also an atrocity tale, a horror story of institutional self-censorship amounting to the abrogation of intellectual responsibility by those specifically charged with upholding it. In the end, the book is a crossover between academic treatise and journalistic exposé, “a historical narrative written by an academic from the standpoint of a political participant-observer” (Rajan Philips). The Israel Effect itself is analyzed as a three-tier propaganda industry. Hasbara is produced in Israel (Tier 1), disseminated to Israel Lobby groups around the world (Tier 2) and independently re-produced, actively and passively, by the “intellectual” institutions – universities and news media (Tier 3). This book is about the non-Jewish, non-Zionist institutions of Tier 3, the onlookers to war crimes, ethnic cleansing and, arguably, genocide, as in Gaza in October-November 2023. This work stands as a compelling testament to the importance of preserving freedom of expression, and the vital role intellectuals play in challenging injustice and promoting transparency. It is ideal for scholars, activists, and anyone seeking to understand the complexities of political activism and the power dynamics behind public discourse.

Fair Play Savannah Morrison is the new athletic trainer for the Moncton Ice Cats. It’s a good thing she’s got plenty of knowledge and grit, because as the only female trainer in the league, she has to work twice as hard to win the players’ respect. The last thing on earth she would do is date one of them. Garrick LeBlanc isn’t ready to hang up his skates, particularly since he hasn’t figured out what the hell he’s planning to do next. He needs the new trainer to keep him fit to play, and she’s got the skills to do it. Too bad he lost his mind and hit on her the day they met. Now she hates his guts and he’s made an art of ignoring her. When the team is put up for sale, Garrick and Savannah have to work together to save their team, discovering that Garrick isn’t just a hockey player, Savannah isn’t only passionate about her work, and just maybe they’ve got more in common than they thought. Two Man Advantage Rhian Savage is working his way up the ranks of professional hockey, with the dream of making it to the NHL getting closer every day. He’s doing it alone—no family, no friends—and that’s the way he likes it. Then he arrives in New Brunswick, and meets the Moncton Ice Cats. Suddenly, he’s got friends—and even something that might be an honest-to-god crush. Garrick LeBlanc is counting the days until his last season with the Ice Cats is over and he can move to Boston. When his girlfriend suggests he find man to take to bed—and tell her all about it—Garrick laughs it off. But damned if his friend Rhian doesn’t suddenly take on the starring role in his fantasies. Good thing Rhian is way too young—and straight—for what Garrick has in mind. Rhian takes a chance when Garrick’s increasingly confusing signals start making sense, and soon discovers he’s bitten off more than he can chew. Sex with strangers is simple. Sex with his best friend? Complicated. End Game Garrick LeBlanc never intended to fall in love with two people, but he has, and now he has to figure out what to do about it. He wants to make them happy, but is afraid he’s doing just the opposite. To make matters worse, he’s trapped in New Brunswick until the end of the hockey season, while his lovers are both in Boston. Savannah Morrison has no one but herself to blame for practically shoving Garrick into the arms of another man. She loves Garrick with all her heart, but how the hell is she going to share him with Rhian? Rhian Savage used to have such a simple life. Now he’s in love, his dreams of making the NHL are coming true, and he keeps spotting a strangely familiar face in the crowds. To top it all off, he has to see Savannah every day. He knows she’s Garrick’s real future, but he doesn’t have the balls to do the right thing for all of them and break it off with Garrick—until his life goes sideways. As usual. Now Rhian is alone, Garrick is heartbroken, and Savannah—the one person Rhian figured would celebrate his departure—is beating down his door. What the hell is up with that? A Merry Little (Hat Trick) Christmas Something is bothering Rhian, and his friends and family want to know what that is. Garrick and Savannah are trying to give him some space to come to them about it. His teammates are convinced that nights out and beautiful women making eyes at him will make it better. And his grandfather and sister just want him to know that he is loved. Rhian Savage does know he’s loved. He just wishes everyone else knew it, too.

Download or read book Georges Bataille written by Michel Surya and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges Bataille was a philosopher, writer, librarian, pornographer and a founder of the influential journals Critique and Acphale. He has had an enormous impact on contemporary thought, influencing such writers as Barthes, Baudrillard, Derrida, Foucault and Sontag. Many of his books, including the notorious Story of the Eye and the fascinating The Accursed Share, are modern classics. In this acclaimed intellectual biography, Michel Surya gives a detailed and insightful account of Bataille's work against the backdrop of his life - his troubled childhood, his difficult relationship with Andr Breton and the surrealists and his curious position as a thinker of excess, 'potlatch', sexual extremes and religious sacrifice, one who nonetheless remains at the heart of twentieth century French thought-all of it drawn here in rich and allusive prose. While exploring the source of the violent eroticism that laces Bataille's novels, the book is also an acute guide to the development of Bataille's philosophical thought. Enriched by testimonies from Bataille's closest acquaintances and revealing the context in which he worked, Surya sheds light on a figure Foucault described as 'one of the most important writers of the century'.
