This book was released on 1977 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The J-integral has significant path dependence immediately adjacent to a blunted crack tip under small-scale yielding conditions in an elastic-plastic material subject to mode I loads and plane-strain conditions. Since the J-integral, evaluated on a contour remote from the crack tip, can be used as the one fracture-mechanics parameter required to represent the intensity of the load when small-scale yielding conditions exist, J retains its role as a parameter characterizing the crack-tip stress fields, at least for materials modelled by the von Mises flow theory. Some results obtained using both the finite-element method and the slip-line theory are suggestive of a situation in which an outer field parameterized by a path-independent value of J controls the deformation in an inner or crack-tip field in which J is path dependent. The outer field is basically the solution to the crack problem when large deformation effects involved in the blunting are ignored. Thus, the conventional small-strain approaches in which the crack-tip deformation is represented by a singularity have been successful in characterizing such features as the crack-tip opening displacement in terms of a value of the J-integral on a remote contour. An interesting deduction concerns a nonlinear elastic material with characteristics in monotonic stressing similar to an elastic-plastic material. Since J is path independent everywhere in such a material, the stress and strain fields near the crack tip in such a material must differ greatly from those arising in the elastic-plastic materials studied so far. This result is of significance because it is believed that such nonlinear elastic constitutive laws can represent the limited strain-path independence suggested by models for plastic flow of polycrystalline aggregates based on crystalline slip within grains.

Book excerpt: This book is based on 40 years of research and teaching in the fields of fracture mechanics and plasticity. It will bring students and engineers from various disciplines up to date on key concepts that have become increasingly important in the design of safety-relevant engineering structures in general and in modern lightweight structures in the transportation industry in particular. Primarily intended for graduate students in the engineering sciences and practicing structural engineers, it employs a multidisciplinary approach that comprises theoretical concepts, numerical methods, and experimental techniques. In addition, it includes a wealth of analytical and numerical examples, used to illustrate the applications of the concepts discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this major reference work is to provide a first point of entry to the literature for the researchers in any field relating to structural integrity in the form of a definitive research/reference tool which links the various sub-disciplines that comprise the whole of structural integrity. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between mechanics and materials and structural integrity applications. Because of the interdisciplinary and applied nature of the work, it will be of interest to mechanical engineers and materials scientists from both academic and industrial backgrounds including bioengineering, interface engineering and nanotechnology. The scope of this work encompasses, but is not restricted to: fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, materials, dynamics, environmental degradation, numerical methods, failure mechanisms and damage mechanics, interfacial fracture and nano-technology, structural analysis, surface behaviour and heart valves. The structures under consideration include: pressure vessels and piping, off-shore structures, gas installations and pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft, railways, bridges, plates and shells, electronic circuits, interfaces, nanotechnology, artificial organs, biomaterial prostheses, cast structures, mining... and more. Case studies will form an integral part of the work.

Book excerpt: An International Conference on the Application of Fracture Mechanics to Ma terials and Structures was held at the Hotel Kolpinghaus in Freiburg, West Ger many, June 20-24, 1983. It was attended by more than 250 participants from different countries which include Austria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Democratic Republic of Germany, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, People's Republic of China, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America, USSR and Yugoslavia. Conference Co-Chairmen were Professor G. C. Sih, Lehigh University, Bethle hem, Pennsylvania, U. S. A. , Dr. E. Sommer, Fraunhofer-Institut fur Werkstoff mechanik, Freiburg, FRG and Professor W. Dahl, Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule, Aachen, FRG. Dr. Wenrich, as the representative of the Land Baden-WUrttemberg, delivered the opening address with the remarks that International Conferences can serve the means to further enhance the technology development of a country. He empha sized that the Federal Republic of Germany is presently in need of strengthening the engineering manpower in order to keep her in a competitive position. The Conference was officially cast off with the leading plenary lectures that under lined the theme of the technical lectures for the first day. This pattern was observed for the five-day meeting. The interplay between material and design re quirements was the theme and emphasized in many of the technical presentations that amounted to approximately ninety (90) papers.

Book excerpt: In this book a systematic discussion of crack problems in elastic-plastic materials is presented. The state of the art in fracture mechanics research and assessment of cracks is documented, with the help of analytic, asymptotic methods as well as finite element computations. After a brief introduction to fracture mechanics, the two-parameter concept for stationary cracks is studied in addition to the issues in three-dimensional crack fields under coupling with strong out-of-plane effects. Cracks along interfaces and crack growth problems under mixed mode conditions are also treated. A systematic study of stress singularities for different notches is accompanied by detailed finite element computations.

Book excerpt: With its combination of practicality, readability, and rigor that is characteristic of any truly authoritative reference and text, Fracture Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications quickly established itself as the most comprehensive guide to fracture mechanics available. It has been adopted by more than 100 universities and embraced by thousands of professional engineers worldwide. Now in its third edition, the book continues to raise the bar in both scope and coverage. It encompasses theory and applications, linear and nonlinear fracture mechanics, solid mechanics, and materials science with a unified, balanced, and in-depth approach. Reflecting the many advances made in the decade since the previous edition came about, this indispensable Third Edition now includes: A new chapter on environmental cracking Expanded coverage of weight functions New material on toughness test methods New problems at the end of the book New material on the failure assessment diagram (FAD) method Expanded and updated coverage of crack closure and variable-amplitude fatigue Updated solutions manual In addition to these enhancements, Fracture Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications, Third Edition also includes detailed mathematical derivations in appendices at the end of applicable chapters; recent developments in laboratory testing, application to structures, and computational methods; coverage of micromechanisms of fracture; and more than 400 illustrations. This reference continues to be a necessity on the desk of anyone involved with fracture mechanics.
