Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems of the patellofemoral joint remain a challenge to the orthopaedic surgeon. In spite of many articles in scientific journals, an outstanding monograph, and several excellent textbook chapters, the patella is still an enigma in many respects. The etiology of patellar pain is controversial, and there is no completely satisfying explanation for its cause or its relationship to chondromalacia. Curiously, neither the widespread use of arthroscopy nor the advent of newer diagnostic tests such as CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging have cast much light. Without a better understanding of why patellar disorders occur it is not surprising that there is no consensus on how to fix them. Arthros copy has contributed little except to the patient's psyche. The currently most popular surgical treatment for recurrent dislocation of the patella was first described 50 years ago. One concrete advance, albeit a small one, is a better understanding of the role of anatomical abnormalities and patellofemoral dysplasia in patellar instabilities. It gives me great pleasure that many of the contributors are, like Dr.

Book excerpt: Practical and user-friendly, this book is a simple and straightforward clinical guide to understanding the common problems and pathologies seen in the patellofemoral joint, clearly outlining the most prevalent problems encountered and highlighting the latest surgical techniques. Divided into two major sections on patellofemoral pain and instability, it discusses etiology, making the correct diagnosis, and how to manage these problems in both adults as well as in the skeletally immature, using outcomes-based approaches for each condition. Part I covers topics such as anterior knee pain, malalignment and overload syndromes, and arthritis, while part II describes conditions such as acute patellar dislocation, recurrent instability and how to avoid complications. Both parts also include chapters on imaging strategies for the knee. Providing the most current research on these topics in a field that is rapidly changing and evolving, and explaining the treatments and their support in the current literature, Patellofemoral Pain and Instability is an up-to-date, straightforward resource for orthopedic surgeons and residents, sports medicine specialists, and any clinical professional treating conditions of the knee.

Book excerpt: Despite numerous studies, a lack of consensus still exists over many aspects of patellofemoral pain, instability, and arthritis. This book adopts an evidence-based approach to assess each of these topics in depth. The book reviews general features of clinical examination and global evaluation techniques including the use of different imaging methods, e.g. x-rays, CT, MRI, stress x-rays, and bone scan. Various conservative and surgical treatment approaches for each of the three presentations – pain, instability, and arthritis – are then explained and assessed. Postoperative management and options in the event of failed surgery are also evaluated. Throughout, careful attention is paid to the literature in an attempt to establish the level of evidence for the efficacy of each imaging and treatment method. It is hoped that this book will serve as an informative guide for the practitioner when confronted with disorders of the patellofemoral joint.

Book excerpt: Among all the extensor mechanism pathologies, lateral patellar instability is of great interest not only for the knee specialist, but also for the general orthopedic surgeon and trainee. The procedure that is most frequently performed to treat lateral patellar instability is the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction. The reason for this great interest in this procedure is obvious. Medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction is the most frequently performed procedure in the extensor mechanism. It also is the most predictable and has the best clinical results of all the procedures in the extensor mechanism. In this handbook we analyse the different reconstruction techniques, step by step, for the MPFL reconstruction, as well as other techniques less frequently used in the patient with lateral patellofemoral instability. We also analyse the treatment of medial patellofemoral instability. It is a very practical book, aimed at the general orthopedic surgeon and also the ones specialized in the knee.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patellofemoral complaints are a major problem for all those working in sports medicine and orthopaedics. The correct diagnosis at an early stage is essential if subsequent treatment is to be successful and secondary complications are to be avoided. Written by an internationally known team of experts this book looks at the various diagnostic techniques currently available, cites examples of unsuccessful treatments and proposes the most appropriate ones on the proven basis of the latest research. The core of the book is the 20 case studies ranging from simple non-operative treatment to multi-operated patients with salvage procedures. The underlying theme of the book is that treatment of patellofemoral problems must, in the first instance, be somewhat conservative. Surgical interventions should be performed in a response to a clear underlying pathology and only after non-operative treatment has failed. Patellofemoral Disorders is enhanced by the inclusion of some superb specially drawn illustrations and numerous colour photographs in the case studies section.

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive and thorough compilation of work from across the world that documents the state of the art in assessment and management of the patellofemoral joint. While a wide range of surgical techniques for different pathologies are described, attention is also devoted to conservative treatment and approaches involving mesenchymal stem cells, autologous chondrocyte implantation, platelet-rich plasma, and pulsed electromagnetic fields. Anatomy, clinical examination, and methods of evaluation are discussed, and individual chapters address important miscellaneous topics, including rehabilitation, complications of surgery, injuries in specific patient populations, and scoring systems. Though patellofemoral joint pathology is a frequent clinical problem, its management remains challenging for the orthopaedic surgeon. The editors believe that this book, published in cooperation with ISAKOS, will assist in improving understanding, diagnosis, and treatment for future patients.
