Book excerpt: Pat Passlof (1928-2011) was a distinguished painter in the abstract expressionist tradition, who studied with Willem de Kooning and was active in New York's downtown art community from the 1950s to her death. Passlof was also a teacher. Passionate and opinionated, she taught at Richmond College, CUNY, Staten Island from 1972 to 1983, and at the College of Staten Island from 1983 until the year before her death in 2011. Passlof was a brilliant writer, and continued her teachings in letters to students. David Jacobsen Loncle was one of Passlof's students, and a close friend. In the course of gathering material for a book on Passlof, he assembled a group of her letters to young painters commenting on their practice, which the Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation has now published as a small clothbound book. The letters are accompanied by a group of nine drawings Passlof made in the late 1940s and early '50s.

Book excerpt: ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES 10 BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR • “A darkly incantatory tragicomedy of love and betrayal ... Beautifully paced, emotionally wise.” —The Boston Globe In the dark waiting room of the ferry terminal in the sketchy Spanish port of Algeciras, two aging Irishmen—Maurice Hearne and Charlie Redmond, longtime partners in the lucrative and dangerous enterprise of smuggling drugs—sit at night, none too patiently. The pair are trying to locate Maurice’s estranged daughter, Dilly, whom they’ve heard is either arriving on a boat coming from Tangier or departing on one heading there. This nocturnal vigil will initiate an extraordinary journey back in time to excavate their shared history of violence, romance, mutual betrayals, and serial exiles. Rendered with the dark humor and the hardboiled Hibernian lyricism that have made Kevin Barry one of the most striking and admired fiction writers at work today, Night Boat to Tangier is a superbly melancholic melody of a novel, full of beautiful phrases and terrible men.

Book excerpt: This catalog is published for a retrospective exhibition of paintings by Milton Resnick (1917-2004), the inaugural exhibition at the Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation exhibition space, located in Resnick's former studio building at 87 Eldridge Street in Manhattan. It is the first retrospective of his work to be held in New York City, where he made his home. The catalog doubles as a monograph on Resnick's work, documenting his over-50-year career, beginning as a member of the first generation of abstract expressionist painters in the late 1930s, and developing into a painter of thickly textured, seemingly monochromatic paintings of powerful emotional force. The exhibition is drawn largely from the Foundation's holdings, but also includes major loans from museum and private collections. The book also reproduces a half-dozen major works not included in the exhibition.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of the work of this most influential Florentine artist and teacher Andrea del Verrocchio (c. 1435–1488) was one of the most versatile and inventive artists of the Italian Renaissance. He created art across media, from his spectacular sculptures and paintings to his work in goldsmithing, architecture, and engineering. His expressive, confident drawings provide a key point of contact between sculpture and painting. He led a vibrant workshop where he taught young artists who later became some of the greatest painters of the period, including Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Lorenzo di Credi, and Domenico Ghirlandaio. This beautifully illustrated book presents a comprehensive survey of Verrocchio's art, spanning his entire career and featuring some fifty sculptures, paintings, and drawings, in addition to works he created with his students. Through incisive scholarly essays, in-depth catalog entries, and breathtaking illustrations, this volume draws on the latest research in art history to show why Verrocchio was one of the most innovative and influential of all Florentine artists. Published in association with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC

Book excerpt: Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey is one of the most influential contemporary artists working today. Since he came to prominence in the late 1990s, Leckey's practice has addressed the radical effect of technology on popular culture and has powerfully articulated the transition from analogue to digital culture. His work is often concerned with under-represented or overlooked aspects of British culture and explores ideas about both collective and personal history. For example, the film Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore 1999 uses sampled footage to trace dance subcultures in British nightclubs from the 1970s to the 1990s. Dream English Kid, 1964-1999 AD 2015 focuses on key episodes in his own life, constructed from "found memories" sourced primarily from the internet. This book, accompanying Leckey's first major show at Tate, combines newly commissioned writing with artist's scripts for performances, and illustrates his previous work as well as the intriguing sources of inspiration for this powerful, immersive new exhibition.

Book excerpt: An authoritative and comprehensive survey of the life and work of the visionary and influential painter Philip Guston. Driven and consumed by art, Philip Guston painted and drew compulsively. This book takes the reader from his early social realist murals and easel paintings of the 1930s and 1940s, to the Abstract Expressionist works of the 1950s and early 1960s, and finally to the powerful new language of figurative painting, which he developed in the late 1960s and 1970s. Drawing on more than thirty years of his own research, the critic and curator, Robert Storr, maps Guston's entire career in one definitive volume, providing a subtantial, accessible, and revealing analysis of his work. With more than 800 images, the book illustrates Guston's key works and includes many unpublished paintings and drawings. An extensive chronology, illustrated with photographs, letters, articles, publications, and other ephemera drawn from the artist's archives and other sources, contextualizes Guston's life and provides in-depth coverage of his life at home, his work in the studio, his relationship with fellow artists and his many exhibitions. Guston was able to speak about art with unrivalled passion and fluency. In celebration of this, the book features Guston's own thoughts on his drawings and his great heroes of the Italian Renaissance.

Book excerpt: "A dauntingly ambitious, obsessively researched" (Los Angeles Times) global history of music that reveals how songs have shifted societies and sparked revolutions. Histories of music overwhelmingly suppress stories of the outsiders and rebels who created musical revolutions and instead celebrate the mainstream assimilators who borrowed innovations, diluted their impact, and disguised their sources. In Music: A Subversive History, Ted Gioia reclaims the story of music for the riffraff, insurgents, and provocateurs. Gioia tells a four-thousand-year history of music as a global source of power, change, and upheaval. He shows how outcasts, immigrants, slaves, and others at the margins of society have repeatedly served as trailblazers of musical expression, reinventing our most cherished songs from ancient times all the way to the jazz, reggae, and hip-hop sounds of the current day. Music: A Subversive History is essential reading for anyone interested in the meaning of music, from Sappho to the Sex Pistols to Spotify.
