Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, University for Development studies, language: English, abstract: Stereotypes and prejudices of Fulani pastoralists go beyond just discourses of examining the stereotypes and prejudices vis-à-vis the Fulani in Ghana, particularly the pastoral Fulani. This paper argues that these attitudes towards Fulani pastoralists in Ghana have become an important part of national and local community policies and discourses to help to exclude the pastoralists and to structure pastoralist community-relations. Over the years, there have been a significant coverage of issues relating to the Fulanis, however, most of that coverage has to do with the Fulani herdsmen. Part of it is largely due to the state policy of expulsion that poses the tendency of stereotypes, marginalization, and the practice of social exclusion. The relationship between the state and the Fulani pastoralists in Ghana, just like other countries in the West African sub-region is strained. National and local government officials generally consider nomadic pastoralism and the pastoral lifestyle to be an archaic form of production that is outdated.
Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of South–South Migration and Inequality by : Heaven Crawley
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of South–South Migration and Inequality written by Heaven Crawley and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-27 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access handbook examines the phenomenon of South-South migration and its relationship to inequality in the Global South, where at least a third of all international migration takes place. Drawing on contributions from nearly 70 leading migration scholars, mainly from the Global South, the handbook challenges dominant conceptualisations of migration, offering new perspectives and insights that can inform theoretical and policy understandings and unlock migration’s development potential. The handbook is divided into four parts, each highlighting often overlooked mobility patterns within and between regions of the Global South, as well as the inequalities faced by those who move. Key cross-cutting themes include gender, race, poverty and income inequality, migration decision making, intermediaries, remittances, technology, climate change, food security and migration governance. The handbook is an indispensable resource on South-South migration and inequality for academics, researchers, postgraduates and development practitioners.
Book Synopsis Ecology and Natural Resource Development in the Western Highlands of Cameroon. Issues in Natural Resource Management by : Cornelius Mbifung Lambi
Download or read book Ecology and Natural Resource Development in the Western Highlands of Cameroon. Issues in Natural Resource Management written by Cornelius Mbifung Lambi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The densely populated Bamenda Highlands of Cameroon remains one of the regions with the greatest land degradation problems in the country. Factors responsible for this include climate change, the hilly nature or topographic layout of the land, and human interference through overgrazing, destructive agricultural practices and the impact of deforestation. This detailed study of resource management and its ecological challenges in the Bamenda Highlands, stresses an important link between falling food output and soil deterioration. While most areas in this predominantly agricultural region enjoy food abundance, the inhabitants of high-density infertile, rugged mountainous areas are forced to resort to double cropping and intensified land exploitation that leave little room for soil regeneration. The population problem in relation to land degradation is infinitely more complicated than the region's sheer ability to produce enough food supply. The authors make a strong case for a delicate balance between human agency and environmental protection in this highly populated and physically challenging region where land is a precious resource and land conflicts are common.
Book Synopsis Exile/Flight/Persecution by : Maria Pohn-Lauggas
Download or read book Exile/Flight/Persecution written by Maria Pohn-Lauggas and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2023 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiences, processes and constellations of exile, flight, and persecution have deeply shaped global history and are still widespread aspects of human existence today. People are persecuted, incarcerated, tortured or deported on the basis of their political beliefs, gender, ethnic or ethno-national belonging, religious affiliation, and other socio-political categories. People flee or are displaced in the context of collective violence such as wars, rebellions, coups, environmental disasters or armed conflicts. After migrating, but not exclusively in this context, people find themselves suddenly isolated, cut off from their networks of belonging, their biographical projects and their collective histories. The articles in this volume are concerned with the challenges of navigating through multiple paradoxes and contradictions when it comes to grasping these phenomena sociologically, on the levels of self-reflection, theorizing, and especially doing empirical research.

Book Synopsis Transborder Pastoral Nomadism and Human Security in Africa by : Richard Olaniyan
Download or read book Transborder Pastoral Nomadism and Human Security in Africa written by Richard Olaniyan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nexus between political borders, pastoral nomadism, and human security in Africa. It uses a host of applied interdisciplinary insights to analyse social, political, and cultural processes, circumstances, and consequences to showcase the human security crisis in the context of climate change, inter-group relations, leadership strategies, institutions, and governance within the region. With a special focus on West Africa and Nigeria, the volume discusses crucial themes that highlight the role of borders in the security architecture of the region which include, • Political economy of herdsmen-farmers’ conflicts in West Africa; • The scarcity-migration perspective of the Sahel region; • Population pressure, urbanization, and nomadic pastoral violence in West Africa; • Human trafficking and kidnapping for ransom in Nigeria; • Drivers of ‘labour’ migration of Fulani herders to Ghana, and other topics. A key contribution to a pressing issue, this volume will be of interest to scholars and students of history, political science, anthropology, geography, international relations, literature, environmental science, and peace and conflict studies.

Download or read book Africana written by Anthony Appiah and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 3951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninety years after W.E.B. Du Bois first articulated the need for "the equivalent of a black Encyclopedia Britannica," Kwame Anthony Appiah and Henry Louis Gates Jr., realized his vision by publishing Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience in 1999. This new, greatly expanded edition of the original work broadens the foundation provided by Africana. Including more than one million new words, Africana has been completely updated and revised. New entries on African kingdoms have been added, bibliographies now accompany most articles, and the encyclopedia's coverage of the African diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean has been expanded, transforming the set into the most authoritative research and scholarly reference set on the African experience ever created. More than 4,000 articles cover prominent individuals, events, trends, places, political movements, art forms, business and trade, religion, ethnic groups, organizations and countries on both sides of the Atlantic. African American history and culture in the present-day United States receive a strong emphasis, but African American history and culture throughout the rest of the Americas and their origins in African itself have an equally strong presence. The articles that make up Africana cover subjects ranging from affirmative action to zydeco and span over four million years from the earlies-known hominids, to Sean "Diddy" Combs. With entries ranging from the African ethnic groups to members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Africana, Second Edition, conveys the history and scope of cultural expression of people of African descent with unprecedented depth.
