Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This essay is an attempt to show how the language of the Pastoral Epistles can be used as a key to unlock the old secret of their origin. It is not a complete Introduction to these epistles, but only a contribution towards that larger subject. On the other hand, it includes rather more than a series of linguistic studies pure and simple. In the matter before us, language is only one of several factors which are closely interconnected and refuse to be kept in separate water-tight compartments. The full significance of each is only seen in its relation to the rest." --From the preface
Book Synopsis The Pastoral Epistles by : Stanley E. Porter
Download or read book The Pastoral Epistles written by Stanley E. Porter and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading New Testament scholar Stanley Porter offers a comprehensive commentary on the Pastoral Epistles that features rigorous biblical scholarship and emphasizes Greek language and linguistics. This book breaks new ground in its interpretation of these controversial letters by focusing on the Greek text and utilizing a linguistically informed exegetical method that draws on various elements in contemporary language study. Porter pays attention to the overall argument of the Pastoral Epistles while also analyzing word meanings and grammatical structures to tease out the textual meaning. Porter addresses major exegetical issues that arise in numerous highly disputed passages and--while attentive to the history of scholarship on First Timothy, Second Timothy, and Titus--often takes untraditional or innovative positions to blaze a new path forward rather than adopt settled answers. This commentary will appeal to professors, students, and scholars of the New Testament.

Book Synopsis Pauline Language and the Pastoral Epistles by : Jermo van Nes
Download or read book Pauline Language and the Pastoral Epistles written by Jermo van Nes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pauline Language and the Pastoral Epistles Jermo van Nes questions the common assumption in New Testament scholarship that language variation is necessarily due to author variation. By using the so-called Pastoral Epistles (PE) as a test-case, Van Nes demonstrates by means of statistical linguistics that only one out of five of their major lexical and syntactic peculiarities differs significantly from other Pauline writings. Most of the PE’s linguistic peculiarities are shown to differ considerably in the Corpus Paulinum, but modern studies in classics and linguistics suggest that factors other than author variation account equally if not better for this variation. Since all of these explanatory factors are compatible with current authorship hypotheses of the PE, Van Nes suggests to no longer use language as a criterion in debates about their authenticity.

Book Synopsis Victorious Living: Finding Satisfying Victory in God by : Carl Shank

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am more and more convinced that many well-intentioned Christians live far below their promises from God or presume upon God for too much of the "good life," whatever that may mean. We want to live on the "mountain top" of God's favor, but too often find ourselves in the valley of trouble and outright despair. We have to learn how to live victoriously in the valleys of life with God. I believe this is not only possible, but should be the Christian "normal" for those wishing to live Christ-centered lives.
