Book excerpt: Although precise definitions have not been agreed on, historical cinema tends to cut across existing genre categories and establishes an intimidatingly large group of films. In recent years, a lively body of work has developed around historical cinema, much of it proposing valuable new ways to consider the relationship between cinematic and historical representation. However, only a small proportion of this writing has paid attention to the issue of genre. In order to counter this omission, this book combines a critical analysis of the Hollywood historical film with an examination of its generic dimensions and a history of its development since the silent period. Historical Film: A Critical Introduction is concerned not simply with the formal properties of the films at hand, but also the ways in which they have been promoted, interpreted and discussed in relation to their engagement with the past.

Book excerpt: Jeff Shaara has enthralled readers with his New York Times bestselling novels set during the Civil War and the American Revolution. Now the acclaimed author turns to World War I, bringing to life the sweeping, emotional story of the war that devastated a generation and established America as a world power. Spring 1916: the horror of a stalemate on Europe’s western front. France and Great Britain are on one side of the barbed wire, a fierce German army is on the other. Shaara opens the window onto the otherworldly tableau of trench warfare as seen through the eyes of a typical British soldier who experiences the bizarre and the horrible–a “Tommy” whose innocent youth is cast into the hell of a terrifying war. In the skies, meanwhile, technology has provided a devastating new tool, the aeroplane, and with it a different kind of hero emerges–the flying ace. Soaring high above the chaos on the ground, these solitary knights duel in the splendor and terror of the skies, their courage and steel tested with every flight. As the conflict stretches into its third year, a neutral America is goaded into war, its reluctant president, Woodrow Wilson, finally accepting the repeated challenges to his stance of nonalignment. Yet the Americans are woefully unprepared and ill equipped to enter a war that has become worldwide in scope. The responsibility is placed on the shoulders of General John “Blackjack” Pershing, and by mid-1917 the first wave of the American Expeditionary Force arrives in Europe. Encouraged by the bold spirit and strength of the untested Americans, the world waits to see if the tide of war can finally be turned. From Blackjack Pershing to the Marine in the trenches, from the Red Baron to the American pilots of the Lafayette Escadrille, To the Last Man is written with the moving vividness and accuracy that characterizes all of Shaara’s work. This spellbinding new novel carries readers–the way only Shaara can–to the heart of one of the greatest conflicts in human history, and puts them face-to-face with the characters who made a lasting impact on the world.

Book excerpt: University Hall, known as Old Fraser, was built by John Fraser, second chancellor of the University of Kansas, and by the citizens of Lawrence, who raised a bond issue to fund it. It was opened in 1872. Up-to-date in every way, it was heated with steam and lighted with gas, and every room was supplied with water. And although electric lights did not appear at KU until 1888, the building featured electrically powered clocks in each room. In addition, mechanically inclined students would also be able to work with steam-driven engines, lathes and other machinery. Being 300 feet long, 100 feet wide, and rising four stories, it was spacious enough to house the entire University: departmental and administrative offices, laboratories, classrooms, the library, a student reading room, even a large, second-floor auditorium. Old Fraser was the center of campus life, even as the university expanded into and through the twentieth century; the site of memory for many alumni. After it was razed in 1965 a number of its architectural features were incorporated into the Union and Alumni Center. Published by the Historic Mount Oread Fund.

Book excerpt: Through their 'Middle Kingdom' mindset and great patience, the Chinese used the French and surrogate terrorists to marginalize America and the West. They quickly advanced in technology and essentially own the World's resources in space from the Space Station, surveillance satellites, to fleets of Space Shuttle craft. With the goal of completing its colonization of the Moon, something unusual happens at an obscure station. It involves a discovery where the Chinese feel they can correctly deal with its implications and do so as the primary intercessor for mankind. Although their intentions may be of the highest moral quality, they are deadly wrong and it leads to a situation where all dreams for mankind may disasterously end

Book excerpt: "Across more than six generations--beginning before the Revolutionary War--the Breckinridge family has produced a series of notable social and political leaders. These often controversial men and women include a presidential candidate, a U.S. vice president, cabinet members, generals, women's rights advocates, congressmen, editors, reformers, authors, and church leaders. Though they enjoyed many successes, the Breckinridges--not unlike other Americans--faced hardship and war, contended with issues of race, lived through difficult family situations (including a sex scandal), and encountered personal and political failure"--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the distinctive contribution that Joseph Maguire has made to process sociology and the study of sport. Maguire’s work over the past three decades highlights how process sociology has a unique perspective on the relationship between sport, culture and society, and to the body, globalisation and civilisational analysis. Reflecting on this body of work and the use of process sociology, Maguire captures the research dynamic of ‘walking the line' between involvement and detachment, theory and observation, and engagement and critique. The book is structured around four broad sections: Theory, Sport and Society; The Meaning of Sport, Body and Society; Case Studies in Sport and Process Sociology; Globalisation, Sport and Civilisational Analysis. Providing an introduction to, and key examples of, a process sociology approach to the study of sport, the body, civilising processes and globalisation, this book will appeal to undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in sport studies / sports science degrees, sociology, cultural studies and to those studying migration, globalisation and cross cultural civilisation relations. This book was previously published as a Special Issue of Sport in Society.

Book excerpt: "The Adventures of Jimmie Dale" – Jimmie Dale is a wealthy playboy by day, but at night he puts on a costume and becomes The Gray Seal, who enters businesses or homes and cracks safes, always leaving a diamond shaped, gray paper "seal" behind to mark his conquest, but never taking anything and just doing it for "the sheer deviltry of it". But he gets caught by a mysterious woman he calls The Tocsin, and she blackmails him to help her in the war with certain crime organizations. "The Further Adventures of Jimmie Dale" – Jimmie Dale wanted to settle with the love of his life, but when she disappears, he is pulled back into the New York's underworld of crooks and crime. "Jimmie Dale and the Phantom Clue" – Jimmie Dale is back in the underworld of New York, and he is destined to find the criminal known as the Phantom, in order to save the woman he loves. "Jimmie Dale and Blue Envelope Murder" – Jimmie Dale tries to protect his friend who received a threat in the form of a mysterious blue envelope, but when the friend is found dead, Jimmie is accused of the murder. To clear himself, Jimmie must resolve the envelope's mystery and find out who stands behind the murder, and he must do it while avoiding the police and his old enemies from the underworld. Frank Lucius Packard (1877-1942) was a Canadian novelist best known for his Jimmie Dale mystery series. The character Jimmie Dale is a wealthy playboy by day and a fearless crime fighter by night. Jimmie Dale novels brought the idea of a costume and mask for hero's secret identity, and also established the concept of a hero's secret hideout or lair.
