Book excerpt: Excerpt from Party and Patriotism, or the Degeneracy of Politics Attention, the only question worth attending to for the moment, is how they are to regain self government. Nothing stands in the way of their emancipation except party badges, long since become meaningless, superstitious sub servience to a leader who has gone over to the enemy, miserable competitions for place, and the personal jealousies which long indulgence in partisan squabbling has engendered. If the sword now hanging over this country should fall, the'disaster will be due not to Mr. Parnell or Mr. Gladstone, for both together would be powerless against a single wave of genuine patriotism, but to the wretched vices of our own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotism and Government Not adults only, but also children, pure, wise children, rejoice, according to their nationality, when they hear that the number killed and lacerated by lyddite or other shells is not seven hundred but one thousand Englishmen or Boers. And parents (i know of such cases) encourage their children in such brutality. But that is not all. Every increase in the army of one nation (and every nation being in danger seeks to increase its army for patriotic reasons) obliges its neighbours to increase their army, also from patriot ism, and this evokes a fresh increase by the first nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotism The real problem before our country is the one which vitalizes the topics discussed in Mr. Butler's speech, besides a multitude of others. The relation of present issues to the general welfare is of paramount importance at the present time. The purposes of the Constitution Of the United States are clearly defined in the six clauses of the Pre amble. One of these clauses, to quote it literally, is to establish justice. Where justice reigns, special privilege cannot ex ist. Inasmuch as special privilege does exist, to that extent is justice thwarted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of late-nineteenth-century American politics was parade and pageant. Voters crowded the polls, and their votes made a real difference on policy. In Party Games, Mark Wahlgren Summers tells the full story and admires much of the political carnival, but he adds a cautionary note about the dark recesses: vote-buying, election-rigging, blackguarding, news suppression, and violence. Summers also points out that hardball politics and third-party challenges helped make the parties more responsive. Ballyhoo did not replace government action. In order to maintain power, major parties not only rigged the system but also gave dissidents part of what they wanted. The persistence of a two-party system, Summers concludes, resulted from its adaptability, as well as its ruthlessness. Even the reform of political abuses was shaped to fit the needs of the real owners of the political system--the politicians themselves.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Progress of the American Party in Politics No apology is needed for the publication of this volume. The history it purports to give embraces an account of some of the most important events that have ever transpired in Philadelphia. These are but imperfectly understood by many of our immediate citizens; much less by those living at a distance. The rise and progress, principles and intentions, past doings and present condition of the American political party, have been most grossly misrepresented by opposing partisan presses. Great care has been taken not only to suppress the truth, but to convey false impressions to the minds of those who have had no other means of information. It seems proper that these errors should be corrected, and the facts, as they really occurred and now exist, given as wide a circulation as possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The acclaimed social psychologist challenges conventional thinking about morality, politics, and religion in a way that speaks to conservatives and liberals alike—a “landmark contribution to humanity’s understanding of itself” (The New York Times Book Review). Drawing on his twenty-five years of groundbreaking research on moral psychology, Jonathan Haidt shows how moral judgments arise not from reason but from gut feelings. He shows why liberals, conservatives, and libertarians have such different intuitions about right and wrong, and he shows why each side is actually right about many of its central concerns. In this subtle yet accessible book, Haidt gives you the key to understanding the miracle of human cooperation, as well as the curse of our eternal divisions and conflicts. If you’re ready to trade in anger for understanding, read The Righteous Mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Hecker (1811-1881) lived the first half of his life in the Grand Duchy of Baden, a small state in southern Germany. He was a major leader of a rebellion on behalf of the German republican movement in 1848, but his defeat forced him into exile in America. There he spent the second half of his life as a farmer in southern Illinois, helping to found the Republican Party and campaigning among his countrymen in local and national elections. During the Civil War he served bravely, fighting in some of the most important battles. Although much better known in Germany than in America, he founded a remarkable family in the Midwest that is still flourishing and is a major example of the melding of the European and American traditions of liberty. The work draws heavily from original sources, including letters and diaries at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection, the Missouri Historical Society, and the St. Louis Mercantile Library.
