Book excerpt: The New York Times has called the work of the Polshek Partnership a "triumph of substance over flash," and New Yorker Paul Goldberger has lauded the firm's ability to create meaningful works that demonstrate that "architecture can be an enriching force in life." This long-awaited monograph is published as the firm celebrates its fortieth anniversary. Guided by a respect for the environment, the innovative use of materials and technology, a progressive aesthetic vision, and its collaborative structure, the Polshek Partnership has produced a catalog of public worksnbsp;-- from theaters sand museums to libraries, hospitals, and schoolsnbsp;-- that collectively ennoble our civic life on a daily basis. In this handsomely produced volume, sixteen, of the partnership's most important works are examined in depth from initial conception through design, construction, and completion. These works include the celebrated Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Times Printing Plant, and the Ed Sullivan Theater adaptation for David Letterman's Late Show. The book also documents seven of the firm's most recent projects, including the Clinton Presidential Library, Scandinavia House, and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Book Synopsis When Ivory Towers Were Black by : Sharon Egretta Sutton
Download or read book When Ivory Towers Were Black written by Sharon Egretta Sutton and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This personal history chronicles the triumph and loss of a 1960s initiative to recruit minority students to Columbia University’s School of Architecture. At the intersection of US educational, architectural, and urban history, When Ivory Towers Were Black tells the story of how an unparalleled cohort of ethnic minority students overcame institutional roadblocks to earn degrees in architecture from Columbia University. Its narrative begins with a protest movement to end Columbia’s authoritarian practices, and ends with an unsettling return to the status quo. Sharon Egretta Sutton, one of the students in question, follows two university units that led the movement toward emancipatory education: the Division of Planning and the Urban Center. She illustrates both units’ struggle to open the ivory tower to ethnic minority students and to involve those students in improving Harlem’s slum conditions. Along with Sutton’s personal perspective, the story is narrated through the oral histories of twenty-four fellow students who received an Ivy League education only to find the doors closing on their careers due to Nixon-era urban disinvestment policies.

Book excerpt: Modern Schools: A Century of Design for Education is a comprehensive survey of modern K-12 schools from Frank Lloyd Wright to Morphosis an in-depth design study that explores the fundamental relationship between architecture, education, and the design of contemporary learning environments. Its focus is on the underlying design themes and characteristic features that support and enhance basic aspects of learning and, in the process, create an architectural expression that is both meaningful and lasting. The breadth of its scope includes influences of contemporary educational ideas and practices, related design concepts and strategies, and most importantly, the resulting impact of both on real environments for learning. This remarkable survey and project study the first of its kind is an essential and important sourcebook for architects, school planners, educators, and anyone else interested in contemporary school design. The body of work presented, which is international in scope, underscores the unique architectural potential of this important project type, and highlights design themes that remain fundamentally relevant for architects and designers today. Presentation material includes more than 900 contemporary and historical photographs, mostly in color, and more than 200 detailed architectural plans drawings of schools by many of the outstanding design architects of the modern era. Modern Schools: A Century of Design for Education features the work of more than 60 architects worldwide, including twentieth century masters Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, and Eliel and Eero Saarinen, as well as contemporaries such as Morphosis, Coop Himmel(b)lau, Behnisch & Partners, and Patkau Architects, among many others.
