Book excerpt: A P Balachandran has a long and impressive record of research in particle physics and quantum field theory, bringing concepts of geometry, topology and operator algebras to the analysis of physical problems, particularly in particle physics and condensed matter physics. He has also had an influential role within the physics community, not only in terms of a large number of students, research associates and collaborators, but also serving on the editorial boards of important publications, including the International Journal of Modern Physics A.This book consists of articles by students and associates of Balachandran. Most of the articles are scientific in nature, with topics ranging from noncommutative geometry, particle physics phenomenology, to condensed matter physics. Various chapters focus on new perspectives and directions resulting from Balachandran's contributions to physics, as well as some reminiscences of collaborating and working with Balachandran.

After presenting the general formalism, it delves into several examples reflecting current research interests in high-energy physics and condensed matter physics. Applications explore Chern-Simons theory, theta vacuum, the Hall effect, fluid dynamics, and elements of noncommutative geometry. The content is tailored to appeal to researchers, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in high-energy physics, particle physics, and mathematical physics. A background in differential geometry and group theory is beneficial for a comprehensive understanding of the discussions.

Book excerpt: Theory of Electrophoresis and Diffusiophoresis of Highly Charged Colloidal Particles discusses the electrophoretic and diffusiophoretic motions of various colloidal entities, such as rigid particles, liquid droplets, gas bubbles, and porous particles, focusing on the motion-deterring double-layer polarization effect pertinent to highly charged particles, with the lowly charged ones serving as the limiting cases. Boundary effects such as those from a cylindrical pore, a solid plane, or an air-water interface are analyzed as well for the electrophoretic motion of the various particles considered. Dynamic electrophoresis is also explored and treated. The contents are suitable for researchers, graduate students, or senior college students with some basic background of colloid science and transport phenomena. As there is no closed-form analytical formula in general for the situation of highly charged particles, the results are presented with extensive figures and plots as well as tables under various electrokinetic situations of interest to facilitate the possible use of interested readers. Provides a reliable quantitative prediction of highly charged particles motion with easy-to-apply charts and in-depth understanding of the underlying mechanisms Offers an extensive treatment of direct quantitative predication for non-rigid systems, such as porous particles, liquid drops, and gels, which is especially valuable in proteins and DNA research Discusses highly charged systems with a nearby boundary of practical interests, such as a pore, a solid plane, or an air-water interface, which is of vital interest in fields such as microfluidic operations and biomedical engineering Affords special attention to the polarization effect

Book excerpt: In this highly individual, and truly novel, approach to theoretical reasoning in physics, the author has provided a course that illuminates the subject from the standpoint of real physics as practised by research scientists. Professor Longair gives the basic insights, attitudes, and techniques that are the tools of the professional physicist, in a manner that conveys the intellectual excitement and beauty of the subject. The book is intended to be a supplement to more traditional courses for physics undergraduates, and the author assumes that his readers already have some knowledge of the main branches of physics. As the story unfolds, much of the core material of an undergraduate course in physics is reviewed from a more mature point of view. This is not, in fact, a substitute for existing texts. Rather it goes beyond them by improving the student's appreciation of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph aims to provide a unified, geometrical foundation of gauge theories of elementary particle physics. The underlying geometrical structure is unfolded in a coordinate-free manner via the modern mathematical notions of fibre bundles and exterior forms. Topics such as the dynamics of Yang-Mills theories, instanton solutions and topological invariants are included. By transferring these concepts to local space-time symmetries, generalizations of Einstein's theory of gravity arise in a Riemann-Cartan space with curvature and torsion. It provides the framework in which the (broken) Poincaré gauge theory, the Rainich geometrization of the Einstein-Maxwell system, and higher-dimensional, non-abelian Kaluza-Klein theories are developed. Since the discovery of the Higgs boson, concepts of spontaneous symmetry breaking in gravity have come again into focus, and, in this revised edition, these will be exposed in geometric terms. Quantizing gravity remains an open issue: formulating it as a de Sitter type gauge theory in the spirit of Yang-Mills, some new progress in its topological form is presented. After symmetry breaking, Einstein’s standard general relativity with cosmological constant emerges as a classical background. The geometrical structure of BRST quantization with non-propagating topological ghosts is developed in some detail.

Book excerpt: I am very happy to accept the translators' invitation to write a few lines of introduction to this book. Of course, there is little need to explain the author. Pauli's first famous work, his article on the theory of relativity in the Encyklopädie der Mathematischen Wissenschaften was written at the age of twenty. He afterwards took part in the development of atomic physics from the still essentially classical picture of Bohr's early work to the true quantum mechanics. Thereafter, some of his work concerned the treatment of problems in the framework of the new theory, especially his paper on the hydrogen atom following the matrix method without recourse to Schrodinger's analytic form of the theory. His greatest achievement, the exclusion principle, generally known today under his own name as the Pauli principle, that governs the quantum theory of all problems including more than one electron, preceded the basic work of Heisenberg and Schrodinger, and brought him the Nobel prize. It includes the mathematical treatment of the spin by means of the now so well known Pauli matrices. In 1929, in a paper with Heisenberg, he laid the foundation of quantum electrodynamics and, in doing so, to the whole theory of quantized wave fields which was to become the via regia of access to elementary particle physics, since here for the first time processes of generation and annihilation of particles could be described for the case of the photons.

Book excerpt: The field of marketing and management has undergone immense changes over the past decade. These dynamic changes are driving an increasing need for data analysis using quantitative modelling. Problem solving using the quantitative approach and other models has always been a hot topic in the fields of marketing and management. Quantitative modelling seems admirably suited to help managers in their strategic decision making on operations management issues. In social sciences, quantitative research refers to the systematic empirical investigation of social phenomena via statistical, mathematical or computational techniques. The first edition of 'Quantitative Modelling in Marketing and Management' focused on the description and applications of many quantitative modelling approaches applied to marketing and management. The topics ranged from fuzzy logic and logical discriminant models to growth models and k-clique models. The second edition follows the thread of the first one by covering a myriad of techniques and applications in the areas of statistical, computer, mathematical as well as other novel nomothetic methods. It greatly reinforces the areas of computer, mathematical and other modeling tools that are designed to bring a level of awareness and knowledge among academics and researchers in marketing and management, so that there is an increase in the application of these new approaches that will be embedded in future scholarly output.
