Book excerpt: This text presents the current knowledge of environmental colloids and includes reviews of the current understanding of structure, role and behaviour of environmental colloids and particles, whilst focussing directly on aquatic systems and soils. In addition, there is substantial critical assessment of the techniques employed for the sampling, size fractionation and characterisation of colloids and particles. Chemical, physical and biological processes and interactions involving colloids are described, and particular attention is paid to quantitative approaches that take account of particle heterogeneity and polydispersity. Presents critical reviews of the state-of-the-art knowledge of environmental colloids Critical assessment of techniques employed for the sampling, size fractionation and characterisation of colloids and particles are given Theoretical and experimental aspects of the methods as well as the required developments and possible recommendations are discussed Each chapter gives a brief introduction general enough for the non-specialist Written by a internationally recognized group of contributors

Book excerpt: The subjects of the symposia are on composite materials behaving as brittle, normal and special conditions of exploitation. Brittle matrix composites are applied in various domains and the series of symposia are closely related to their applications in civil engineering. In the last decades their importance is increasing along with their variety and the use of most advanced methods of testing. Papers include concretes, fibre concretes and ceramics, particularly their composition, microstructure and fracture processes. Various new and advanced engineering problems are presented in the papers.

Book excerpt: Particle packing has been recognized to influence mechanical and durability properties of cementitious materials, which are generally favored by optimum packing density. Particle size is a common denominator in such studies. Unfortunately, so far, particle shape has not been extensively and unambiguously evaluated in these approaches. Part of it is definitely due to the interconnected nature of size and shape as well as the missing of a clear methodological framework. Nevertheless, various strategies for assessment of shape are available. Capabilities of available advanced computer-simulation systems render possible considering differently-shaped particles. This will make it possible studying in an economic way the effect of shape on properties of densely packed aggregate or binder particles at low w/c ratios. So, shape assessment is becoming an even more relevant issue in structural studies of concrete. This paper presents a somewhat underrated approach to the assessment of shape of (aggregate) particles, i.e. Fourier analysis. A new shape index is proposed.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook provides up-to-date knowledge and practical advice from established authorities in aerosol science. It covers the principles and practices of bioaerosol sampling, descriptions and comparisons of bioaerosol samplers, calibration methods, and assay techniques, with an emphasis on practicalities, such as which sampler to use and where it should be placed. The text also offers critiques concerning handling the samples to provide representative and meaningful assays for their viability, infectivity, and allergenicity. A wide range of microbes-viz., viruses, bacteria, fungi and pollens, and their fragments-are considered from such perspectives. Bioaerosols Handbook is divided into four parts, providing a wide-ranging reference work, as well as a practical guide on how best to sample and assay bioaerosols using current technology.

Book excerpt: Coulson and Richardson's Chemical Engineering: Volume 2A: Particulate Systems and Particle Technology, Sixth Edition, has been fully revised and updated to provide practitioners with an overview of chemical engineering, including clear explanations of theory and thorough coverage of practical applications, all supported by case studies. A worldwide team of contributors has pooled their experience to revise old content and add new content. The content has been updated to be more useful to practicing engineers. This complete reference to chemical engineering will support you throughout your career, as it covers every key chemical engineering topic. Fluid Flow, Heat Transfer and Mass Transfer has been developed from the series' volume 1, 6th edition. This volume covers the three main transport process of interest to chemical engineers: momentum transfer (fluid flow), heat transfer and mass transfer and the relationships between them. Particulate Systems and Particle Technology has been developed from the series' volume 2, 5th edition. This volume covers the properties of particulate systems, including the character of individual particles and their behavior in fluids. Sedimentation of particles, both singly and at high concentrations, flow in packed and fluidized beads and filtration are then examined. Separation Processes has been developed from the series' volume 2, 5th edition. This volume covers distillation and gas absorption, which illustrate applications of the fundamental principles of mass transfer. Several techniques—adsorption, ion exchange, chromatographic and membrane separations, and process intensification—are described. Chemical and Biochemical Reactors and Reaction Engineering has been developed from the series' volume 3, 3rd edition. - Features fully revised reference material converted from textbooks - Covers foundational to technical topics - Features emerging applications, numerical methods and computational tools

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: teacher Professor Ernst-Joachim Ivers to whom I still owe many insights 20 years after the end of his working life. This English edition is not an unedited translation of the German edition of 1990. The text has been substantially revised in some chapters, taking into account the literature published in the mean time. I wish to thank Dr.-Ing. H. Finken, Freiberg, who has prepared the translation from German into English with deep scientific understanding and in close contact with the author. I also wish to express my gratitude to Chapman & Hall for their support to this project without which the English edition could not have been published. Dr.-Ing. habil. C. Bernhardt Freiberg 1 Position, tasks and structure of particle size analysis Today the concept of particle size analysis is that of a special field of particle measurement technology, which in turn is part of particulate technology. This classification has developed over the last 20 years; it is the result of a scientific integration process taking place in many industrialized countries of the world. In recent years, the meaning and mutual connection of the related concepts as well as the tasks of the scientific disciplines designated by them have been the subject of intensive discussion which, however, has not led to a generally accepted terminology.
