Book Synopsis Participatory Development Practice by : Anthony Kelly
Download or read book Participatory Development Practice written by Anthony Kelly and published by Practical Action. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From indigenous people's groups, classroom teachers, and local and international community workers comes the desire to build community. Participatory Development Practice provides a theoretical and applied base for rethinking development practice that is deeply influenced by a 'community' development tradition having its roots in participation and dialogue, yet is broader than that. The book makes the link from the intra-personal to the community and beyond, into the inter-organizational and international domains now required of twenty-first century development work. The book is framed conceptually as implicate method (starting with positioning self), micro (developing constructive relationships), mezzo (forming small participatory groups), macro (structuring participatory work within formal organizations) and meta (working with both local to global and global to local issues). Kelly and Westoby draw on diverse traditions of thought and practice, including the written works of author-activists such as Gandhi, Freire, Fanon, and the unwritten oral traditions of female workers in Asia, and First Peoples. The result is a true and tested methodology using frameworks of good ideas born from practice wisdom, that have come from research and reflection on 70 years of combined experience. Participatory Development Practice helps experienced practitioners, as well as scholars and students of international development, community development and social work, to reflect critically on the concepts and assumptions guiding their work. It is also aimed at corporate actors within community relations departments of major industry who increasingly interact with the public.

Book Synopsis Public Participation in Democratic Governance in South Africa by : Gregory F. Houston
Download or read book Public Participation in Democratic Governance in South Africa written by Gregory F. Houston and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines public participation in democratic governance in South Africa. The South African democracy is fairly new, giving rise to a variety of new channels and processes for public participation. In addition, the overwhelming majority of South Africans have little experience of democratic governance, having only acquired political power for the first time in 1994. However, more than seven years of universal suffrage and access to political power is ample justification for assessing the consolidation of democracy in this country. The book focuses on four case studies of public participation: interest group participation in the National Economic Development and Labour Council; the participation of civil society and the legislatures in the formulation of the budget; public participation in legislative processes; and public participation in the integrated development planning processes of local government. Each case study outlines a number of opportunities for, and constraints to, public participation in the processes of democratic governance.

Young individuals are instrumental in providing valuable insight into issues locally as well as on a national and international level. Participation of Young People in Governance Processes in Africa examines the role of young peoples involvement in governance processes in Africa and demonstrates how they are engaging in active citizenship. There is an intrinsic value in upholding their right to participate in decisions that affect their daily lives and their communities, and the content within this publication supports this by focusing on topics such as good citizenship, youth empowerment, democratic awareness, political climate, and socio-economic development. It is designed for researchers, academics, policymakers, government officials, and professionals whose interests center on the engagement of youth in active citizenship roles.

This report is an analysis of the intended and actual responsibilities of community forums and community-based committees; the value added by community participation in project selection, design, and management, and the problems introduced; the impact of community participation on project performance; and the factors that have constrained the ability of community-based committees to play the role envisioned for them in policy documents. The research provides a window into the developmental changes and challenges faced by South Africa since its transition to democracy in 1994 and reveals the dilemmas and possibilities pertaining to community-driven development projects.

Book Synopsis Regionalism and Uneven Development in Southern Africa by : Fredrik Söderbaum
Download or read book Regionalism and Uneven Development in Southern Africa written by Fredrik Söderbaum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. This volume advances our understanding of how Southern Africa is currently being reconfigured, critically examining what has been marketed as the "flagship" of the Spatial Development Initiative programme in Southern Africa: the Maputo Development Corridor (MDC). By examining a variety of cross-cutting levels of governance and development and by focusing on the nexus between the formal and informal processes that stake out the MDC, this volume contributes to a detailed understanding of what is perhaps the most important current experiment in regionalism in Africa. By engaging regional processes on the micro-level and "on the ground", there is a special emphasis on how local communities regard and respond to the Corridor initiative. All chapters in the volume are the result of extensive fieldwork in both Mozambique and South Africa, and the contributions are drawn from the region and beyond, including Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Sweden and the United States.
Book Synopsis The African National Congress and Participatory Democracy by : Heidi Brooks
Download or read book The African National Congress and Participatory Democracy written by Heidi Brooks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development of democratic thought in the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa, with a focus on the movement’s ideas about participatory democracy. It makes particular reference to two key periods: the 1980s ‘people’s power’ movement and the subsequent years of policy formulation from 1990 when the ANC began to design and implement a system of participatory democracy alongside a representative government. Through the examination of historic documents and in-depth interviews with former ANC activists, government officials and those involved in policy development, the author explores the inspiration for the party’s commitment to establishing participatory democracy. The book combines democratic theory and political and intellectual history to look at the role of popular participation as part of a broader trajectory of the ANC’s democratic thought. It critically engages with concepts used in the party’s participatory discourse with a view to deepening our understanding of how ideas have shaped the construction of South Africa’s democracy.
Book Synopsis Participatory Arts in International Development by : Paul Cooke
Download or read book Participatory Arts in International Development written by Paul Cooke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the practical delivery of participatory arts projects in international development. Bringing together an interdisciplinary group of academics, international development professionals and arts practitioners, the book engages honestly with the competing challenges faced by the different groups of people involved. Participatory arts are becoming increasingly popular in international development circles, fuelled in part by the increased accessibility of audio-visual media in the digital age, and also by the move towards participatory discourses in the wake of the UN’s Agenda 2030. The book asks: What do participatory arts projects look like in practice, and why are they used as an international development tool? How can we develop practical and sustainable development projects on the ground, localising best practice according to cultural, economic and linguistic contexts? What are the enablers of, and barriers to, successful participatory initiatives, and how can we evaluate past projects to learn and feed into future projects? Written to appeal to both academics and practitioners, this book would also be suitable for teaching on courses related to participatory development, community arts, and culture and development.

Book Synopsis Participatory Development and the World Bank by : Bhuvan Bhatnagar
Download or read book Participatory Development and the World Bank written by Bhuvan Bhatnagar and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participatory development is an end and a means. It is an end because participation builds skills and enhances people's capacity for action and for enriching their lives. It is a means because participation contributes to better development policies and projects. As a development agency, the World Bank is primarily concerned with exploring how individuals, communities and public and private institutions can contribute to making development prospects better and more lasting. This report reflects the outcome of a workshop intended to explore some difficult issues, such as whether the Bank is approaching the idea of participation in the right way; how and to what extent external agencies can encourage participatory development. This book is a guide to the learning process. The main messages of the introductory chapter reflect further thinking of the learning groups since the workshop.
