Book excerpt: What is attempted here is a distillation of the collective wisdom of the New Delhi Conference on Non-Formal Education (January 1979) into a readable narrative. Some of the Conference papers are quoted in full: others are used as the basis for a discussion of the major current themes of non-formal education for development. Without the papers and the hard thinking that went into them, no book would have been possible. Without the Conference, their interpretation might well have been different. With the help of both, it is hoped that this book will provide both stimulation and guidance to non-formal educators in the important tasks which lie ahead.

Book Synopsis Non-Formal Education by : Alan Rogers
Download or read book Non-Formal Education written by Alan Rogers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Comparative Education Research Centre (CERC) at the University of Hong Kong is proud and privileged to present this book in its series CERC Studies in Comparative Education. Alan Rogers is a distinguished figure in the field of non-formal education, and brings to this volume more than three decades of experience. The book is a masterly account, which will be seen as a milestone in the literature. It is based on the one hand on an exhaustive review of the literature, and on the other hand on extensive practical experience in all parts of the world. It is a truly comparative work, which fits admirably into the series Much of the thrust of Rogers' work is an analysis not only of the significance of non-formal education but also of the reasons for changing fashions in the development community. Confronting a major question at the outset, Rogers ask why the terminology of non-formal education, which was so much in vogue in the 1970s and 1980s, practically disappeared from the mainstream discourse in the 1990s and initial years of the present century. Much of the book is therefore about paradigms in the domain of development studies, and about the ways that fashions may gloss over substance.

Book Synopsis Education for Adults by : Malcolm Tight
Download or read book Education for Adults written by Malcolm Tight and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of adult education at individual, group and community levels is the concern of this book. Definitions and patterns of adult learning are critically assessed in both this country and abroad, and the processes involved considered in detail. Both case studies and thematic articles have been included and are selected to illustrate the breadth of the field along a number of areas: formal, non-formal and informal education; face-to-face and distance education; from basic levels of education to higher education; from highly deterministic to more ‘open’ or self-directed forms of education. It is felt that the study and practice of the education of adults can be best advanced by the adoption of such a broad view.

Download or read book Key Concepts in Adult Education and Training written by Malcolm Tight and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As adults, we are all continually involved in learning, with increasing numbers of us engaged in more formalized forms of learning; that is, in education or training. All those involved in the broad field of adult education and training will come into contact with many specialist ideas or concepts. It is often assumed of students that they already have a general understanding of these concepts, their meanings, applicability and inter-relationships. This is not always the case. This book examines in detail over forty of these key concepts, ranging from community education and experiential learning to competence and access. It presents a clear, analytical discussion in jargon-free language. It is, therefore, indispensable to all students and practitioners of adult education and training.

Book Synopsis Education in Thailand by : Gerald W. Fry
Download or read book Education in Thailand written by Gerald W. Fry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary book offers a critical analysis of Thai education and its evolution, providing diverse perspectives and theoretical frameworks. In the past five decades Thailand has seen impressive economic success and it is now a middle-income country that provides development assistance to poorer countries. However, educational and social development have lagged considerably behind itsglobally recognized economic success. This comprehensive book covers each level of education, such as higher and vocational/technical education, and such topics as internationalization, inequalities and disparities, alternative education, non-formal and informal education, multilingual education, educational policy and planning, and educational assessment. The 25 Thai and 8 international contributors to the volume include well-known academics and practitioners. Thai education involves numerous paradoxes, which are identified and explained. While Thailand has impressively expanded its educational system quantitatively with much massification, quality problems persist at all levels. As such, the final policy-oriented summary chapter suggests strategies to enable Thailand to escape “the middle income trap” and enhance the quality of its education to ensure its long-term developmental success.
Book Synopsis Curriculum Development in Non-formal Education by : J. D. Ekundayo Thompson
Download or read book Curriculum Development in Non-formal Education written by J. D. Ekundayo Thompson and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two parts of this book consider two main facets of nonformal curriculum development: theory and practice. Part I on nonformal curriculum theory has four chapters. Chapter 1 addresses the origins, meaning, purpose, and scope of nonformal education. Chapter 2 examines three major themes in discussions on nonformal education: nonformal education as an instrument of positive change, as a social control mechanism, and the context. Chapter 3 explores the rationale. Chapter 4 examines the rational planning model and three models that have relevance for curriculum development in nonformal education: psychosocial, liberal education, and Bhola's core-interface. The five chapters in Part II on nonformal curriculum practice consider the case of the People's Educational Association of Sierra Leone in integrating population education into adult literacy. Chapter 5 describes nonformal education in the Sierra Leone context where it is an educational response to the problems of out-of-school youth and illiterate adults and an alternative development strategy. Chapter 6 sets forth the rationale for population education and literacy. Chapter 7 describes the process of curriculum integration. Chapter 8 is a case analysis of the population education project. Chapter 9 highlights these conclusions: contingent nature of curriculum development in nonformal education; importance of learner participation; and need for staff development. Appendixes contain a 359-item bibliography and index. (YLB)

Book excerpt: There is growing recognition that non-formal education (NFE) can play an important role in providing basic education for disadvantaged children and young people.
