Book excerpt: This talk summarizes results of a partial-wave analysis (PWA) of p up arrow p .-->. .delta./sup + +/n .-->. p.pi.n in the dibaryon resonance region, using comprehensive data on single spin correlations from the effective mass spectrometer at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. These results are compared with recent PWA for the bound nucleon final state, pp .-->. .pi.d, by Bugg. These reactions are closely related, and neither displays Breit-Wigner resonance behavior in the larger waves. 13 refs., 7 figs., 3 tabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A striking energy dependence has been observed in the difference between the p-p total cross sections for parallel and antiparallel longitudinal spin states, .delta.sigma/sub L/ = sigma/sup Tot/(reversible) - sigma/sup Tot/(reversible). The structure lab/appears around p/sub lab/ = 1.5 GeV/c where .delta.sigma/sub L/ = -16.7 mb and is seen in sigma/sup Tot/(reversible) rather than sigma/sup Tot/(reversible). The experiments were performed at Argonne National Laboratory using a standard transmission technique. From the dispersion analysis of a forward p-p scattering amplitude using the data on .delta.sigma/sub L/, Grein and Kroll have shown that the Argand plot of the amplitude has a clear resonance-like behavior around proton-incident momentum of 1.5 GeV/c. At the same energy range, the p-p polarization at fixed -t also shows a remarkable energy dependence. In addition, a prominent energy dependence was observed for C/sub LL/ = (L, L;0,0), the spin correlation parameter for elastic pp scattering with beam and target both longitudinally polarized. The possibility of a resonance was further pursued by studying Legendre expansion coefficients of p-p differential cross section and polarization data. The analysis showed a partial wave, 3F3 consistent with having a resonant behavior. Based on a phase-shift analysis, Hoshizaki also showed that 3F3 seems to resonant. This resonant state would have the quantum number J/sup P/ = 3−, mass approx. 2260 MeV, width approx. 200 MeV and elasticity 20 to 30%. This exotic state may be described by the MIT bag model. Also speculated are several more diproton (I = 1) and dinucleon (I = 0) resonances in the mass region 2100 to 2800 MeV. 35 references.

This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Above the inelastic threshold in pp scattering, the partial wave amplitudes get important inelastic contributions. This may lead to observable structure in pp spin measurements. One reviews some of the new pure spin total cross section data, and discuss the possible implications. It is suggested that a systematic study of the medium energy region might clarify some of the issues raised by the new data, in particular that of the existence of dibaryon resonances. Elastic and inelastic polarized pp measurements at ZGS energies are also reviewed as they may provide a clue about which medium energy measurements should be done.

Book excerpt: A preliminary analysis of an experiment designed as a sensitive dibaryon resonance search in the reaction pp.-->.p.pi.n is presented. At 2 GeV/c incident momentum, 440,000 unambiguously reconstructed events were obtained. In this preliminary analysis, the results are reported of a search of the pn mass spectrum for evidence of chain decays of possible dibaryon resonances, i.e. pp.-->.d/sup **/, d/sup **/.-->.d/sup **/.pi./sup +/, d/sup */.-->.pn. No evidence of narrow peaks (less than or equal to 7 MeV) is seen in the data for cross-section-times-branching-ratio greater than 50 .mu.b.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen the development of the operational understanding of fun damental interactions within the standard model. This has detoured our attention from the great enigmas posed by the dynamics and collective behavior of strongly interacting particles. Discovered more than 30 years ago, the thermal nature of the hadronic particle spectra has stimulated considerable theoretical effort, which so far has failed to 'confirm' on the basis of microscopic interactions the origins of this phenomenon. However, a highly successful Statistical Bootstrap Model was developed by Rolf Hagedorn at CERN about 30 years ago, which has led us to consider the 'boiling hadronic matter' as a transient state in the trans formation of hadronic particles into their melted form which we call Quark-GIuon-Plasma (QGP). Today, we return to seek detailed understanding of the thermalization processes of hadronic matter, equipped on the theoretical side with the knowledge of the fundamental strong interaction theory, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), and recognizing the im portant role of the complex QCD-vacuum structure. On the other side, we have developed new experimental tools in the form of nuclear relativistic beams, which allow to create rather extended regions in space-time of Hot Hadronic Matter. The confluence of these new and recent developments in theory and experiment led us to gather together from June 27 to July 1, 1994, at the Grand Hotel in Divonne-Ies-Bains, France, to discuss and expose the open questions and issues in our field.

Book excerpt: The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has recently been more successful than al Qaeda in gaining U.S. terrorist recruits. The authors undertake a demographic profile of individuals drawn to foreign terrorist organizations and find that the affiliates average terrorists recruited by ISIL is younger, less educated, and more likely to be African American/black or Caucasian/white and a U.S.-born citizen.

Book Synopsis Energy Density Functional Methods for Atomic Nuclei by : Nicolas Schunck
Download or read book Energy Density Functional Methods for Atomic Nuclei written by Nicolas Schunck and published by Iph001. This book was released on 2019-01-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy density functional (EDF) approaches have become over the past twenty years a powerful framework to study the structure and reactions of atomic nuclei. This book gives an updated presentation of non-relativistic and covariant energy functionals, single- and multi-reference methods, and techniques to describe small- and large-amplitude collective motion or nuclei at high excitation energy. Edited by an expert in energy density functional theory, Dr Nicolas Schunck, alongside several experts within the field, this book provides a comprehensive and informative exploration of EDF methods. Detailed derivations, practical approaches, examples and figures are used throughout the book to give a coherent narrative of topics that have hitherto rarely been covered together.
