Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry was at one time completely described in terms of collision theo ry, in which one molecule collided with another, sometimes producing reac tion. Then came the realization that enzymes which are highly efficient ca talysts, work by way of prior complexation, often stereospecific, which is then followed by chemical reaction. Thus, systems that exhibit "host-guest" relationships, i.e., that show complexing are being looked at an ever in creasing frequency. The cyclodextrins are the first and probably the most important example of compounds that exhibits complex formation. This is a book about the cyclodextrins. There are of course other compounds that exhibit "host-guest" relationships and thus bind other organic molecules, but so far they have not achieved the importance of the cyclodextrins. By their name it is obvious that cyclodextrins are cyclic compounds. The complexes that they form are therefore cyclic inclusion complexes. Because the complexes are cyclic in nature, complexation can be very strong, as op posed to 1t-complex, electrostatic, or apolar complexes in which complex formation is two-dimensional rather than three-dimensional. Cyclodextrins turn out to be excellent models of enzymes. This is proba bly not fortuitous because they were first sought since it was discovered that the principal binding in the enzyme chymotrypsin was a cyclic inclusion complex. Cyclodextrins can do more than form cyclic inclusion complexes, they can catalyze as well. But catalysis always occurs after complex formation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic laboratory technique in organic chemistry plays a vital part in the education of chemistry students. This textbook contains a collection of multistep experiments that all feature one or two photochemical key steps. More than 40 researchers active in the field of organic photochemistry have contributed their favorite experiments for this unusual and modern textbook. In addition, a general section discusses reaction control, the interpretation of UV spectra, quantum yields and chemical yields, and gives information on solvents, lamps, filters, and vessels. The experiments chosen fulfil the following criteria: * starting materials are cheap and readily available * the necessary photochemical equipment is available in (most) institutes * products prepared are useful for further syntheses * the light reaction is efficient. 'Photochemical Key Steps' is a source book of new ideas for supervisors of lab courses and gives students the opportunity to learn about modern techniques in the laboratory and about the important role photochemistry plays in organic synthesis.

This detailed that the photochemical reaction between a carbonyl compound and an alkene gives a corresponding oxetane. This oxetane ring is present in several naturally occurring compounds and bioactive compounds, and can be obtained with high regio- and stereoselectivity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green Chemistry is an inventive science based on fundamental research towards the development of new sustainable chemical processes. There is a great need to create a new type of chemistry focused on a new production system, in order to prepare the younger generation to get a greener future. The globalization pushes the chemistry community to adopt ethical issues. In this prospect Green Chemistry can achieve the approval of the society by teaching students to be confident in science and at the same time by convincing people that it is possible to attain technological development with respect and care for the environment we live in. This is why it is of foremost importance that education and fundamental research remain strictly connected, so that democracy and development can grow and progress side by side. This book has been prepared to extend the knowledge of Green Chemistry not disregarding, however, the industrial interest. It is the result of the effort to put together and share the expertise of leading practitioners in the field of Green Chemistry. The Interuniversity Consortium ‘Chemistry for the Environment’ is a non-profit organisation established in 1993 in Italy. At present it includes 31 member universities and 80 research units.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing knowledge and understanding of organic reaction mechanisms has been a major factor in the rapid advance of organic chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology in the last century. It therefore forms a vital part of today's chemistry courses. Mechanisms in Organic Reactions helps students to make sensible proposals for the mechanisms of particular organic reactions, and then how to distinguish between different possible mechanisms. Techniques for this include product studies, kinetics, and the identification of intermediates. Three chapters on intermediates discuss likely points of attack on molecules by anions, radicals and cations, and the important role of acid- and base-catalysed reactions and radical chain reactions. The prediction of reaction rates and the effects of structural changes on reaction rate are also covered. It concludes with a discussion of molecular reactions, both thermal and photochemical - reactions which provide deep and beautiful insights into the reasons why some reactions go and others do not, and why the majority of real-life reactions involve multi-step processes. The book provides both illuminating insights into fundamental chemistry, and also practical value for students who will go on to teach, research, or be involved in other scientific roles (administration, policy making or journalism). Ideal for the needs of undergraduate chemistry students, Tutorial Chemistry Texts is a major series consisting of short, single topic or modular texts concentrating on the fundamental areas of chemistry taught in undergraduate science courses. Each book provides a concise account of the basic principles underlying a given subject, embodying an independent-learning philosophy and including worked examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alphaherpesviruses are a fascinating group of DNA viruses that includes important human pathogens such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and varicella-zoster virus (VZV): the causative agents of cold sores, genital ulcerous disease, and chickenpox/shingles, respectively. A key attribute of these viruses is their ability to establish lifelong latent infection in the peripheral nervous system of the host. Such persistence requires subversion of the host's immune system and intrinsic antiviral defense mechanisms. Understanding the mechanisms of the immune evasion and what triggers viral reactivation is a major challenge for today's researchers. This has prompted enormous research efforts into understanding the molecular and cellular biology of these viruses. This up-to-date and comprehensive volume aims to distill the most important research in this area providing a timely overview of the field. Topics covered include: transcriptional regulation, DNA replication, translational control, virus entry and capsid assembly, the role of microRNAs in infection and oncolytic vectors for cancer therapy. In addition there is coverage of virus-host interactions, including apoptosis, subversion of host protein quality control and DNA damage response pathways, autophagy, establishment and reactivation from latency, interferon responses, immunity and vaccine development. Essential reading for everyone working with alphaherpesviruses and of interest to all virologists working on latent infections.
