Book excerpt: "[The report] finds that supervision -– probation and parole -– drives high numbers of people, disproportionately those who are Black and brown, right back to jail or prison, while in large part failing to help them get needed services and resources. In states examined in the report, people are often incarcerated for violating the rules of their supervision or for low-level crimes, and receive disproportionate punishment following proceedings that fail to adequately protect their fair trial rights."--Publisher website.

Book Synopsis The Female Offender by : Walter Cade Reckless
Download or read book The Female Offender written by Walter Cade Reckless and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The known or suspected dimensions of officially acted-upon involvement of women and girls in crime and delinquency should be reviewed, in order to sense whether the available information offers guidelines for a realistic policy in handling the female offender throughout the length and breadth of the legal and correctional process. The outstanding research studies on the female offender, although extremely scarce, should also be reviewed to see whether they contain any guidelines for policy. In developing a rationale for effective, justifiable handling of the officially acted-upon female offender, it is important to develop a totally integrated policy all the way along the line of the leg-correction procedures from arrest to parole, which policy is just not concentrated on the terminal phases of these procedures, such as probation, institutionalization, and release.

Book Synopsis Corrections by : United States. National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals
Download or read book Corrections written by United States. National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commission recommends specific standards in pursuit of the achievement of six major goals for the improvement of the American correctional system. The American correctional system today appears to offer minimum protection for the public and maximum harm to the offender. The National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals, in its report on corrections, has proposed about 140 standards designed to change that situation. The standards spell out in detail where, why, how, and what improvements can and should be made in the corrections segment of the criminal justice system. This report is a reference work for the correctional professional as well as for the interested layman. Among its goals, the commission urges that disparities in sentencing be removed and justice in corrections be upheld by measures guaranteeing offenders' rights during and after incarceration. The scope of corrections can, and should, be narrowed by diverting many juveniles and sociomedical cases (alcoholics, drug addicts, prostitutes, and the mentally disturbed) to noncorrectional treatment programs and by decriminalizing certain minor offenses such as public drunkenness and vagrancy. Another goal states that probation should become the standard criminal sentence, retaining confinement chiefly for dangerous offenders and releasing a majority of offenders to improved and extended community-based programs. Corrections should undergo a planned integration into the total criminal justice system with each state unifying all correctional functions and programs for adults and juveniles within its executive branch.
Book Synopsis Dictionary of Criminal Justice Data Terminology by : Search Group
Download or read book Dictionary of Criminal Justice Data Terminology written by Search Group and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical reference work contains a large selection of proposed standard terms and definitions and model data structures, continuing the effort to develop a uniform national terminology for collecting and exchanging justice information and statistics. It incorporates material from and supersedes the first edition. It is primarily intended for the use of justice data collectors, processors, analysts, and interpreters, particularly those who are concerned with the communication of justice information between the States and at the national level. The recommended terminology is intended to promote the unambiguous description and communication of basic facts concerning criminal and juvenile justice processes, agencies, alleged and adjudicated offenders, and offenses. Model data structures describe standardizable units and events in selected subject areas and explicate category and term relationships. Each entry in the dictionary provides either recommended data system usages, or a description of actual usages in the justice community, or both. A discussion of the role of terminology in data system development and statistics and of problems in the development and adoption of an unambiguous and consistent technical vocabulary is included.
