Book Synopsis Looking Beyond Words by : Giuliana Salvato
Download or read book Looking Beyond Words written by Giuliana Salvato and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of the growing number of insights found in recent research on gesture studies and language acquisition, which have renewed the attention of scholars in gesture functions and meanings in communication and language learning. Observation of the participation of both gesture and speech in the formulation of meaning has revealed that communication is typically multimodal. This perspective has produced engrossing research questions, particularly in contexts where the combination of languages and cultures is complex and diversified. Competence in multiple languages and in different semiotic systems inevitably impacts the way in which people interact and learn languages. Given its status as a country of immigration, Canada provides such a context for this study. This book discusses the changes that the literature on gesture studies can help implement in current practices of language pedagogy. By including gesture as a nonverbal dimension of language and as a means for language acquisition, it provides a contrast to those traditions that have viewed gesture as a marginal aspect of communication and language learning. In addition, this book offers the results of three research studies in Italian language classes in Canada, showing that gesture enables a multimodal approach in language pedagogy and a richer experience for both teachers and learners.

Book Synopsis Pragmatic Aspects of L2 Communication by : Sara Gesuato
Download or read book Pragmatic Aspects of L2 Communication written by Sara Gesuato and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pragmatic aspects of communication are increasingly high on the agenda of applied linguists, in parallel with the recent advancements in the broader field of pragmatics research. As such, this volume brings together contributions addressing pragmatic aspects of L2 communication, taking into account the complementary perspectives of researchers, language practitioners and language learners. These studies were conducted with both qualitative and quantitative methods, and were set in various linguo-cultural contexts, spanning from Norway through Croatia and Italy to Canada and Colombia. The volume illustrates how pragmatic awareness and proficiency are crucial to communicative, interactional and, more generally, social competence. It also sheds light on how the results of pragmatic investigations can be fruitfully applied to language teaching and assessment in primary and tertiary education. Finally, it maintains an expanded perspective on pragmatic knowledge, as it examines both verbal and nonverbal components of communication, showing how they all contribute to the formulation and interpretation of meanings in context. The book will be of interest to language students, language teachers and scholars in applied pragmatics.

Book Synopsis A Theoretical Framework for Language Education and Teaching by : Paolo E. Balboni
Download or read book A Theoretical Framework for Language Education and Teaching written by Paolo E. Balboni and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational linguistics is transcultural, with research in the field adopting an international scope. Educational systems, on the contrary, are culture-bound. As a consequence, actual teaching differs across countries, and sometimes even among provinces, local educational authorities, and schools. However, a globalized world needs to share the various meanings of “knowing a language” and “teaching a language”, as language is the main factor of both cultural identity and national and international interaction. The framework offered here is built on eight “hypotheses”, logical models that provide the potential common core of a non-culture-bound theory of language education and of language teaching. The book thus suggests a common terminology, some common principles, and a basic paradigm to be shared in both theoretical and practical research in edu-linguistics, consequently going beyond the borders implied by such titles as European framework, American standards, and Chinese guidelines.

This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the economic, social and historical changes of recent years, education today needs a re-thinking of its methodologies and goals. This book presents an innovative approach to language and culture teaching and learning in a context of full-immersion: EUFICCS (European Use of Full-Immersion, Culture, Content and Service) . Only thanks to a comprehensive and holistic way of conceiving the educational path, based on the practice of reflection, can students be empowered with those intercultural and democratic competences necessary to function as future global citizens. The EUFICCS approach offers some guidelines that can be applicable in several educational contexts, all around the globe. This publication is specifically addressed to educators, language and content teachers and all education practitioners, but it also discusses more general issues, such as interculturality, relations with the other, and service in the community.
Book Synopsis Digital Resources, Creativity and Innovative Methodologies in Language Teaching and Learning by : Adriana Teresa Damascelli
Download or read book Digital Resources, Creativity and Innovative Methodologies in Language Teaching and Learning written by Adriana Teresa Damascelli and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of university language centres has changed in recent decades. Initially conceived as laboratories for practical and autonomous language-learning, they are now considered as places with more specific and complex functions in language teaching and learning. University language centres now constitute networks for exchanging knowledge and know-how in order to respond to ever-changing, multilingual and multicultural contexts. At the same time, the availability and acquisition of new technologies is contributing to the creation of new tools for the provision of appropriate services and training. This collection covers a wide range of topics related to the activities, experiences and applied research carried out in Italian university language centres. It provides further evidence of the important role university language centres play in promoting language expertise, developing tools and adopting digital resources, and providing support and training for language teaching. Technology, creativity, methodologies and plurilingualism are key topics in the book as they constitute the essential ingredients for effective and successful language teaching and learning. The volume’s thirty-three chapters provide multi-perspective approaches, showing how the real contexts of current language education need the integration of theoretical backgrounds with the best practices resulting from practical experience.
Book Synopsis CALL for widening participation: short papers from EUROCALL 2020 by : Karen-Margrete Frederiksen
Download or read book CALL for widening participation: short papers from EUROCALL 2020 written by Karen-Margrete Frederiksen and published by Research-publishing.net. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the EUROCALL society succeeded in holding the 28th EUROCALL conference, EUROCALL2020, on 20-21 August as an online, two-day gathering. The transition process required to make this happen was demanding and insightful for everyone involved, and, in many ways, a logical consequence of the core content and purpose of EUROCALL. Who would be better suited to transform an onsite conference into an online event than EUROCALL? CALL for widening participation was this year’s theme. We welcomed contributions from both theoretical and practical perspectives in relation to the many forms and contexts of CALL. We particularly welcomed longitudinal studies or studies that revisited earlier studies. The academic committee accepted 300 abstracts for paper presentations, symposia, workshops, and posters under this theme; 57 short papers are published in this volume. We hope you will enjoy reading this volume, the first one to reflect a one hundred percent online EUROCALL conference/Online Gathering.
Book Synopsis Intercultural Horizons Volume III by : Lavinia Bracci
Download or read book Intercultural Horizons Volume III written by Lavinia Bracci and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a representative set of the papers given at the third annual Intercultural Horizons conference held in Siena, Italy, in October 2013. The conference attracted presenters and attendees from a variety of nations throughout five continents. The papers included in this volume are drawn from a series of conference sessions in which academicians and practitioners in the field offered theoretical analyses, case studies and other perspectives on intercultural studies, civic engagement and related topics. The volume is divided into four sections: Theoretical Considerations of Intercultural Competence and Interculturalism; Intercultural Development and Assessment: Practical Examples and Research; Civic Engagement in International and Culturally Diverse Contexts; and Intercultural Education and Training. The reader will find that most of the papers address a variety of intercultural topics beyond their specific chapter designations. In particular, the theme of second language acquisition, education and use was an overarching theme that emerged from a large number of papers and presentations, specifically with regards to the complexities now faced by intercultural educators and researchers as a result of the increasing dominance of English as a “lingua franca” both in academe and many nations.

Book Synopsis Prosodic and Rhythmic Aspects of L2 Acquisition by : Anna De Meo
Download or read book Prosodic and Rhythmic Aspects of L2 Acquisition written by Anna De Meo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, prosodic competence has become increasingly important in second language acquisition studies, as it is a crucial element in the identification of non-native pronunciation and message understanding. This volume is the first attempt to provide a survey of interlanguage prosody research in L2 Italian. It begins with an overview of the possible approaches to the study of rhythmic-prosodic skills acquisition in an L2. The second part of the book emphasizes the relationship between the mother tongue and a second language, and investigates the presence of transfer in prosody interlanguage development. The third part illustrates prosody’s role in the interpretation of pragmatic meaning in native-non-native interaction, and its influence on message persuasiveness. And in the fourth part, technology meets prosody in the areas of second language teaching and speech synthesis.

How is the European Union structured? What are its features and how should it change to take that qualitative step and achieve the original idea of a land that is the cradle of different, but close nations, and turn itself into a united Europe which represents the States but also the citizens. In one word, a Federation? Today’s Europe is a great door with many locks; to discover the Europe of the future and look ahead of us, we need to find all the keys and open all these doors. This is why we wrote this book, which takes a picture of some of the main features of today’s Europe, each one of which is a lock that needs to be opened, and for which we try to suggest the right keys. The keys of our European federation.
