Book Synopsis The 2019 Parliamentary Elections in India by : Subrata K. Mitra
Download or read book The 2019 Parliamentary Elections in India written by Subrata K. Mitra and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive overview of India’s electoral democracy and political system. It provides an in-depth analysis of the 2019 parliamentary elections to explore three crucial facts of India’s political life: the legitimacy of political competition as the only basis of power; elections as the only legitimate basis of political competition; and political parties as the only legitimate agency to conduct political competition. The book argues that the vitality and resilience of India’s electoral democracy remain high owing to large mass participation in elections that are competitive and relatively free and fair. The volume includes key theoretical, empirical, and comparative perspectives on parties and elections from experts, and covers all major political parties of India, along with the performance of many representative regional parties. It discusses themes such as elections and party competition in India; ideology, interest, religion, and gender as they affect social mobilisation and political transaction; economic and politial change, and multiparty democracy; the dynamics of the Muslim vote; fluctuating electoral fortunes; and electoral campaigns and role of social media. This book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of political science, political sociology, election studies, Indian politics, South Asian politics, and South Asian studies. It will also interest those in politics, public policy and governance, civil society organisations, media and journalism, and the general reader.
Book Synopsis Media Concentration and Democracy by : C. Edwin Baker
Download or read book Media Concentration and Democracy written by C. Edwin Baker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-12-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firmly rooting its argument in democratic and economic theory, the book argues that a more democratic distribution of communicative power within the public sphere and a structure that provides safeguards against abuse of media power provide two of three primary arguments for ownership dispersal. It also shows that dispersal is likely to result in more owners who will reasonably pursue socially valuable journalistic or creative objectives rather than a socially dysfunctional focus on the 'bottom line'. The middle chapters answer those agents, including the Federal Communication Commission, who favor 'deregulation' and who argue that existing or foreseeable ownership concentration is not a problem. The final chapter evaluates the constitutionality and desirability of various policy responses to concentration, including strict limits on media mergers.

Book Synopsis Parting at the Crossroads by : Antonia Maioni
Download or read book Parting at the Crossroads written by Antonia Maioni and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As almost all newspaper or magazine readers know, Canada figured prominently in the turbulent U.S. debates over health care reform in the early Clinton presidency. Furthermore, future news analysts and policymakers will undoubtedly again use Canada to cite the "good" and the "bad" aspects of single-payer national health insurance. Beyond the debate about the desirability of Canadian-style health care reforms, Antonia Maioni sees another question: Why did the United States and Canada, alike in so many ways, part "at the crossroads" to produce such different systems of health insurance? She answers this previously neglected query so interestingly that her book will hold the attention of anyone concerned with health care in either country or both. The author explores the development of health insurance in the United States and Canada, from the emergence of health care as a political issue in the 1930s to the passage of federal health insurance legislation in the 1960s. Focusing on how political institutions influence policy development, she shows that Canada's federal structure and its parliamentary institutions encouraged a social-democratic third party that became pivotal in demonstrating the feasibility of universal, public health insurance. Meanwhile, the constraints of the U.S. political system forced health care reformers to temper their own ideas to appeal to a wide coalition within the Democratic party. Even readers previously unfamiliar with Canadian politics will find in this book important clues about the "realm of the possible" in the uncertain future of U.S. health care.
Book Synopsis The Contested Status of Political Elites by : Lars Vogel
Download or read book The Contested Status of Political Elites written by Lars Vogel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Western societies are witnessing ground-breaking social, economic and political changes at an accelerating pace. These changes are challenging the way democracy works and the role that political elites play in this system of government. Using a theoretical and empirical approach, this volume argues that political elites are urged to develop new strategies in order to achieve interest aggregation, to safeguard collective action, and to maintain elite autonomy and stability. The adaptive capacities of political elites are assessed through case studies, comparative and longitudinal analyses of their social structure, their recruitment patterns, and their attitudes. The book includes contributions from reputable scholars in the field of elite research and specialists on individual political systems across Europe and the US. It provides an analytical framework demonstrating that political elites are inevitable and potentially able to respond successfully to varying challenges. The book will be of key interest to scholars and students of political elites, democracy, comparative politics, political participation and European Politics.

In addition, the volume sheds light on the creation of a multi-party system which paved the way for the expression of particular views and interests and generated much of memory's concepts and language.
Book Synopsis Dynasties and Democracy by : Daniel M. Smith
Download or read book Dynasties and Democracy written by Daniel M. Smith and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although democracy is, in principle, the antithesis of dynastic rule, families with multiple members in elective office continue to be common around the world. In most democracies, the proportion of such "democratic dynasties" declines over time, and rarely exceeds ten percent of all legislators. Japan is a startling exception, with over a quarter of all legislators in recent years being dynastic. In Dynasties and Democracy, Daniel M. Smith sets out to explain when and why dynasties persist in democracies, and why their numbers are only now beginning to wane in Japan—questions that have long perplexed regional experts. Smith introduces a compelling comparative theory to explain variation in the presence of dynasties across democracies and political parties. Drawing on extensive legislator-level data from twelve democracies and detailed candidate-level data from Japan, he examines the inherited advantage that members of dynasties reap throughout their political careers—from candidate selection, to election, to promotion into cabinet. Smith shows how the nature and extent of this advantage, as well as its consequences for representation, vary significantly with the institutional context of electoral rules and features of party organization. His findings extend far beyond Japan, shedding light on the causes and consequences of dynastic politics for democracies around the world.

Book Synopsis Democracy at the Crossroads by : Cameron White
Download or read book Democracy at the Crossroads written by Cameron White and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Democracy at the Crossroads, the editors argue that there have been too few scholarly attempts to provide a comprehensive critique of the assumptions behind citizenship education. In particular, they ask the distinguished contributors to this volume to address difficult but essential questions that are often avoided or intentionally overlooked: What do all-embracing terms like 'global citizenship' really mean? What does democracy mean internationally? A timely work, Democracy at the Crossroad provides a necessary examination and re-interpretation of international perspectives on democracy and global citizenship as they apply to social education.
Book Synopsis Democratic Crossroads by : Richard Youngs
Download or read book Democratic Crossroads written by Richard Youngs and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 209 pages. Book excerpt: In Democratic Crossroads, Richard Youngs argues that there are three crises are altering the balance between democratic and authoritarian dynamics around the world: climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic legacy, and geopolitical conflict. Yet while they add to the strains on democracy, they are also awakening a momentum of democratic resilience and renewal. Youngs argues that without stronger commitments to uphold and improve democratic norms and practices, democracy may not weather these challenges. In a moment of pivotal change, this book highlights key factors that will determine democracy's fortunes in the future.
Book Synopsis Parliamentary Democracy In India by : Dr Lm Singhvi
Download or read book Parliamentary Democracy In India written by Dr Lm Singhvi and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most fundamental and far-reaching decision of India’s Constitution-makers was to establish the Indian democracy on the foundations of universal adult suffrage and on the principle of ‘one man; on vote’. The decision was an act of faith; homage to the people of India; implicit in the liberal outlook of India’s freedom struggle. The decision to adopt universal adult suffrage was simple and without controversy; but it was by all accounts momentous and revolutionary; making every adult Indian citizen irrespective of caste; sex and economic or educational qualification; a shareholder in India’s democratic enterprise. Consequent of that decision; India became the largest democracy in the world. The Indian Parliament exercises influence rather than power. Its functions lie primarily in processes of consultation and articulation and in the audit and scrutiny of the operations of the government. The substance of the power resides in the cabinet; and more particularly; in the office of the prime minister; but the sanction for that political power is provided by the representative principle embodied in the Parliament.
