Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of CONCURRENCY 88, an international conference on formal methods for distributed systems, held October 18-19, 1988 in Hamburg. CONCURRENCY 88 responded to great interest in the field of formal methods as a means of mastering the complexity of distributed systems. In addition, the impulse was determined by the fact that the various methodological approaches, such as constructive or property oriented methods, have not had an extensive comparative analysis nor have they been investigated with respect to their possible integration and their practical implications. The following topics were addressed: Specification Languages, Models for Distributed Systems, Verification and Validation, Knowledge Based Protocol Modeling, Fault Tolerance, Distributed Databases. The volume contains 12 invited papers and 14 contributions selected by the program committee. They were presented by authors from Austria, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of the second International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT) held in Bruges, Belgium, August 31 - September 2, 1988. ICDT intends to provide a European forum for the international research community working on theoretical issues related to database and knowledge base systems. The proceedings of this conference contain all invited and accepted papers, which represent the latest results obtained in ongoing research in database theory worldwide. Most major themes of research in database theory are covered in ICDT '88: the relational model, logic and databases, object-oriented databases, deductive databases, conceptual models, analysis and design of data structures, query languages, concurrency control and updates and transactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers which were presented to the workshop "Computer-Science Logic" held in Karlsruhe on October 12-16, 1987. Traditionally Logic, or more specifically, Mathematical Logic splits into several subareas: Set Theory, Proof Theory, Recursion Theory, and Model Theory. In addition there is what sometimes is called Philosophical Logic which deals with topics like nonclassical logics and which for historical reasons has been developed mainly at philosphical departments rather than at mathematics institutions. Today Computer Science challenges Logic in a new way. The theoretical analysis of problems in Computer Science for intrinsic reasons has pointed back to Logic. A broad class of questions became visible which is of a basically logical nature. These questions are often related to some of the traditional disciplines of Logic but normally without being covered adequately by any of them. The novel and unifying aspect of this new branch of Logic is the algorithmic point of view which is based on experiences people had with computers. The aim of the "Computer-Science Logic" workshop and of this volume is to represent the richness of research activities in this field in the German-speaking countries and to point to their underlying general logical principles.

Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on the Mathematical Foundations of Programming Language Semantics held at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, April 8-10, 1987. The 1st Workshop was at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas in April, 1985 (see LNCS 239), and the 2nd Workshop with a limited number of participants was at Kansas State in April, 1986. It was the intention of the organizers that the 3rd Workshop survey as many areas of the Mathematical Foundations of Programming Language Semantics as reasonably possible. The Workshop attracted 49 submitted papers, from which 28 papers were chosen for presentation. The papers ranged in subject from category theory and Lambda-calculus to the structure theory of domains and power domains, to implementation issues surrounding semantics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Voronoi diagram of a set of sites is a partition of the plane into regions, one to each site, such that the region of each site contains all points of the plane that are closer to this site than to the other ones. Such partitions are of great importance to computer science and many other fields. The challenge is to compute Voronoi diagrams quickly. The problem is that their structure depends on the notion of distance and the sort of site. In this book the author proposes a unifying approach by introducing abstract Voronoi diagrams. These are based on the concept of bisecting curves, which are required to have some simple properties that are actually possessed by most bisectors of concrete Voronoi diagrams. Abstract Voronoi diagrams can be computed efficiently and there exists a worst-case efficient algorithm of divide-and-conquer type that applies to all abstract Voronoi diagrams satisfying a certain constraint. The author shows that this constraint is fulfilled by the concrete diagrams based on large classes of metrics in the plane.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 14th Spring School of the LITP (Laboratoire d`Informatique Thorique et de Programmation, Universit Paris VI-VII, CNRS) held May 12-16, 1986 in Argels-Village on the French Catalan coast. This meeting was organized by C. Choffrut, M. Nivat, F. Robert, P. Sall and gathered a hundred participants. The proceedings of the last two Spring Schools have already been published in this series and deal with "Automata on Infinite Words" (LNCS 192) and "Combinators and Functional Programming Languages" (LNCS 242). The purpose of this yearly meeting is to present the state of the art in a specific topic which has gained considerable maturity. The field chosen this year was the theory of automata networks. Though the content of this book is essentially restricted to computer science aspects of the topic, illustrations were given at the meeting on how the model of cellular automata could be used to solve problems in statistical, fluid and solid state mechanics. Applications to biology with growth models also exist

The theme of the workshop was Visualization in Human-Computer Interaction. Visualization is nowadays recognized as an important aspect of user-oriented human-computer interfaces. Both informatics and psychology are concerned with this topic. In informatics, the technology is being developed which makes visualization and interaction based on visual concepts feasible. Another important trend in informatics is the development of prototypical solutions. Visual programming, visual languages, graphical interfaces, visual representations and many other keywords characterize current efforts in this field. Psychologists are working on the question of how people represent knowledge visually and how they can take advantage of visual representations when solving tasks.

It is a unique combination of research level articles on various aspects of the theory of finite automata and its applications. Advances made in the last five years on the mathematical foundations form the first part of the book. The second part is devoted to the important problems of the theory including star-height, concatenation hierarchies, and connections with logic and word problems. The last part presents a large variety of possible applications: number theory, distributed systems, algorithms on strings, theory of codes, complexity of boolean circuits and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats the problem of formulating models in mathematical programming, and thereafter solving the resulting model. Particular emphasis is placed on the interaction between the two. The topic is viewed from different angles, namely linear programming (Walter Murray), integer programming (Ellis Johnson), network flows (John Mulvey), and stochastic programming (Roger J-B Wets). The book will be very useful for any mathematics programmer or operations researcher who works in the field of real-world modelling. The book is an important part of any university course in modelling, particularly in operations research, economics and business. The book also contains an article on the origins of mathematical programming (Alexander Rinnooy Kan). This is important reading for anyone interested in the history of the field.
