Book excerpt: How one activity can lead to lifelong benefits for your child: “Parents, teachers, and all who love children will be inspired.” —Amy Dickinson, New York Times bestselling author of Strangers Tend to Tell Me Things Longtime elementary school teacher Kim Jocelyn Dickson believes every child begins kindergarten with a lunchbox in one hand and an “invisible toolbox” in the other. In this book, she shares with parents the single most important thing they can do to foster their child’s future learning potential and nurture the parent-child bond that is the foundation for a child’s motivation to learn. Drawing on both neuroscientific research and her own experience as an educator, she concludes that the simple act of reading aloud has a far-reaching impact that few of us fully understand—and our recent, nearly universal saturation in technology has further clouded its importance. In The Invisible Toolbox, parents, educators, and early literacy advocates will discover:Ten priceless tools that fill their child’s toolbox when they read aloud to their childTools parents can give themselves to foster these gifts in their childrenPractical tips for how and what to read aloud to children through their developmental stagesDos and don’ts and recommended resources that round out all the practical tools a parent will need to prepare their child for kindergarten and beyondHow parents can build their own toolboxes so they can help their children build theirs

Book excerpt: This Is Parenting on Your Own Terms Chances are, you'd rather not forfeit your happy, rested life the moment you become a parent. As a mom, you may want to keep your career, but aren't sure how to balance it with housework and childcare. As a dad, you probably want to witness your child's milestones, but a demanding job may get in the way. And what about time for yourself (never mind your sex life)? Marc and Amy Vachon were determined to beat this scenario when their first child was born. They vowed to sidestep the world's expectations of new parents and create a parenthood model that worked for them. Their strategy was to share everything-the good and the bad. They became peers in each area of parenthood: childcare, housework, and breadwinning. They also made time for themselves, and for each other. They shared the burdens so nobody was overwhelmed, and the joys so neither missed out on the fun. Drawing on Marc and Amy's experiences, as well as those of dozens of ESP couples, Equally Shared Parenting shows you how to create a balanced life that is rarely experienced by today's parents. It's not just about who vacuums and who does the dishes, or who brings in the paycheck and who tends to the kids. You'll learn how to look at every aspect of parenthood, money, careers, and your individual needs, so you can build a life that works for you both.

You can parent well and build a stronger relationship even through the teen years. After 30 years of parenting five children and 20 years of working with teens, Connie Albers has witnessed the negative impact of well-intentioned but misguided parenting styles, all focused on managing teens rather than guiding them. But through learning to focus on the hearts of your teens, you can avoid those pitfalls and build relationships that last beyond the transition years as you intentionally learn about, connect with, and listen to your teens. In a world filled with distractions and devices, it is possible to guide their hearts and remain the primary influence in their lives. In Parenting beyond the Rules, you will discover how to raise a teen according to his or her strengths, talents, and personality type, as these things equip teens to manage life. Join Connie Albers in discovering practical solutions for every parent trying to raise a responsible, godly teenager.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Easy to follow parenting skills for the difficult task of parenting There is so much information out there that sometimes it's hard to determine what works and what doesn't. If you search the internet for "How to cook a turkey," you'll find more ways to cook a turkey than there are turkeys to cook. The same goes for parenting skills. Our aim for this book was to cut through all of the glitter and glam, all the internet and TV sensationalism, and create a menu of core parenting skills, based on the research and many years of experience in the field. In our practice, we have seen a diverse array of families, including families with children with autism, addictions issues, conduct and oppositional defiance disorders, depression, and other special needs. We have also met families that just needed a little help getting back on track. With all families, there are a few core skills that must be used and honed and rehoned before any other issues can be addressed. There is so much information on TV and the internet - a lot of it is merely fluff to sell books - but there are really only a few skills that parents actually need. Those are the skills that are in this book - guided solutions for you as a parent. Skill Boxes and Scripts There are three core skills based on the way people communicate, the way people are motivated, and the way children respond to parents as leaders of the household. There are also supporting skills that parents should pay attention to in order to help the family system as a whole function as well as possible. These skills are easy to learn, but parents should constantly hone the skills and sub-skills - we even are constantly honing these skills for use in our own homes. What we've tried to do in this book is provide specific, practical, and guided information that provide solutions to most parenting problems. Throughout the book, you'll find boxes that describe the core skills and sub-skills, and some have scripted examples of proper usage. As a matter of fact, every skill that we believe is core to parenting is described in Chapter 1. The rest of the book describes those skills in detail and provides background information. Some of the skills are scripted, because we've found that it helps to have the situation in your head before you encounter the situation with your child. Every situation will be different, but the scripts outline the basic direction of the conversation. You may want to use the script as you hone the skill, and eventually you'll find your own voice.
