Many women, teenagers, and young girls struggle with a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), or ED-NOS eating disorder not otherwise specified. There continues to be an emphasis on "thinness" in our society, which contributes to symptoms and diagnoses. Several research projects have focused on what factors can combine to make a female (or male) more susceptible to developing an eating disorder. The present study attempted to examine the link between attachment theory, or specifically attachment to parents and attachment in adulthood and eating disorder symptoms. The present study also explored eating disorder symptoms and the presence of past engagement in special diets, i.e. vegan, gluten free, vegetarian, etc. The sample consisted of 66 female college students who answered questions from the following measures: Short Evaluation of Eating disorders (SEED), Attachment Styles Questionnaire (ASQ), Parental Attachment Questionnaire (PAQ), and questions related to special diet engagement. In the present study it was predicted, but not supported that there would be a relationship between insecure attachment overall and eating disordered behavior. It was also predicted, but not supported that there would be a correlation between insecure attachments with a father or the mother and eating disordered behavior. The present study also predicted that individuals who engage in special diets are more likely to have eating disordered behaviors, and those individuals who engage in special diets are more likely to have an insecure attachment. These results were mixed, and there was significance for Anorexia Nervosa total severity index (AN-TSI or behaviors that were tied to Anorexic AN behaviors) but not for Bulimia Nervosa- TSI, or bulimia linked behaviors. Suggestions for future research and clinical implications are also discussed.

Book excerpt: This study tested two conceptualizations regarding psychological factors associated with eating disturbances: a "continuum" perspective and a noncontinuum perspective. The study measured levels of self-objectification, parental attachment, and sociotropy-autonomy reported by 162 asymptomatic, symptomatic, and eating disordered college women. Findings provide more support for a non-continuum perspective. Specifically, a linear pattern of means was found for body surveillance, body shame, sociotropy, and solitude, with the eating disorders group differing significantly from the other two groups on 3 of these 4 variables. Categorization of EDNOS participants, who did not differ from bulimic participants on any variable, may explain discrepancies between these findings and continuum-supportive findings. Correlations among these variables are explored and research and counseling implications discussed.

This is often the result of societal demands, and can be greatly influenced by the relationships a woman has with her parents. The purpose of this study was to focus specifically on the father-daughter relationship of college women diagnosed with an eating disorder compared to those without a diagnosed eating disorder. Additionally, the romantic attachment styles of both sets of young women were explored. College women from a private university in the southeast were administered a demographic survey, the Adult Parental Acceptance Rejection/ Control Questionnaire, and the Intimate Partner Acceptance-Rejection! Control Questionnaire. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant relationship between having an eating disorder and the quality of both the father-daughter relationship and adult romantic attachment style, as compared to those surveyed without an eating disorder. Finally, there will be a significant effect of being diagnosed with an eating disorder on the scores of the APARQIC and IPARlCQ.

Book excerpt: This study's purpose was to examine links between women in insecurely attached families and their endorsement of eating disorder behaviors, as compared to women in securely attached families. This study also examined whether a strong attachment to God or an individuals' ethnicity served as protective factors from eating disordered behavior among individuals identified as belonging to insecurely attached families. One hundred ten women volunteered to take an online survey via the website Qualtrics. Attachment was assessed using the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised (ECR-RS) scale (Fraley, Heffernan, & Vicary, 2011). Individuals' risk for developing an eating disorder was assessed using the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26; Garner, Olmsted, Bohr, & Garfinkel, 1982). Ethnicity was assessed using a demographic survey, and participants' attachment to God was assessed by using the Attachment to God Inventory (Beck & Macdonald, 2004). It was hypothesized that female participants with an insecure parental attachment would endorse more eating disorder symptoms than females with secure parental attachment. Ethnicity and a strong attachment to God were expected to act as protective factors against eating disorder symptomology in individuals in insecurely attached families. Results showed there was no significant relationship between parental attachment and endorsement of eating disorder symptoms. However, results indicated that one's attachment to God, when analyzed in conjunction with parental attachment, is a better predictor of eating disorder symptoms than when analyzing parental attachment alone. Results also revealed that the only difference between minorities and non-minorities in terms of the study variables was their attachment to God, with minorities having a less avoidant insecure relationship with God as compared to non-minorities.
