Book excerpt: The 2001 No Child Left Behind Act's focus on raising standardized test scores for underachieving students has created a national education system where teacher time and resources are often not directed to students in the top percentiles and those identified as gifted and talented. As resources for gifted students continue to be limited, opportunities for distance learning have increased exponentially. This qualitative study explored the experiences of 7 gifted middle school students from rural schools in One Western State, their mothers, and their school principals with online courses provided through the Western Virtual School (WVS). This study also investigated the students' experiences in relation to self-regulatory learning theory and self-efficacy theory. Four areas of inquiry included: (a) the significance of the teacher, (b) rural schools' approach to gifted programs, (c) student motivation in the online environment, and (d) challenges with the online learning experience. The findings suggest that additional research be conducted in the areas of (a) student-teacher relationships in the online environment; (b) methodologies related to providing social interaction in online courses; and, (c) the use of online courses specifically for middle school students. Recommendations for educational practice include: (a) the identification of the self-regulatory learning attributes of students prior to online enrollment; (b) the need for more cohesive programs for gifted students; and, (c) increased professional development in the area of gifted education for public schools teachers and administrators.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the perceptions of parents and teachers regarding the effectiveness of gifted programs in addressing the academic and social-emotional needs of gifted students. Utilizing online surveys, perceptual data was collected from parents and teachers of gifted students in a suburban school district in southeast Pennsylvania. Interviews were conducted with parents and teachers to obtain personal views and perspectives concerning the effectiveness of gifted programs and services. The study concluded that parents favor advanced placement courses, grade-level acceleration, and small group pull-out services. Parents expressed confidence in programs intended to support their children's social-emotional development, but noted that academic programs appeared to be valued over social-emotional services. Parents recommended increasing the priority of social-emotional aspects of the gifted program. They suggested a disproportionate number of programs exist to aid students with learning disabilities versus those intended for gifted students. Parents recommended improving equity within student support service options. Parents also expressed satisfaction with pull-out style enrichment and acceleration, but proposed longer and more frequent interactions between gifted students and gifted support staff. Teachers expressed positive perceptions of the effectiveness of gifted academic programs. They reported high levels of instructional self-efficacy, but a perceived lack of school policy guiding enrichment and acceleration strategies. Teachers further indicated positive perceptions of current social-emotional programing, but a limited number of training opportunities designed to support them with gifted education. Participants recommended more gifted training opportunities and an increase in staffing to improve the overall effectiveness of gifted programs.

This study consisted of a total of 19 participants. Thirteen participants in this study were students in grades 7-8 who were currently enrolled in the gifted program and six participants were students in grades 11-12 who had previously been enrolled in the gifted program. The researcher interviewed each focus group on two separate occasions using a tape recorder to record the participants' responses. Each focus group interview lasted about one hour. This study used qualitative research. Fraenkel & Wallen (2003) stated that "Qualitative researchers have a much greater flexibility in both strategies and techniques they use and the overall research process itself. Their designs tend to emerge during the course of the research" (p.16). Data in this study were collected using an Interview Protocol created by the researcher. The Interview Protocol was comprised of background information, topics regarding the gifted program, and topics regarding students' perspectives. After transcribing the data, the researcher developed a matrix to determine the themes/patterns found in the study. Results suggested that most students entered the gifted program in the second grade by teacher recommendation and taking an IQ test. Results suggested that the perspectives of students who were presently participating in the gifted program, or who had previously participated in the gifted program, were positive in respect to the gifted program. Furthermore, results suggested that the rigorous content of the gifted program prepared 7 - 8 grade participants for the course content taught in their regular education classes and for entrance into high school. This study also suggested that students in the 11- 12 grades were better prepared for the course content taught in their regular education classes and the Advanced Placement classes offered in their school. Results from interviews indicated that some participants' self-esteem rose due to being in the gifted program. Results also indicated that the participants felt a need to overachieve as a gifted student. It is recommended that a longitudinal study be conducted with a follow-up of gifted program graduates.

Book excerpt: Gifted students spend the majority of their day in general education mixed ability classrooms. However, many students have already mastered portions if not all of the curriculum. Unintended results of enactments such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), have placed a focus on struggling students. The purpose of this study was to explore teacher and parent perceptions of an academically gifted program at two schools in a growing district at the eastern end of the greater Triangle region in North Carolina. The research focused on four questions: (a) How do parents of students identified as academically gifted perceive the way differentiated curriculum is currently being delivered; (b) How do teachers of students identified as academically gifted perceive the way differentiated curriculum is currently being delivered; (c) What outcomes would parents like to see as a result of their students participating in an elementary academically gifted program; and (d) What would teachers like to see provided in order to meet the academic needs of students identified as gifted? This study was qualitative in nature and data collection included survey and interview sessions. The results of the study indicated that enhancing the parent information practices for gifted students, implementing an early intervention program for higher performing students, designing effective professional development, and personalized learning would be beneficial for the gifted program. Without ensuring that gifted students receive a challenging curriculum the, concept of gifted underachievement will become a normalcy.

Book excerpt: Since the inception of gifted identification, marginalized youth are underrepresented as gifted. Gifted identification evolved from a singular concept of intelligence to considering a multiple-model approach of intelligence. The role of parents in the gifted identification process varies with parent nomination, often being the last used pathway for gifted identification. Parents of marginalized youth are less likely to know and to use this pathway for gifted consideration, which poses these questions about parent perceptions of gifted traits that are important to them as well as parent involvement and understanding of the gifted identification process. Using a convergent one-phase design, I collected qualitative and quantitative data from parents and teachers of third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students using an online survey. This mixed methods approach included document analysis of internal and external documents related to gifted identification. Results showed constructs for task commitment, creativity, and above average ability were equally important. Perceptions of their involvement varied with parents having limited involvement and parent nomination being the least used pathway due to foreseen and unforeseen circumstances.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore discrepancies between teacher and parent perceptions of the effectiveness of the ways schools are addressing the academic and social-emotional needs of gifted elementary students. Eighteen teachers and 21 parents of gifted elementary students from 8 schools in 3 districts in eastern Pennsylvania completed surveys that included 18 Likert scale items and 2 open-ended questions. Additionally, 5 teachers and 5 parents of gifted elementary students participated in interviews. All of the interviews consisted of 12 questions, and the interviews were conducted individually. The survey items and interview questions for the teachers and parents were aligned; this enabled the researcher to compare the responses between the groups. Teachers and parents reported that their schools are meeting the academic needs of gifted elementary students in fairly effective ways. Both groups produced responses that indicated moderate levels of agreement with the Likert scale items about acceleration and enrichment. The responses to the open-ended and interview questions about academic needs were also positive. However, the 2 groups produced contrasting responses about the students' social-emotional needs. The teachers who participated in this study responded that schools are adequately addressing the social-emotional needs of gifted elementary students. Conversely, parents stated that their children do not receive services that effectively meet their social-emotional needs. The level of agreement on the Likert scale items about social-emotional services was much lower for parents than it was for teachers. Furthermore, parents shared strongly negative opinions about social-emotional services in the open-ended and interview questions.
