Book excerpt: The accumulation of new knowledge over the last several years has provided the impetus forthis, the 7th edition of Parasitic Diseases, the most widely distributed textbook of parasitic diseases in the world. By integrating all the salient information containedin over 1000 new references with the current descriptions of each pathogen, we continuethe never-ending process of evaluating, revising, and improving our understanding of thesenoxious organisms. New features to the 7th edition include a clinical summary section, additionallife cycle diagrams, and a pronouncer's guide to parasite names. Consideration of thebiographies of those notable contributors to the field of parasitology has also been extended.Parasites Without Borders continues to make available, free of charge, the PDF version ofParasitic Diseases in both English and Spanish editions.Ultimately, it is through the education of medical students, physicians, and parasitologists, and vigilance of commitment that we can hope to improve the lives of hundreds of millionsof less fortunate individuals, helping them to live longer and more productive lives. The7th edition of Parasitic Diseases is dedicated to this premise. We invite you to join us inthis global effort

This book gives the medical student-and the practitioner-the basic information about parasitic protozoa, worms, and anthropods and the diseases they cause that will enable the reader to recognize and manage them. One is impressed with the broad scope of the subject, the diversity of the parasitic modes of life, and how much there is yet unknown about the biology of parasitism. At the same time the book provides vignettes of the often fascinating historical background of our knowledge of animal parasites and glimpses of current research that is beginning to shape the future of parasitology. William Trager, PH.D. Professor Emeritus of Parasitology The Rockefeller University New York, New York Preface This book fills the need we have felt in teaching parasitic diseases to medical students. Many of the available texts are too detailed for what is inevitably an introductory course; others that do treat this subject with appropriate brevity are now out of date; still others lack documentation of references and thus fail to guide the readers to a broader understanding of this subject. We have addressed ourselves to medical students, but they are not our sole target. Clinicians unfamiliar with the complexities of parasitic diseases need a guide to the diagnosis and management of these infections. We intend our book to serve this function as well.

Book excerpt: Worldwide, the numbers of people suffering and dying from parasitic diseases are overwhelming, with more than 100 million cases and 1 million deaths each year from malaria alone. Despite the magnitude of the problem and the importance of the parasites that cause opportunistic infections among persons with HIV/AIDS, medical schools in the United States, Canada, and other developed countries consistently reduce the amount of time spent on parasitic diseases in the curricu lum. As a result most medical students receive limited information about these diseases, and are inadequately prepared to diagnose or treat them as physicians. This problem is too large to be resolved within the time available for parasitology in the medical school curriculum; at most, students can be acquainted with the salient features of the medically important parasites. Likewise, the traditional isolation of parasitology from the rest of the curriculum (consistent with its exclu sion from most microbiology texts) is another unresolved problem. In my opinion, this is why most physicians are unable to think about the differential diagnosis of parasitic diseases in the same way that they routinely balance the probabilities of malignancy, cardiovascular, renal, and pulmonary disease vs other infectious diseases. To resolve these problems, relevant paradigms from parasitology must be used in the teaching of cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, and immu nology.

Book excerpt: Remarkable achievements in parasitic disease research, both basic and translational, have occurred over the last ten years, and we have incorporated the majority of these into the 6th edition of Parasitic Diseases. We have added over 1,000 new references to document these advances. Innovative work in the laboratory has provided the clinician/research scientist with a much clearer understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenesis. The number of recently discovered interleukins and their cellular networks has completely re-ordered our comprehension of how parasites and our defense system works to produce protection against infection/reinfection, or in some cases, how it becomes subverted by the offending pathogen to enable it to endure inside us for long periods of time. A plethora of molecular-based diagnostic tests have found their way into the routine of the parasitology diagnostic laboratory, improving the ease at which the offending pathogen can be rapidly identifed. Newer drugs, many with less harmful side-effects than the ones they replaced, have come on the market that make controlling parasite populations at the community level possible without the risk of harming the very ones we wish to help.

Book excerpt: Newly organized and featuring new editors and hundreds of new images, Peters’ Atlas of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology, Seventh Edition, brings you up to date with today’s greatest challenges in tropical medicine. Increased global travel, climate change, human conflict, short-term/large-scale human assemblies, potent therapeutic agents, drug resistance, and vaccine misinformation have contributed to a greatly changed landscape in this complex field. This practical, highly visual guide provides more than 1,300 stunning illustrations, making it an authoritative parasitology resource for accurate diagnosis of complex diseases. Contains hundreds of new images, including more than 50 completely revised life cycles and epidemiological maps. Provides current information on Zika virus, chikungunya virus, Ebola virus, SARS and MERS-CoV caused by enzootic corona virus, tuberculosis, ceftriaxone-resistant gonorrhea, malaria, and much more. Features a completely updated and significantly streamlined text, now organized not only by primary mode of disease transmission, but extended to define disease more strictly according to the route of acquisition – a logical change that reflects the principles applied to control measures for most infections. Presents the knowledge and expertise of new editors Drs. Laura Nabarro, Stephen Morris-Jones, and David A. J. Moore.

From tapeworms to the "cat poop parasite," parasites are all around us, and we're lucky if we somehow evade infection. This essential volume simplifies the complex concepts relating to parasitic infection and disease for readers who need to know what's going on around them. It details what parasitic diseases are, as well as the various types such as Protozoan, Helminth, and Ectoparasites. It discusses the causes and symptoms of each type of parasitic disease.
