It may possibly amuse others to read them. I have therefore, after much hesitation, decided to publish them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Translations From the Greek: A Bibliographical Survey A word, perhaps, is necessary in the way Of definition Of translation. In this list I have aimed to include only such works as profess to be English renderings of Greek writings. In some cases, chiefly before 1700, the English translation was made from a French, Italian, or Latin version Of the Greek original. SO far as possible, such instances have been noted. I have not included adaptations, paraphrases, and the like; nor have I attempted to record solitary translations Of excerpts from Greek literature. A book Of translations in the literal sense Of the word has been my basis for entering a title in the following list. The author would be the last one to claim infallibility for this list. One has but to attempt to gather together any considerable number Of titles on a given subject to come to a realization Of the difficulties Of the work. Here a little and there a little is a true text in any such under taking; and two translations in a bushel Of books is no rare occurrence. I have listed the facts as I have been able to gather them; but I dare not vouch that in all cases they are complete. I hope some Of the more elusive ones will be added at some future time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristotle, the Categories on Interpretation, And, Prior Analytics With an eye to the English reader, who knows, perhaps, little of logic and less in that case of Aristotle's, I have tried in translating these texts to bring out the philosopher's meaning as clearly as was in my power. How far I have succeeded in doing so, provided I interpret it rightly, the reader alone can determine. I cannot, in consequence, pretend that I literally translate the Greek, where it seemed that a literal translation would fail to achieve this main purpose. Some scholars may ossibly object that at times I paraphrase Aristotle. T can in that case only plead that a more or less intelligible paraphrase does convey something to the reader, unlike strict adherence to the letter. More over, a literal translation might often repel English readers and read like some alien jargon, as well as in all probability demanding rather copious notes, which are foreign from the scope of this series. The articles may be of substantial length, and include critical notices of major books. OSAP is now published twice yearly, in both hardback and paperback. 'The serial Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy (OSAP) is fairly regarded as the leading venue for publication in ancient philosophy. It is where one looks to find the state-of-the-art. That the serial, which presents itself more as an anthology than as a journal, has traditionally allowed space for lengthier studies, has tended only to add to its prestige; it is as if OSAP thus declares that, since it allows as much space as the merits of the subject require, it can be more entirely devoted to the best and most serious scholarship.' Book excerpt: This thoroughly researched book is a history of the development of Western horoscopic astrology from its origin among the Babylonians and its subsequent creation in its present form by the Alexandrians down to modern times. Special attention is given to background history and to the working conditions and techniques used by astrologers during the last two thousand years. Numerous footnotes provide additional information and bibliographic references. A separate bibliography lists reference sources of particular importance. Two comprehensive indices containing more than 2,800 individual entries enable the reader to locate persons, publishers, topics, and book and periodical titles that are mentioned in the history. The book also contains discussions of several questions and topics relating to astrology. James Herschel Holden is Research Director of the American Federation of Astrologers and has been especially interested in the history of astrology.
