Book excerpt: O sistema de plantio direto tornou-se, efetivamente, uma realidade no Cerrado brasileiro, sendo grande o número de produtores que já adotaram essa técnica. O não revolvimento do solo nesses sistemas, aliado à camada de resíduos que atua como dissipadora de energia, tem provocado mudanças nos fluxos de água nos sistemas palha-solo-planta-atmosfera. Como ainda não existe um modelo que avalie as modificações impostas ao balanço hídrico das culturas para as condições do Cerrado brasileiro, este trabalho objetivou quantificar, com o uso de modelo numérico, os efeitos da palhada sobre o balanço hídrico do milho e do milheto. Para isso, incorporaram-se novas funções ao modelo STICS (Simulateur mulTIsciplinaire de Culture Standard) para simular sequencialmente o crescimento e o rendimento das culturas do milho e do milheto no sistema de plantio direto no Cerrado. Foram estudados e quantificados os efeitos de vários níveis de resíduos de milho, milheto e soja na dinâmica da água no sistema de plantio direto. A modelagem desses efeitos foi feita mediante equações matemáticas simples e, posteriormente, incorporadas ao módulo de balanço hídrico do STICS. Os diferentes parâmetros e variáveis necessários para a avaliação do modelo foram coletados a partir de experimentos conduzidos no campo, onde se mediram a umidade do solo, a área foliar, a biomassa e o rendimentos de grãos. Pelos resultados observou-se que o STICS simulou satisfatoriamente a variação de água no solo e os componentes de produção das duas culturas. Uma vez calibrado, usou-se o modelo para avaliar o risco climático do milho nos sistemas convencional e plantio direto. Com base nos resultados obtidos, pode-se afirmar que o STICS é uma ferramenta eficaz para ajudar o sistema de auxílio às tomadas de decisão, pois, com os seu uso será possível indicar as áreas com maior potencial para o desenvolvimento do milho e avaliar a sensibilidade da sua produção nos sistemas de plantio direto e convencional.
