This book was released on 1970 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical analysis of a generalized parameter hydraulic fuel control concept is presented. An analog computer simulation was used to establish the feasibility of the fuel-control concept for jet engine applications. The simulation of the fuel control was first operated with a simulation of the J85-13 engine and then operated as an experimental control with an actual 585-13 engine in a test cell. Results obtained from the use of the simulated fuel control with both the simulated and actual engines are presented. The operation of the control is discussed, and its performance is compared with that of the normal 585-13 control.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous conceptual studies have shown that it is feasible to construct a low-thrust, jet engine, based on a production turbocharger at relatively low cost. A parametric evaluation was performed on a turbojet engine derived from an AiResearch 1.5 lb(m)/sec airflow turbocharger unit to determine its static performance characteristics and the maximum attainable thrust without augmentation or major component modification. The performance of various turbine housing/nozzle combinations was measured in steady state operation using a much improved instrumentation system, together with various system improvements. Parameters were measured on a common time base and plotted to depict the total performance of the unit over its usable range. Maximum thrust obtained was 97 lb(f), exceeding the initially predicted theoretical value of 67 lb(f) by 45%. Data was reduced to coded 3 digit numbers for programming and plotting using the CDC 6600 computer. The results were machine plots depicting the performance characteristics of the unaugmented engine for use in further studies including augmentation. In addition, computer performance programs for coded raw data were written for future data reduction and analysis. (Author).

Book excerpt: This text provides an introduction to gas turbine engines and jet propulsion for aerospace or mechanical engineers. The text is divided into four parts: introduction to aircraft propulsion; basic concepts and one-dimensional/gas dynamics; parametric (design point) and performance (off-design) analysis of air breathing propulsion systems; and analysis and design of major gas turbine engine components (fans, compressors, turbines, inlets, nozzles, main burners, and afterburners). Design concepts are introduced early (aircraft performance in introductory chapter) and integrated throughout. Written with extensive student input on the design of the book, the book builds upon definitions and gradually develops the thermodynamics, gas dynamics, and gas turbine engine principles.

The procedures developed can be applied with any fielded jet engine. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating the use of the Naval Aviation Logistics Analysis (NALDA) database in conjunction with existing spreadsheet software programs to develop performance goals for flight hours between repairs, infant mortality rate and proper mix of scheduled/unscheduled removals. Conditional Probabilities were calculated that will assist maintenance planners in scheduling engine removals for planned maintenance.

Book excerpt: Today's modern aircraft is based on air-breathing jet propulsion systems, which use moving fluids as substances to transform energy carried by the fluids into power. Throughout aero-vehicle evolution, improvements have been made to the engine efficiency and pollutants reduction. This study focuses on a parametric cycle analysis of a dual-spool, separate-flow turbofan engine with an Interstage Turbine Burner (ITB). The ITB considered in this paper is a relatively new concept in modern jet engine propulsion. The JTB serves as a secondary combustor and is located between the high- and the low-pressure turbine, i.e., the transition duct. The objective of this study is to use design parameters, such as flight Mach number, compressor pressure ratio, fan pressure ratio, fan bypass ratio, linear relation between high- and low-pressure turbines, and high-pressure turbine inlet temperature to obtain engine performance parameters, such as specific thrust and thrust specific fuel consumption. Results of this study can provide guidance in identifying the performance characteristics of various engine components, which can then be used to develop, analyze, integrate, and optimize the system performance of turbofan engines with an ITB. Book excerpt: Compressor performance and turbine performance are presented in the form of performance maps at selected values of Reynolds number index; the effects of Reynolds number on performance are summarized. The effects of variable stator angle and high inlet-air temperatures on compressor performance are also shown. Over-all engine performance (net thrust and specific fuel consumption) is presented for a flight Mach number of 0.9 at rated engine conditions over a range of altitudes to illustrate performance losses resulting from decreased Reynolds number index.

Book excerpt: November, 2008 Anna Schwarz, Johannes Janicka In the last thirty years noise emission has developed into a topic of increasing importance to society and economy. In ?elds such as air, road and rail traf?c, the control of noise emissions and development of associated noise-reduction techno- gies is a central requirement for social acceptance and economical competitiveness. The noise emission of combustion systems is a major part of the task of noise - duction. The following aspects motivate research: • Modern combustion chambers in technical combustion systems with low pol- tion exhausts are 5 - 8 dB louder compared to their predecessors. In the ope- tional state the noise pressure levels achieved can even be 10-15 dB louder. • High capacity torches in the chemical industry are usually placed at ground level because of the reasons of noise emissions instead of being placed at a height suitable for safety and security. • For airplanes the combustion emissions become a more and more important topic. The combustion instability and noise issues are one major obstacle for the introduction of green technologies as lean fuel combustion and premixed burners in aero-engines. The direct and indirect contribution of combustion noise to the overall core noise is still under discussion. However, it is clear that the core noise besides the fan tone will become an important noise source in future aero-engine designs. To further reduce the jet noise, geared ultra high bypass ratio fans are driven by only a few highly loaded turbine stages.

Book excerpt: This report presents the performance of a steady-state, dual-spool, separate-exhaust turbofan engine, with an interstage turbine burner (ITB) serving as a secondary combustor. The ITB, which is located in the transition duct between the high- and the low-pressure turbines, is a relatively new concept for increasing specific thrust and lowering pollutant emissions in modern jet-engine propulsion. A detailed off-design performance analysis of ITB engines is written in Microsoft(Registered Trademark) Excel (Redmond, Washington) macrocode with Visual Basic Application to calculate engine performances over the entire operating envelope. Several design-point engine cases are pre-selected using a parametric cycle-analysis code developed previously in Microsoft(Registered Trademark) Excel, for off-design analysis. The off-design code calculates engine performances (i.e. thrust and thrust-specific-fuel-consumption) at various flight conditions and throttle settings.Liew, K. H. and Urip, E. and Yang, S.
