The physical system to be simulated is partitioned into n disjoint sub-systems, each of which is represented by an object. The MTW-algorithm identifies a time window for each object, such that events within different windows can be processed concurrently. The MTW-algorithm has been implemented on a shared memory multiprocessor, a Sequent Balance 8000 with 10 processors. Some performance data for a 4 x 4 torus network, is also reported."

Book excerpt: A conservative synchronization protocol is described for the parallel simulation of queueing networks having C job priority classes, where a job's class is fixed. This problem has long vexed designers of conservative synchronization protocols because of its seemingly poor ability to compute lookahead: the time of the next departure. For, a job in service having low priority can be preempted at any time by an arrival having higher priority and an arbitrarily small service time. The solution is to skew the event generation activity so that the events for higher priority jobs are generated farther ahead in simulated time than lower priority jobs. Thus, when a lower priority job enters service for the first time, all the higher priority jobs that may preempt it are already known and the job's departure time can be exactly predicted. Finally, the protocol was analyzed and it was demonstrated that good performance can be expected on the simulation of large queueing networks. Nicol, David M. Unspecified Center NAS1-18605...

Intuition suggests that simulations of these systems may be amenable to parallel execution. The parallel execution of a discrete-event simulation requires careful synchronization of processes in order to ensure the execution's correctness; this synchronization can degrade performance. Largely negative results were recently reported in a study which used a well-known synchronization method on queueing network simulations. Discussed here is a synchronization method (appointments), which has proven itself to be effective on simulations of FCFS queueing networks. The key concept behind appointments is the provision of lookahead. Lookahead is a prediction on a processor's future behavior, based on an analysis of the processor's simulation state. It is shown how lookahead can be computed for FCFS queueing network simulations, give performance data that demonstrates the method's effectiveness under moderate to heavy loads, and discuss performance tradeoffs between the quality of lookahead, and the cost of computing lookahead. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on classical queueing theory mainly dealing with single node queueing systems, networks of queues, or stochastic networks has been a field of intensive research over the last three decades. Whereas the first breakthrough in queueing network theory was initiated by problems and work in operations research, the second breakthrough, as well as subsequent major work in the area, was closely related to computer science, particularly to performance analysis of complex systems in computer and communication science. The text reports on recent research and development in the area. It is centered around explicit expressions for the steady behavior of discrete time queueing networks and gives a moderately positive answer to the question of whether there can be a product form calculus in discrete time. Originating from a course given by the author at Hamburg University, this book is ideally suited as a text for courses on discrete time stochastic networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook aims to highlight fundamental, methodological and computational aspects of networks of queues to provide insights and to unify results that can be applied in a more general manner. The handbook is organized into five parts: Part 1 considers exact analytical results such as of product form type. Topics include characterization of product forms by physical balance concepts and simple traffic flow equations, classes of service and queue disciplines that allow a product form, a unified description of product forms for discrete time queueing networks, insights for insensitivity, and aggregation and decomposition results that allow sub networks to be aggregated into single nodes to reduce computational burden. Part 2 looks at monotonicity and comparison results such as for computational simplification by either of two approaches: stochastic monotonicity and ordering results based on the ordering of the process generators, and comparison results and explicit error bounds based on an underlying Markov reward structure leading to ordering of expectations of performance measures. Part 3 presents diffusion and fluid results. It specifically looks at the fluid regime and the diffusion regime. Both of these are illustrated through fluid limits for the analysis of system stability, diffusion approximations for multi-server systems, and a system fed by Gaussian traffic. Part 4 illustrates computational and approximate results through the classical MVA (mean value analysis) and QNA (queueing network analyzer) for computing mean and variance of performance measures such as queue lengths and sojourn times; numerical approximation of response time distributions; and approximate decomposition results for large open queueing networks. spanPart 5 enlightens selected applications as spanloss networks originating from circuit switched telecommunications applications, capacity sharing originating from packet switching in data networks, and a hospital application that is of growing present day interest. spanThe book shows that spanthe intertwined progress of theory and practicespan will remain to be most intriguing and will continue to be the basis of further developments in queueing networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We simulate several variants of a class of queueing networks corresponding to different system parameter values or operating policies - simultaneously. One clock mechanism is used to drive all the variants. This clock synchronizes the system trajectories such that the same event takes place at the same time at all systems. This synchronization is the basis of the massively parallel algorithms we develop. Implementation of the algorithms on the massively parallel Connection Machine and the implications of the approach for performance optimization is discussed.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop on parallel database systems organized by the PRISMA (Parallel Inference and Storage Machine) project. The invited contributions by internationally recognized experts give a thorough survey of several aspects of parallel database systems. The second part of the volume gives an in-depth overview of the PRISMA system. This system is based on a parallel machine, where the individual processors each have their own local memory and communicate with each other over a packet-switched network. On this machine a parallel object-oriented programming language, POOL-X, has been implemented, which provides dedicated support for database systems as well as general facilities for parallel programming. The POOL-X system then serves as a platform for a complete relational main-memory database management system, which uses the parallelism of the machine to speed up significantly the execution of database queries. The presentation of the PRISMA system, together with the invited papers, gives a broad overview of the state of the art in parallel database systems.
