Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton Paradise Lost: Books I and II Any excuse which may be needed for the existence of this new edition of the first two books of Paradise Lost will be found, not in the Notes so much as in the Introduction and Conclusion. The present volume aims to present, in form at once compact and continuous, and mainly in Milton's own words, the story of Paradise Lost, and especially the story of Satan. It is expected that the quoted passages will not only set forth the narrative with some clearness, but will afford something more than a glimpse of the poet at his best. The editor recommends that the Introduction, the first two Books, and the Conclusion, be first read from beginning to end, with a view to getting the perspective of the story; after which the student may take up more prof itably a detailed study of Books I. And II. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Paradise Lost: Books I and II With Introduction, Notes, and Diagrams IN this edition of the first two books of Paradise Lost, I have tried to mark the literary aspects of the poem. Everything else has been of minor consideration. I have neglected a number of interesting things about Milton's life, because I believe that too much biography detracts from. Interest in the poem; I have neglected many inter esting questions concerning Milton's language, because these seem often, not only to detract from interest in the poem, but almost to destroy it. I have tried to explain what was necessary, and no more, and to call attention to what might pass unnoticed, so that a student could read the poem with understanding and with appreciation of its special characteristics. The poem is edited not only for cursory reading, but for special study. The notes at the bottom of the page are intended for use when the book is prescribed for reading. Where the book is prescribed for study, the student will find some additional notes on pp. 78 - 102. Even these addi tional notes, however, do not deal largely with explanation of allusion or linguistic comment: their purpose is to make the student more intimately familiar with the poem, and so more appreciative of its character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Paradise Lost: Books I and II; School Use The section on Milton's Verse has been added to the Introduction, with the hope that it may help the student in reading the poem aloud. It would be well if considerable portions of the verse might be read in class, with a view to bringing out its musical qualities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Paradise Lost: Book I and II The purpose of this edition is to promote the enjoyment of Milton's poetry through study of a selection which, by its excellence of every sort, will reward prolonged attention. Through study, not through mere reading; for the editor does not share the opinion of those who hold that the study of the best literature is fatal to enjoyment. 'All men, ' says Aristotle - and we shall hardly find a more competent judge - 'all men by nature desire to know.' If the appetite for knowledge is inborn in every human being, study, which is the process of acquiring knowledge, can only be distasteful when it has artificially been rendered so. There are those who concede this in general, who yet make an exception of literature; but it is difficult to see why the highest form of expression of which the human soul is capable should less repay study by enjoyment than the grass of the field or the rocks of the mine. On this point I am glad to find myself in substantial accord with that veteran and universally respected teacher of English, Professor March, of Lafayette College. He believes, as I also do, in the more rapid reading of certain books, especially during the elementary stages of an English course, according to a method that he suggests in The Independent for August 4, 1892. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Paradise Lost: Books I. And II., Edited With Introduction and Notes IN Milton's life Paradise Lost may be regarded as the great central point, to which everything else is subordi nate. All through his youth and his prime of manhood he was consciously or unconsciously preparing himself to write a great epic poem. Very slowly his great purpose assumed definite shape in his mind. The poems in which he first showed his poetic genius were lyric and dra matic, but early in life he had conceived the idea of rivalling the fame of Homer and Virgil, and becoming the epic representative of his native land and of modern Christendom. At first he meditated a national epic, based upon the legends of prehistoric England. In his youth his mind was attracted by the picturesque pageantry of chivalry and romance. I betook me, he writes in the Apology for Smectymnus among those lofty fables and romances which recount in solemn cantos the deeds of knighthood. The poet's wanderings in the fields of old romance have left their traces distinctly in some of the most gorgeous passages of his epic poetry. At one time they seemed likely to determine his ultimate choice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Paradise Lost remains as challenging and relevant today as it was in the turbulent intellectual and political environment in which it was written. This edition aims to bring the poem as fully alive to a modern reader as it would have been to Milton's contemporaries. It provides a newly edited text of the 1674 edition of the poem-the last of Milton's lifetime-with carefully modernized spelling and punctuation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paradise Lost, Vol. 1 I was led to this course, not by any wish to ignore the labours of my predecessors, but by the example of the editor of the Clarendon Press Edition, who frequently attributes to Keightley, to whom he owes so much, remarks which I dis covered in the writings of critics who wrote a hundred and fifty years ago.
