Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Tanzania by : Michael F. Lofchie
Download or read book The Political Economy of Tanzania written by Michael F. Lofchie and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since gaining independence, the United Republic of Tanzania has enjoyed relative stability. More recently, the nation transitioned peacefully from "single-party democracy" and socialism to a multiparty political system with a market-based economy. But Tanzania's development strategies—based on the leading economic ideas at the time of independence—also opened the door for unscrupulous dealmaking among political elites and led to economic decline in the 1960s and 1970s that continues to be felt today. Indeed, the shift to a market-oriented economy was motivated in part by the fiscal interests of government profiteers. The Political Economy of Tanzania focuses on the nation's economic development from 1961 to the present, considering the global and domestic factors that have shaped Tanzania's economic policies over time. Michael F. Lofchie presents a compelling analysis of the successes and failures of a country whose postcolonial history has been deeply influenced by high-ranking members of the political elite who have used their power to advance their own economic interests. The Political Economy of Tanzania offers crucial lessons for scholars and policy makers with a stake in Africa's future.
Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Aid and Accountability by : Helen Tilley
Download or read book The Political Economy of Aid and Accountability written by Helen Tilley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The provision of aid is increasingly under scrutiny with increasing demands for results. This raises the question: what are our expectations from aid and are they realistic? Too often accountability is argued for without questioning if what is understood by the term is relevant or applicable. The Political Economy of Aid and Accountability: The Rise and Fall of Budget Support in Tanzania explores the real meaning of accountability and argues for a new approach to aid more relevant to recipient countries. Offering fresh, insightful ideas Helen Tilley presents a contemporary theory of accountability through a case study of the delivery of general budget support in Tanzania. By considering the wider system of often contradictory political and social relations that influence and in turn constrain donor-government relations she questions the traditional understanding of accountability and deconstructs its epistemological assumptions. Engaging in an interdisciplinary discussion drawing upon economics, sociology, political science, anthropology, psychology and philosophy the book constructs a modern and nuanced understanding of accountability and foreign aid.
Book Synopsis Essays on the Political Economy of Rural Africa by : Robert H. Bates
Download or read book Essays on the Political Economy of Rural Africa written by Robert H. Bates and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1987-04-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume represent a dialogue between theory and data. The theory is drawn from a branch of contemporary political economy which can also be labeled the collective-choice school. The data are drawn from Africa. The book extends the methods of reasoning developed in collective choice from their original base-the advanced industrial democracies-to new territory; the literature on rural Africa. Such as extension challenges the power of this form of political economy. It also enriches it, for the central questions which motivate the contemporary study of political economy are often addressed with unique clarity in the scholarship on rural Africa.
Book Synopsis Tanzanian Development by : Andrew Coulson
Download or read book Tanzanian Development written by Andrew Coulson and published by Eastern Africa. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date, comparative, examination of the developing economy of Tanzania and its grass roots progress out of poverty, with pointers to its wider implications for policymakers, NGOS and practitioners. Over the past thirty years, in common with a number of other Sub-Saharan African countries, Tanzania has experienced a period of painful adjustment followed by relatively rapid and stable economic growth. However the extent of progress on poverty reduction and the sustainability of the development process are both open to question. In this book, prominent international observers provide a range of different perspectives on the process of development over time and the issues facing a rapidly growing African economy: political economy; agriculture and rural livelihoods; industrial development; urbanisation; aid and trade; tourism; and the use of natural resources. Comparisons are drawn with other African economies as well as other developing countries, such as Vietnam. An invaluable deep review of Tanzania's economy and development, the book also looks at the wider implications of the research for the futureon the continent and beyond. David Potts is Honorary Visiting Researcher at the University of Bradford and was Head of the Bradford Centre for International Development 2015-16. He worked for six years as an economist in Tanzania's Ministry of Agriculture in the 1980s, has had many subsequent short-term assignments in the country and is co-editor of Development Planning and Poverty Reduction (2003).
Book Synopsis Turbulence and Order in Economic Development by : Hazel Gray
Download or read book Turbulence and Order in Economic Development written by Hazel Gray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terms of debate on the role of institutions in economic development are changing. Stable market institutions, in particular, secure private property rights and democratically accountable governments that uphold the rule of law, are widely seen to be a pre-requisite for economic transformation in low income countries, yet over the last thirty years, economic growth and structural transformation has surged forward in a range of countries where market and state institutions have differed these ideals, as well as from each other. Turbulence and Order in Economic Development studies the role of the state in two such countries, examining the interplay between market liberalization, institutions, and the distribution of power in Tanzania and Vietnam. Tanzania and Vietnam were two of the poorest countries in the world in the early 1980s but over the last thirty years, both have experienced significant changes in the pace and character of economic development. While both countries experienced faster rates of GDP growth, their paths of economic transformation were very different as Vietnam experienced rapid poverty reduction associated with the expansion of manufacturing while Tanzania's path of industrialization was characterized by the rise of mining and a much slower pace of poverty reduction. Employing a political settlements approach, this book considers the comparative role of the state in driving economic transformation. In both countries, the experiences of socialism continued to shape the role of the state in the economy even after extensive market liberalization, however, the distribution of political and economic power was very different. This had important consequences for the overlapping role of the state in generating political order and in driving economic transformation. Turbulence and Order in Economic Development studies the formal and informal ways that the state influenced economic transformation through its role in public financial management, land and industrial policy.

Book Synopsis African Successes, Volume I by : Sebastian Edwards
Download or read book African Successes, Volume I written by Sebastian Edwards and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of African economic development frequently focus on the daunting challenges the continent faces. From recurrent crises to ethnic conflicts and long-standing corruption, a raft of deep-rooted problems has led many to regard the continent as facing many hurdles to raise living standards. Yet Africa has made considerable progress in the past decade, with a GDP growth rate exceeding five percent in some regions. The African Successes series looks at recent improvements in living standards and other measures of development in many African countries with an eye toward identifying what shaped them and the extent to which lessons learned are transferable and can guide policy in other nations and at the international level. The first volume in the series, African Successes: Governments and Institutions considers the role governments and institutions have played in recent developments and identifies the factors that enable economists to predict the way institutions will function.
Book Synopsis Overcoming Constraints on Tanzanian Growth by : S. M. Wangwe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published for the prestigious Economic and Social Research Foundation, this review comes at a significant time in Tanzania's history. The death of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere (founding father of Tanzania and dominant political figure for four decades) marks the end of an era, just as the new century begins; the Third Phase Government completes its first term (1995-2000), and President Mkapa has been re-elected for his final term. An interpretative review of the existing literature and research on the Tanzanian economy, this book places the economic performance of President Benjamin Mkapa's Third Phase Government in the context sectors of the economy social sector provision and of past crises and current constraints. Examining Tanzania's Aid relationships, it gives a thorough and well informed overview of what has been achieved. It also makes recommendations for future policy: logical continuation of the thrust of current policies for the next Mkapa government.

Book Synopsis Lethal Aid by : Severine Mushambampale Rugumamu
Download or read book Lethal Aid written by Severine Mushambampale Rugumamu and published by Africa World Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite massive infusions of financial and technical assistance from the northern hemisphere, Africa is worse off today - economically, societally, and environmentally - than it was 30 years ago. But were economic development, poverty alleviation, and democracy ever actually the objectives of either donor or recipient states in the first place? To what extent was the limitless potential of the self-reliance strategy foreclosed by the corrupting power of foreign aid? As much as military power, propaganda, or diplomacy, "aid" is - realistically and essentially - one of the economic instruments of statecraft and, as such, has historically been used as a policy tool for various attempts at influence. While policies and strategies on both sides of the aid process may give primacy of place to development, actual practice almost invariably reveals the opposite, as donor and recipient alike employ aid resources to pursue their respective national, class, or even regime interests. Through the Tanzanian experience of "Big Brother's" helping hand, the author examines the true role of foreign aid in the development process and exposes certain widely-held myths about that role.

Book Synopsis Accumulation in an African Periphery by : Issa G. Shivji
Download or read book Accumulation in an African Periphery written by Issa G. Shivji and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008-12-31 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Washington consensus" which ushered in neo-liberal policies in Africa is over. It was buried at the G20 meeting in London in early April, 2009. The world capitalist system is in shambles. The champions of capitalism in the global North are rewriting the rules of the game to save it. The crisis creates an opening for the global South, in particular Africa, to refuse to play the capitalist-imperialist game, whatever the rules. It is time to rethink and revisit the development direction and strategies on the continent. This is the central message of this intensely argued book. Issa Shivji demonstrates the need to go back to the basics of radical political economy and ask fundamental questions: who produces the society's surplus product, who appropriates and accumulates it and how is this done. What is the character of accumulation and what is the social agency of change? The book provides an alternative theoretical framework to help African researchers and intellectuals to understand their societies better and contribute towards changing them in the interest of the working people.
Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of African Political Economy by : Samuel Ojo Oloruntoba

This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 1099 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook constitutes a specialist single compendium that analyses African political economy in its theoretical, historical and policy dimensions. It emphasizes the uniqueness of African political economy within a global capitalist system that is ever changing and complex. Chapters in the book discuss how domestic and international political economic forces have shaped and continue to shape development outcomes on the continent. Contributors also provoke new thinking on theories and policies to better position the continent’s economy to be a critical global force. The uniqueness of the handbook lies in linking theory and praxis with the past, future, and various dimensions of the political economy of Africa.
